Pregnant Women Can and Should Exercise

$

Pregnant women can and should exercise in moderation unless there are health factors or risks that prevent them from participating in a fitness program. This should consist of intervals of no more than thirty minutes at a time, several days each week if not every day of the week. Exercising has been proven to help pregnant women feel and look better, and also will help in minimizing the amount of weight gained during pregnancy.

pregnancy expectant mumKeeping fit during pregnancy can help prevent or avoid problems such as gestational diabetes, a common form of diabetes that sometimes develops during pregnancy. It will also help increase stamina, which will be needed for labor delivery and increase your physical and emotional well-being before and after delivery. Staying in shape will also help speed your recovery after the birth of your baby. Always be sure to consult with your doctor before beginning any type of fitness program while you are pregnant.

Fitness programs that are appropriate for pregnant women include walking, swimming, low or no-impact aerobics (done at a mild pace), yoga, and Pilates for as long as you are able to complete the required moves. You should always avoid activities that can put you at a high risk for injury. Forms of sports or exercise that may cause you to be hit in the abdomen or are performed lying flat on your back are considered high risk. This is extremely important after the third month.

There are numerous benefits that exercise brings to a pregnant woman. You will burn calories, which will help prevent any excessive weight gain. If you work out on a regular basis, you will improve the condition of your joints and muscles, which will be very helpful during the birth of your baby. The long-term effects will also continue after giving birth and will also help you lower your risk of heart disease and many other serious illnesses.

Staying in shape will help to relieve any anxiety and stress you may feel. It will also help to prevent the “baby blues” that many new mothers experience after the birth of their child. This is valuable information since so many new mothers worry if postpartum depression will affect their lives and the lives of their family. Participating in fitness programs while pregnant gives many emotional as well as physical benefits.

Once your doctor give you the go ahead to begin a fitness program, decide on a program that fits both your likes and schedule. Keep in mind that it is best if you do not exceed a 30-minute period of time while exercising. If you are finding it difficult to pick a program, try several different types of exercises that are appropriate for pregnant women then decide which you enjoy the most. You may want to incorporate a variety of exercises into your routine to help prevent boredom and discouragement.

Exercising while you are pregnant is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your unborn child.

How to Create a Family Budget

$
0
0

family budgetThis article discusses how to create a family budget and why it is important in the long run. Most families have multiple sources of income. And when there are multiple spenders, that makes things much more confusing. This is one of the main reasons that families lack a formal budget. But having a budget and sticking to it can greatly improve a family’s financial outlook.

Making a family budget may be tricky, but it can be done. Here’s how.

1. Take inventory of all income. If a certain source of income fluctuates from month to month, use the lowest amount or use the average income received.
2. Keep track of all expenses for a month or so by taking note of every spend you make. Keep all of your receipts, and ask all family members to turn theirs in to you each day.
3. Add up your monthly expenses. Be sure to include bills, debt payments, groceries, and everyday expenses such as lunch, credit and transportation costs.
4. Get the family together and discuss ways you can trim the budget. Getting input from other family members will help you determine which expenses are necessary and which ones could be cut down or eliminated. Maybe you or your spouse could start taking lunch to work instead of eating out.
5. In addition to individual expenses, discuss how you can cut down on the electric bill, groceries and other necessary family expenses. Consider such things as carpooling.
6. Estimate how much you can save on regular expenses, and cut the completely unnecessary items out of the budget. Then refigure it and see where you stand.
7. If you end up with a surplus, allocate a portion of it to savings. If you’re in the red, go back and rework the budget until you have more income than expenses.

Being Realistic

One reason that family budgets often fail is because they’re just not realistic. It’s great to cut down on expenses, but sometimes we tend to go too far. For example, cutting entertainment out of the budget completely might look good on paper, but we all need a little diversion every now and then.

Instead of cutting such things out of the budget completely, consider finding ways to lower the cost. Going back to the entertainment example, maybe you’ve been going to dinner and a movie as a family twice a month. But instead eating at home and renting a movie to watch at home would be much cheaper, and you would still get to spend quality time together.

Individual expenses can also be tricky. This can be resolved by allocating a certain amount for each family member to spend each week. If someone spends his entire amount before the week is up, reevaluate his expenses and adjust if necessary.

Creating a family budget can help keep spending under control, leaving more money to pay down debts and save for future goals. But in order to succeed, close monitoring is essential. Your efforts will be rewarded, however, with less financial stress and more money in the long run.

