FIONA by Tracy Nneka Osokolo

Tracy Nneka Osokolo is the author of “Red Pepper and English Tea” and a resident writer at the London 2012 Olympics Festival at the Southbank Centre. Tracy will be writing a regular column for LagosMums!

I watched her skip around the dining table as I tried to work. I gave up concentrating on my laptop and watched the way she made patterns in the air with her yellow dress. Her slim brown legs moved in circles and looked just like her father’s when he ever tried to dance. With a small smile at the corner of my lips, I wondered how biology worked in such a weird way. I stopped smiling when I remembered the journey I travelled to have her in my life.

In a few more months, I would become the ‘control freak’ mum in Festac who would be all crazed up while searching for the most perfect Crèche in the small town.  The first time I carried her, she stayed for only three weeks. My first test said she was negative and that she wasn’t really there. But each time I googled a symptom that she gave me, I could tell she was there.  I knew she was there; and my second test confirmed it. They called children like her “Abiku” in Lagos. I am yet to tell the other married women on my street that she came one more time before she returned, again. They will want to hear that because they call themselves my ‘friends’. I smile with them when they say that because I know that in a few years Fiona will need healthy playmates. I would rather she has her sleep-overs in a place that is within close proximity to our home, and with people whom I have studied for years, so that I would already understand if their parenting style was good enough for my little Fifi.

The first time Fiona came, I wasn’t sure that I wanted her. Her daddy kissed my stomach every morning and spoke to her at night when I returned from work. He had taken up extra responsibilities at his job, as he made plans for extra income to feed and clothe her. He told her on one of those nights that he couldn’t afford to birth her in the USA but that he’d take her to school there. I felt a pang in my lower belly as her reply.

“Mummy, let us go to Oxfam” she giggled in the setting sun’s rays, coming from our window.

She was poking her finger on my ipad’s screen. I usually would get angry when she does that, but I allowed her to distract me from work … this one time. I didn’t want to ever miss her again. I missed her in those months when I waited for her to come again. While I waited for the second time, my gynaecologist said I was imagining her pregnancy and that I should stop tricking my body into believing that it was carrying a baby!

How So? I knew she was there … though I didn’t want her, I knew she was there. She made me dizzy all the time. I slept so much at the office. My lower back and lower abdomen was constantly sore and my breasts were swelling. I craved certain types of meals. Then, I ate and drank water too frequently. I needed to sit within proximity to a toilet. Whenever I would complain about what was happening to me and how Fiona would take away my dress size 8 with her, her father would smile and say  “All for the better, dear”.

Then I would fire back “So, you sef you want me to be fat too” and I would have that green-eyed monster look in my eyes while he would gently watch me, knowing that it wasn’t me talking but the hormones. By week 3 of her second visit, I didn’t know what to do about Fiona inside me. I was a new wife and I wanted to enjoy my life alone with hubby for as long as society would permit me.

I started to read.

I catalogued pictures of what she looked like for every week that she was inside me, and one Friday evening as I drove from the office preparing to face mile 2’s traffic, she pinched me and she fell. Holding the steering, I bent vertically into a semi-circle and saw her lying in between my pants … red, underneath my skirt. My eyes watered. She was gone again.

Grandmothers blame Rude and Lazy Children on Liberal parenting

$

Grandmothers are blaming “liberal parenting” as the reason for the rude, lazy children being raised today.

  • Survey shows children ignore common courtesies
  • Decline of family meal causes bad table manners
  • Scrapping strict school rules also blamed
  •

A decline in traditions like sitting down to eat dinner together and using common courtesies such as ‘excuse me’ stems from lazy parenting, according to a survey of grandmothers. They also blame Liberal parenting which in their view is obsessed with children expressing themselves and this is killing-off good manners.

They also blamed bad behaviour at school on the axing of old rules which saw children sit at desks all day and stand respectfully when a teacher entered the room. Now are the days of free play, montessorie, circle time….

The grandmothers believe that good manners can only be learned by example, with many 21st century parents failing to provide the same disciplinary boundaries they had.

Results of the study of 100 grandparents by website Grannynet, revealed just 54 per cent of children now sit down to eat dinner with their families at least once a day.

