Ugandan Nanny Sentenced to Four Years

The Ugandan nanny who was caught on tape inflicting unimaginable attack on the toddler in her care has been sentenced to four years in jail. She was also reported to have made some “excuse” as to her actions and begging for forgiveness.

The 22-year-old maid, Jolly Tumuhiirwe, originally pleaded guilty last week to torture, but later the charge was reduced to abuse, to which she also pleaded guilty to on Friday.

Chief Magistrate Lillian Buchan told Tumuhiirwe she had committed an “unjustifiable and inexcusable” crime.

She gave her a four-year sentence due to the “ruthlessness exhibited” on an “innocent, helpless child”.

Worried parents, who installed a hidden camera to film the situation when they were at work, were shocked to see the footage showing the maid throwing their 18-month-old daughter to the floor.

Tumuhiirwe is seen trying to force feed the child, before slapping her hard. After the girl vomits, the maid throws her facedown on to a hard floor, then hits her with a torch on the bottom.  She then kicks the child’s face and stomach before putting her entire weight on the girl’s back, and then drags her out of the room, apparently unconscious.

The video has been seen or shared hundreds of thousands of times on social media.

Ugandan newspapers called the footage “spine-chilling” and “very disturbing”.

The child’s mother, Angela Mbabazi, broke down outside the court after sentencing, putting her hands over her face. Her husband, Eric Kamanzi, 32, told reporters the couple had shared the video with other parents “so they can take a lesson from it”.

The case has gathered wide attention in Uganda, where many middle class parents hire maids to look after their children. Maids in Uganda are often poorly paid, and regularly live in the houses where they work.

The UN children’s agency chief in Uganda has condemned the abuse.

“The video of this baby being beaten is shocking,” UNICEF head Aida Girma said. “Any such act of abuse and violence against children is completely unacceptable.”

DALM | What are our Daughters Wearing

$

From The Diary Adventures of LagosMums

What are our daughters wearing? Really who is checking what your daughter is wearing out of the house? Is she dressing for her age or over her age?

I was at a birthday party for the children at GET arena and saw a pretty girl who was probably between 13 and 15 years old. She wore a top tucked into very short shorts! The shorts were really short and really tight. I contemplated with my hubby whether I could have a conversation with her to discuss her choice of an outfit and in particular to talk about her shorts. I wanted to ask her:-

1) Why did she choose to wear the shorts

2) What did she think the shorts did for her? Did she think they made her look good?

3) Was she trying to get attention? (I would then share with her that your clothes call attention to you, whether you want it to or not)

4) She was a pretty girl and if she wore more “appropriate” clothing she would still be a very pretty girl (not that being pretty or not is dependent on what you wear)

Short shorts

She did come out of a house and I would imagine that there was an adult who saw her put on this outfit and go out of the house. Children no matter how grown and independent they appear are still children and are not aware of all the upsides or downsides of their actions and choices – including dressing.

People whether we like it or not make certain decisions about us (and our children) based on outfits we wear. If you dress as if you are available then people will think that you are available, your dressing should portray how you want to be seen or addressed. These type of short shorts that cut into your crotch cannot possibly be seen in any other way than trying to entice people and to call attention to yourself. The truth is that the world judges people based on how you carry yourself and how you dress is one of the main ways you will be addressed or viewed.

Anyway back to the situation at hand, I really was torn between saying something to this young girl or minding my business. I wanted to understand why she thought this pair of shorts were a good choice to wear out of her house.

As it would turn out we were both leaving and walking to the car park at the same time, she was a few steps in front of us. Suddenly we hear whistles with men leering and literally feasting on her with their eyes from a bus driving by in a slow crawl traffic. She was clearly uncomfortable and she picked up her step and tried to walk by quickly. The gentlemen continued to stick their heads out of the bus and stare at her back view, whistling, smiling at each other and shaking their heads.

This was the Ah ha moment to me (i could have said something if i has spoken to her previously)! People will look at you and feast on your body if you offer them a glance. Parents lets remember that the way our children and young developing girls dress presents them a certain way to the world…and this you cannot control. Whether or not my daughter understands it, it is my job to protect her from being leered at like that and one way to avoid this is to dress modestly. Children can look ‘stylish” without exposing themselves.

Let’s teach our girls that it is better to dress in such a way that people cannot “misinterpret” what they are about. As parents we should guide what our children wear and help to teach what parts should stay covered. May they not fall into the hands of people with evil intentions.

I cringe to think what could have happened if this girl walked into the midst of these men by herself unprotected and alone.