Housemaid Abducts Her Bosses Two Children

According to Punch, a housemaid abducts her bosses two children, she is identified simply as Juliet.

kidnapped childrenThe 24-year-old housemaid was said to have fled home with the kids –Rafael (3), and 15-month-old Michael on Sunday evening after their parents went out. The boss,Onajite reportedly secured the service of the housemaid last Tuesday through the sale portal,OLX, that posted a number on the website for anyone interested in a “humble” housemaid to apply ─ an advertisement to which Onajite responded.

The children were allegedly kidnapped after the grand mum and nurse went to bed.

According to The Paradigm, Onajite said, “After we came back from the church, the children looked tired and I told Juliet to take Michael to bed while I went to do my hair. He had not slept when I came back. That day (Sunday) was my husband’s birthday and we decided to have a couple’s outing. We told her to take the children to bed immediately because they were very tired. “We got back home at 9pm. It was Abigail, the nurse, that opened the door for us. When we entered, everywhere was quiet and that was when my husband became suspicious because usually, our children would have run from upstairs to say welcome.

We cannot stress enough the importance of vetting and doing a background check of every staff that is hired into your homes especially when they are to care for your children. They are strangers and if not carefully selected bring more harm than good to the home and the family that they are supposed to care for.  Let’s be wary of these ‘strangers’ we open our homes to all in the name of domestic-helps. Many of us engage them based on face value and the stories they might have told you about themselves while being interviewed, which are not always true. We must all embrace background check as a minimum must do, confirm their addresses, confirm a real guarantor and cross check with their past employer.

We join the family in praying that Rafael and Michael would be found safe and sound and returned home to their family.

DALM | What I Learned from Swimming

$

Fear is a state of mind and therefore it is something that can be altered – DALM, What I learned from swimming.

swimmingOver the year the children have not been swimming because of one bout of cold or the other, i feel like we are constantly nursing a cold. Did you know that on average children have 8 to 10 cases of colds a year?  That is a lot of time to be nursing running noses. Anyway as a result of all the colds I in my Mummy mind figured that swimming would aggravate the colds. So I keep on sending messages to school that they cannot swim because they have colds. After a while of this I noticed that the children started to have an aversion and a fear of water. I cannot swim so I wasn’t very happy about this as I didn’t want my children to wind up like me, only able to stare at the pool and not be able to swim in it.

A visit to our trusted paediatrician Dr B and a conversation around this allayed my fears. She mentioned that swimming does not cause colds nor will it give them colds. She advised that one just has to be smarter about their exposure in the swimming pool by closely monitoring how long they swim for and drying them off quickly after they come out etc.

This was what I needed to reconsider our embargo on swimming because of colds and allergies. The final push came when we went to a birthday party and this little girl was swimming like a fish. She looked so confident in the water and was clearly enjoying her herself in the pool that even I longed to be able to swim half as well as this little swimming star!

So there and then I exchange numbers with the swimming coach and decide that we all will start learning how to swim – the children and I! Yes I was also going to attempt to learn how to swim (never mind my last lesson was when i was in Primary 2)!

What  I have learnt from the children learning swimming so far is that there are some elements that are important as you start something new and work on overcoming fear -

  • Encouragement
  • Consistency
  • No excuses
  • Making time
  • Finding the right coach

Encouraging the children with words of encouragement keeps them motivated to try. Keeping up with the lessons and making sure that despite all the initial hesitations we were always at the pool ready for lessons did make a huge difference. We didn’t have lessons based on whether they felt like it or not, we did it because we had scheduled the time for it and as I reminded them I had already paid for the lessons. Lastly finding the right coach is important as the coach we got is very good with children, patient and knows how to balance firmness with coaxing.

In less than a month for children who were fearful of swimming, are more confident and are actually swimming at a basic level now.

I on the other hand with my grand plans is yet to start my swimming lessons because I don’t know where to find a swimsuit in the whole of Lagos! My swim instructor did offer me “Okrika” which apparently means “fairly used swimsuits” I politely said no thank you, though in my head I was screaming “eeewwww – used swimsuits”?!

So with most things in life just keep going and you will eventually get good at it! I ignored the tears knowing that it is for their own good to be comfortable in the pool from a young age.

P&G Launches its Driest Diaper, Pampers Baby-Dry

Lagos, December 10, 2014: Procter and Gamble, Nigeria’s leading producer of consumer goods and maker of Pampers baby diapers launched its newly improved Pampers Baby-Dry into the baby care market.

At the launch event held at the P&G plant in Agbara, Ogun state, Christofer Fuchs, Associate Director R&D Baby Care Europe Middle East and Africa, Procter and Gamble, while addressing mothers and members of the media, said that Pampers is, committed to the healthy and happy development of babies.