This was a down from 92 per cent of grandmothers when they were growing up and 87 per cent when they were raising their children.

Bad habits at dinnertime proved a particular bugbear for many of those surveyed.

Today just 49 per cent of children ask if they can leave the table at the end of a meal, compared to 89 per cent of grandparents when they were growing up and 80 per cent of parents during their childhood.

However just 37 per cent of children today say ‘excuse me’, before interrupting someone, a disappointment to the 82 per cent of grandmothers polled who did so during their childhood.

Meanwhile, the number of children writing thank-you letters has dropped dramatically, from 86 per forced to do so when grandparents were young to just 35 per cent today.

Grannynet founder Verity Gill said: ‘This survey has revealed some interesting reactions.

‘What we’ve found is that there has been a real shift in what polite manners mean to children in modern times today compared with what was expected of their mothers and grandmothers.

Maybe a question of ‘modern’ polite nowadays not being the same as polite from “the old days”.’

What do you think? Are our children today ruder? lazier? impolite? and are the “liberal parents” maybe to blame?

Serious Accidental Injuries in the Under Five

    $
    0
    0

Minor injuries are common in childhood – they are a normal part of children growing up, testing out new abilities and exploring the world. However, every hour, four children under the age of five are admitted to hospital with more serious accidental injuries.  In 2010, 83 under-fives died following accidents.

    The real safety risks

Child accident prevention is not about wrapping children up in cotton wool; it’s about protecting them from serious accidents – those which can hospitalise, disable or even kill. Some common accidents can have a lifelong impacton the child and their family, with falls from heights, burns and scalds, and road accidents all having the potential to cause disability and disfigurement.

    Inequalities

There is a strong link between accidental injury and inequality: children from the most disadvantaged families are three timesmore likely to be admitted to hospital withserious accidental injuries and 13 times more likely to die in an accident.

    Stages of development

Parents are often taken by surprise when their baby or toddler learns a new skill, such as grabbing, rolling over or crawling.Practitioners who work with parentsof young children can help to raise awareness of the biggest injury risks atdifferent stages of a child’s developmentand provide clear, practical and accuratesafety advice at each step.

Table 1: Key safety messages for parents at child development checks

    1 – 6 weeks

    6 weeks – 6 months

    6 months – 1 year

    1 – 3 years

    Burns and Scalds

Hot drinks can scald in seconds – put yours down before picking up your baby

Keep hot drinks, kettles and pans well away from curious hands

Put hair straighteners in a safe place to cool

Put cold water in the bath first

    Choking

Babies can choke if they’re propped up to feed – always hold them while feeding

Cut food into small pieces and keep small pieces like coins out of reach

    Drowning

Use just 5cm of water at bathtime and never leave your baby alone in the bath

Supervise children near garden ponds and paddling pools

    Falls

Take extra care when carrying your baby on stairs

Your baby could roll or wriggle off a raised surface – change nappies on the floor

Protect your child from falls by:

    • Using safety gates on stairs.
    • Strapping them into their highchair every time
    • Using window locks/catches

    House fires

Test your smoke alarms regularly. Plan and practice a fire escape route.

    Poisoning

Make sure tablets are kept out of reach.

    Keep cleaning products locked away

    Road accidents

Use a car seat on every journey

Rear-facing child seats are safest -use one for as long as possible

Use a car seat that’s appropriate for your child’s weight, age and height.

Encourage hand-holding or use walking reins/wrist straps when walking near traffic.

    Suffocation and strangulation

Babies can suffocate on duvets and pillows – save these until they’re over 1 year old

Tie up blind cords so they can’t cause strangulation

Keep nappy sacks in a safe place out of your baby’s reach

Diary Adventures of LagosMums | Comfort in the Salon Not!

    $

    0

    Comfort in the Salon!

I am finally at the salon putting braids in my hair! between having to answer questions from my toddlers about the true length of my hair, or them asking about my integrity aka why I am pretending that the weave-on is my hair when it is not, or them threatening to embarrass me by saying “I will tell my teacher that you put another hair on your head” I had resorted to simply managing with my normal (relaxed) hair.

The slight problem has been the heat! Why is it soo hot in Lagos? Before I go too far from the front door, I have sweat-ed buckets and my hair is limp! I don’t know if it’s the heat or people forgot to warn me that as you get older, your hair starts to be tougher to relax? or what? I suddenly can’t go four or six weeks between relaxers anymore. Anyway ever since the onslaught of hair challenge by my toddlers I have been rocking my regular hair, heat and all.

But you know I mean really it is December, the number of outdoor fairs to attend is increasing, the invites to the Christmas parties are pouring in and I just don’t feel fabulous enough with just my limp short ponytail any longer. After a lot of rationalizing, trying to put in a weave again, to which my darling toddlers were ready to remind me about my “fake and lying” hair, I have decided braids might be the way to go. With braids it is not considered fake, I am not really pretending to have hair that is not mine nor am I claiming length that isn’t mine? Right? Braids is just a “style” so I have decided to rock my braids for the December period!

I finally make it to the salon, I had watched and figured out the relatively “slow” day at the salon so I can be sure of at least two people dedicated to my hair at a time for a quick pick ‘n’ drop do. It is much cheaper going to the salon than bringing them home these days as they charge astronomically more for home service than going to the salon (I don’t recall it working this way when I was much younger in the days of my amigo and I would braid at a fraction the cost of going to the salon). Anyway I finally make it into the chair, balance with my book, looking forward to some quiet time with not much to think about.

Why then is the braider going to spoil my relaxation? I hear her talking to her colleague expressing her relief that a certain colleague is out on maternity leave because that particular pregnant colleague does not like to use gloves when she is relaxing her clients hair. She toot toots a bit more, shakes her head disapprovingly and then goes on to say ever since she learnt that relaxers cause cancer she no longer relaxes anyone’s hair without wearing gloves! So she is clearly worried about her hands touching the relaxer she is applying to her clients head….errr so what about the clients and the million of women across the globe putting relaxers in their hair? Are we actually exposing ourselves to such risks?

There (out the window) went any relaxation while braiding my hair because of course I started to ponder whether what she was saying had any merit? I was actually too horrified at the thought she might be right to engage her and ask her where she heard this? Was it a reputable source? What if this is something to really worry about? Then what?

My toddlers won’t let me “fix weave-on” and now I might not be able to relax my hair again?! Ha this falls right into the “greener living” project o! first was to get rid of microwave, do I also need to get rid of hair relaxers too?

A LagosMums needs the help of other Mums as she tries to put together a time-table for her family, herself, husband and little child. She is stuck and needs some help to complete her healthy timetable for the family…Read more from menutastic

    By Menutastic

I decided to prepare a meal timetable for my family comprising hubby, 2 year old and myself. I thought it was a brilliant idea and it should be relatively easy, afterall, I knew what I wanted  – a well balanced meal timetable that was delicious and nutritious comprising of both African and non-African dishes.

But Alas, I started and I realised that it was actually a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. I wanted to create a menu timetable for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 14 days. Breakfast wasn’t so bad but having to think of different meals for lunch and dinner was another story. (I didn’t want rice to feature more than once a week – trying to cut down).

Apart from drawing a blank after day 3, I felt that the choices I have in Lagos are limited. I wanted variety at affordable prices and easy to prepare meals as I have no cook, only a househelp and I work 8am – 6pm, Monday to Friday.

So I ask myself, what do people eat at home? I would love ideas. Is anyone willing to share their meal timetable?

Below is as far as I was able to get and I’m still not 100% convinced. I intended to get to at least Day 14.

    Sample Meal Timetable
    Day Lunch (12 – 1.30pm) Dinner (4.30 – 6.30pm)
1 Rice and Stew Chicken and chips
2 Noodles with mixed vegetables and sausage Amala + Ewedu/Ila
3 Fried plantain + stew sweet potato and sauce
4 Pasta and sauce Pounded yam + stew/Green salad with fish or chicken
5 Sandwich (with sardines/ham/makarel and boiled egg) CousCous and sauce
    6 Asaro/Rice and stew

    Looking forward to your  responses!

RE: APPEAL FUND ON BEHALF OF EMMANUELLA EZENAGU

In January 2010, Chetachi Ezenagu, a young married mother, left her beautiful daughter Emmanuella in the care of her nanny. She had just turned one, before that she had been a happy healthy little baby.