In his words: “Our newly improved Pampers diaper is borne out of extensive research and development, consumer studies and continuous feedback from consumers. We do this to ensure premium comfort for our babies and consequently contribute to the happy and healthy development of babies”.

“The latest improvement to our Pampers diapers is the new stretchy sides. We understand that babies’ tummy expands as much as 8cm during the night. This makes diapers loosen and leakages occur. With our new stretch feature, Pampers expands and relaxes with the baby’s tummy, thereby efficiently preventing leakages. In addition, the super gel in the diaper locks wetness away better than ordinary diapers, keeping the baby comfortable all night”, Christofer added.

Also commenting on the new innovation, Iphie Chuks-Adizue, Brand Manager Pampers Nigeria said, “more than 50 million babies experience the comfort and dryness of Pampers every year worldwide, so with our latest improvement, Pampers Baby-Dry which is similar to our UK offering as you may have noticed, provides superior dryness for our babies and adapts to the baby’s shape and movements for a good night’s sleep and a great next morning. One Pampers diaper is guaranteed to keep your baby dry throughout the night”.

She also commented on the history of P&G, The journey began in 1956 with Victor Mills, a P&G researcher who disliked changing the cloth diapers of his newborn grandchild. He assigned fellow researchers in P&G’s Exploratory Division in Miami Valley, Ohio to look into making a better disposable diaper. That research birthed Pampers in 1961. Many years later, we are still always ready to implement the latest and most advanced technology obtainable to improve our brands to meet the expectations of our consumers.

She went on to mention that this product ensures One Pampers diaper is guaranteed to keep your baby dry throughout the night. Dryness is guaranteed; otherwise you can have your money back. Yes, I said it; Dryness and comfort guaranteed or your money back. Pampers is the leading baby diaper in West Africa and we have committed 20 years in Nigeria to improving the healthy development of every child. This plant, which is the single highest investment made by an American company in Nigeria, is a testimony of that commitment. I urge you to continue to trust us and we promise to always care for your babies.

There was a tour of the facility and demonstrations on the absorbance capabilities of the new Pampers which provided participants the opportunity to experience the Pampers innovation first hand.

Reacting to the product demonstrations at the launch, popular Actress and mother, Dakore Egbuson-Akande applauded P&G on the newly upgraded product. She said: “P&G has absolutely outdone itself this time. I must confess that this new Pampers beats my expectations. Having used the product for my baby, I encourage all mothers to try it, because it is truly effective at keeping my baby dry and comfortable”.

The 4.8 billion naira Pampers manufacturing plant was commissioned in March 2014, generating over 2,000 direct job and boosting consumer goods production in the country.

The new Pampers Baby-Dry is available in all major shops, markets and retail outlets across Nigeria

Some Dangers of The Internet

$
0
0

The need for awareness on some of the dangers of the internet continue to increase. Accordingly parents and caregivers need to teach children about the good and the bad sides of the internet. As children have access to the internet early they also need to be aware that the internet can be used to hurt people.

ONLINE DANGERSI came across a story  (from pulseng) of a man who posted indecent pictures of a woman he had been dating because she was no longer giving him money on demand. He decided to blackmail her by putting her nude pictures on the internet. I wonder did he spend anytime thinking about how she would feel? She is a single mum so she has a child or children, did he think about what the effect could be on her children?

Beware of Actions. Everyone needs to be careful of their vulnerability on the internet. Children especially should be taught to be cautious in these days of “selfies” and everyone with a camera enabled device. This generation is being raised in a world that doesn’t seem to forget – I say this because the world wide web stores everything! They should learn to ask “What are you doing and why are you doing it” and be mindful that actions come with consequences. Every picture they take go viral quickly and end up on the internet. Teaching children internet etiquette is one of the ways to save them from being victims and or from using the internet inappropriately. Lastly overall it is better to avoid taking inappropriate pictures that can put you in an awkward position later. No one has control over the actions of the person who has the picture with them.

Further inquiries brought up that the practice of posting inappropriate pictures to punish or embarrass is actually on the rise and is called “Revenge Porn”

Revenge porn is sexually explicit media that is publicly shared online without the consent of the pictured individual.Revenge porn may be uploaded by ex-partners with an intention to shame or embarrass the pictured individual, or by hacker. Many of the images are pictures taken by the pictured persons themselves, or selfies with victims mostly being women. The uploaded formerly-private explicit images are often accompanied by personal information, including the pictured individual’s full name, links to Facebook and social media profiles or addresses. Nations which have passed laws against revenge porn include Israel, Germany, and twelve states within the United States. (Wikipedia)

Let us all be aware and educate our children accordingly about some of the dangers of the internet.