At lunch time, Chetachi came home to find her baby unconscious in her crib. She immediately rushed her to a hospital where she was pronounced dead half an hour later. The cause of death was drowning. “…..The baby had drowned in the bath tub through the nanny’s carelessness and the nanny had been unable to revive her

After experiencing first hand the effects of losing a child so young and the trauma felt by the whole family, Chetachi wanted desperately to help other children and their families avoid similar situations.

Since then, Chetachi’s family and friends have been raising money through fundraising events to help charitable institutions working with children. Some of these activities have supported organisations like The Nigerian Red Cross and Motherless & Abandoned babies home and we have generally promoted the importance of First Aid training for the health and wellbeing of our young ones.

This year, we intend to support the special Children of the Bethseda Child Agency by supporting this Non profit organization with funds in order for them to continue their noble work of providing Free and Quality education to orphaned and vulnerable children.  Any and all donations will be accepted with gratitude and the uplifting knowledge that you have done your part to put a smile on their faces this Christmas period. We also welcome donations in kind: any goods or services which could be useful to our cause as Chetachi welcomes and enjoys support from a broad range of individuals and groups within a large number of different communities and corporations.

Our Fundraisers will be happy to contact you at your convenience in order discuss a sponsorship/partnership or to accept your kind gifts.

We thank you for your consideration and look forward to your future participation and interest.

It’s time for Your Annual Check – Up

It’s time for Your Annual Check – Up Contributed by Mrs Nimi Akinkugbe

Are you one of those people that postpone scheduling your annual dental check-up? The result of not having a regular check up means that you may end up having a painful emergency that will cost a lot more than it would have done if only you’d gone for a routine check and filled a growing cavity before it required a root canal. Regular checkups are as important for your physical well being as they are for your financial wellbeing.

What changed for you in 2012? Did you start a new job or leave a job? Did you get married this year? Did you start a family? Did you retire? Did you get divorced? Did you lose a loved one? Whether there have been notable changes in your personal or professional life, or even if it has been relatively uneventful, your personal finances need regular attention. I recommend a complete review or analysis at least once a year to get a clear view of your current financial situation.

As the year draws to a close, it is a good time to look back on how you’ve done financially over the past year; take stock, review your mistakes and successes and put a plan in place to do better in 2013.

Below are ten points to consider as you analyse your current financial position.

    Very Good Adequate Weak

Use the green, yellow and red dots to evaluate where you are. A green dot indicates that you have made good progress. A yellow dot suggests that whilst you may have made some progress in some areas, you are still limping along in others and can do better. A red dot means you face real challenges with your finances and you need to get back on track in 2013.

    1. Review Your Goals

You probably set some goals early in the year, either as part of a New Year Resolution or just to try to get some order into certain aspects of your life. What were your goals for 2012? As you look back on the year, you will probably find that you reached or exceeded some of your goals. You will also find that you fell short on others.

Even if you failed to reach any of your goals, assess your situation to ensure that this does not happen in 2013. By reviewing your goals, and considering your successes and failures you can have a huge impact on your financial life.

Major life changes such as getting married, having children, retiring, buying a house, getting a significant promotion or a bonus or even winning the lottery, will have an impact and you may need to make some adjustments to your savings, spending, or investments to keep your plans on track.

    2. Financial Plan

Do you have a financial plan? It is important to have a written personal financial plan in place with your short and long term goals clearly stated and with assigned time frames. A personal financial plan covers several areas including credit, savings and investments, insurance and estate planning. Ideally you should be aiming for a balanced score card where all areas are receiving adequate attention.

    3. Where are your documents?

All your difficult to replace legal and financial documents should be stored in a safe and fireproof location. Documents you should store include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, titles of ownership for your home, cars, etc. Birth, marriage and death certificates passports, lists of personal possessions should all be kept securely. Do you know where your important documents are?

    4. Emergency Fund

One of the first steps to financial security is to build an emergency fund. How much money do you have in the bank? How much did you save this year? Ideally you should have at least three to six months of your monthly income saved in cash or in the money market. Cash from your thirteenth month salary or an end of year bonus could kick-start an emergency fund that you have been battling to establish all year.

If you have no cash savings at all, and you suddenly become unemployed, or need to pay large medical bills you could be very vulnerable. If you are saving more than 10 percent of your gross salary in investments over and above what you put aside for your tithes and your retirement plan, that is a good sign. If you have no savings at all, it is worrisome.

    5. Budgeting

Where does all your money go? Have you managed to keep your household spending under control? Do you have a working budget in place? Write down all your income and all your essential expenses. If you have been living more or less within your means and try to stick to a household budget, give yourself a green dot. A yellow dot shows some effort in this regard but where there is always more month at the end of the money, give yourself a red dot.

    6. Debt

If you are like the average Nigerian you are probably carrying some sort of debt; this might be a bank loan, or borrowings from family, friends or your community club. Are you in debt? How much do you know about your car loan, or your home loan? What is the interest rate on your mortgage? Have you tried to have it reduced? Even a small reduction in the interest rate can make a big difference over the life of your mortgage or other long-term loans.

How you deal with your debt will have a big impact on your financial future. It is important to list out all your debt at the end of the year so that you can devise a plan on how to keep it under control and ultimately pay it off.

Your borrowing behaviour affects the lenders attitude towards you now and in future. If you have had a good credit history, you will be in a good position to negotiate for new loans at good rates and should give yourself a green. If you have been a little delinquent or lax and caused your lenders some concern, this may have weakened your profile somewhat, and you should give yourself a yellow. If you have been defaulting on your interest payments you deserve a red dot.

    7. Investments

What is the return on your stock, bond, or mutual fund investments? Are you satisfied with their performance or is it time to make some changes? Consolidate your investments among one or two strong institutions where you can monitor your progress more efficiently.

Are you sure that your investments are properly diversified and that they are the right vehicles to help you achieve your short and long term investment goals. If you are you too heavily weighted in one asset class, plan to rebalance your portfolio over a period of time.

    8. Retirement Plans

Ideally, you should have started planning for your retirement as soon as you started your first job as starting at a younger age naturally gives you more time to put away a significant fund. If you are older, and retirement is looming, don’t despair; there are still ways you can make up for lost time. What’s important is to get started and the sooner the better.

If you are employed, you should be registered with a Pension Fund Administrator or have a retirement plan in place to ensure that you have enough to live on in your later years.

    9. Review your insurance policies

Your age, family situation, health, and goals will influence the level of risk you can tolerate and the level of insurance you take on. At least once each year gather your insurance records and review the adequacy of your coverage. Be sure to evaluate all your insurance cover including health, life insurance, homeowners insurance, auto insurance, renters insurance, etc and determine what changes might be required fro the coming year.

If you have a comprehensive medical and health insurance plan that covers you and your family, and your car, home or other valuable personal property are up to date, give yourself a green dot. Not being up to date with your insurance makes you vulnerable to unexpected disasters or a sudden change in your circumstances resulting in a loss of earnings, or wealth. You deserve a red dot for this.

    10. Estate Plans

Do you have a will or trust or some other vehicle that could ensure that your loved ones are protected in the event of their incapacity or demise. If you do have an estate plan, when last did you review it? Does your will still fairly reflect your personal wishes for the distribution of your assets? Have the personal or financial circumstances or your beneficiaries significantly changed over the past year? Keep your will up to date and make sure that other people know where it is.

If you have something in place, give yourself a green. A partial plan shows you have some intentions. Give yourself a yellow dot but do not keep procrastinating; follow the plans through. If you have nothing in place, you are placing your family and heirs in financial risk and deserve a bright red dot.

    11. Giving

Have you been a blessing to others this year? What have you done or what have you given away? Even if you scored a red dot now, you can still make it green before the end of the year. Give back just a little of what you have received. You will be blessed by this. The joy of giving is the greatest investment of all.

    Get started

Your annual check-up helps you to be proactive so that you can spot potential problems before they fester and become real problems that you must react to. It should throw up areas of concern so that you can begin to pay some attention to these. Think about what you can do to improve in each area. You don’t have to tackle them all at once; even a small step in the right direction could help you financially. The result is financial success and independence now, and in the future. Make the time, no matter how busy you are; take just a few hours out of your busy holiday schedule and focus on your finances. You will feel much better about your finances as you head into the New Year.