What do you think is dressing a form of freedom of speech and so people should wear whatever they feel like? Do you vet what your children wear?

Christmas Time and Your Domestic Staff

$
0
0

Christmas is family time and most people want to spend time with their families. Your domestic staff is no different and you should be fair to give them the time they need to also celebrate with their families at this time of the year. Those who might not celebrate christmas would at the minimum want to usher in the New Year in with their families.

christmasIt is not a hard or fast rule as there will be some staff who might not want to go home to be with their families, however this should be discussed with them. Do not deny them, nor offer them the opportunity to go home to their families over Christmas. I know some bosses will show concern that Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year, family visits and all the various festivities. However remember as you are “enjoying” at this time of the year, your domestic staff is still “working” and will  no doubt also desire sometime to celebrate, rest and recharge.

This time of the year does see some increase in crime rates that are facilitated by domestic staff, as a result end of the year might not be the best time to hire new staff. Some dishonest ones are looking for a quick way to make money and might have criminal intent but do please note this is not all, but some of them. Some truly need to earn and are looking for work over the holiday period to be able to pay school fees or rent in the new year. The critical step necessary are the background checks, the interviewing process, the references that you carry out and prayers before you hire staff, especially when if it is at end of the year.

Christmas time is a good time to appreciate your staff and to show them that you value their service to your home and family. This is not the time to pay them half of their pay as a way to ensure that they return to work after they have gone home for Christmas. You would not appreciate if your boss withheld some of your pay for some reason or the other to tie you in. Pay them for their work and on top of that appreciate them with a bonus and gifts. There is nothing wrong with sending some gifts home to their parents and family. Christmas is about showing love and they deserve some love as well from you.

They see all the “decadence” with the hampers and cakes, Christmas parties, gifts you give your children, your attitude towards them is more important than the actual gift in itself. A gift of appreciation just shows that you value them and you care about them. Who doesn’t respond to being valued? Your nanny keeps the children entertained, cleans their room and washes their clothes, cooks their meals and takes all those trips to birthday parties with them. Perhaps you have a house help who keeps the house clean, does grocery shopping and does laundry. Appreciate them for what they do.

So this Christmas treat your domestic staff well, appreciate them for the year (or months) of service to your family. Note of caution here, if you cannot bring yourself to appreciate your staff at this time of the year when there is love flowing everywhere, then perhaps this staff should not be with you.

Lastly if your staff needs to go home for end of the year, you will survive without a nanny or house help for a week or two! Everyone can pitch in and the house will not break down :)

Merry Christmas!

Oxford overtakes Cambridge as top research University

Cambridge University has been nudged off its perch as Britain’s leading research university, overtaken by its traditional rival Oxford and the London powerhouses after a two-year-long assessment of research quality.

cambridgeProf Madeleine Atkins, the chief executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, said the results were “the culmination of the world’s largest exercise to assess the quality of research” and helped make Britain’s universities world leaders. “Our funding has virtually no strings attached and the Ref provides accountability for that funding,” she said.

This time 20% of the ratings awarded in each subject were based on the impact of individual pieces of research – in an attempt to measure reach and effectiveness – and it was in this category that institutions such as Cardiff thrived.

Oxford is set to take the largest share of the block funding, after almost half of the research produced by its 2,400 academic staff was given the top four-star rating by panels of judges and experts in each subject, while the output of University College London’s 2,600 staff placed it above Cambridge’s 2,100, according to analysis of the results by Research Fortnight.

The results mean that an increasing proportion of research funding is likely to be sucked up by the so-called “Golden Triangle” of Oxford, Cambridge and London universities, according to William Cullerne Bown of Research Fortnight, which analyses higher education funding.

Happy New Year 2015

New Year Resolution to be a More Involved Parent

$
0
0

A New Year brings an almost involuntary reaction to set some New Year resolutions and goals. A New  Year can also be a time to do “more” of something. A New Year resolution to be a more involved parent is a worthy goal. It is a chance to try something new, try something you were not able to achieve in the past year. While there are a lot of the more general resolutions like lose weight, work out more, save more…what about deciding to be a more involved Parent?Happy New Year

  • Spend Quality  Time – Spending quality time with your children and really focus on them. It does not qualify to be in the same place and then sit glued to the television, blackberry or Ipad. No matter how small the amount of time you have to spend with them make it really count as quality time that your child will enjoy. Pencil the time in if you have to. You can do anything with them during this time you can  read, play with  toys, talk…the only rule is that the time should be uninterrupted.
  • Have One Meal Together – Commit to have at least one meal together as a family,  it is a good idea to start setting up family meal time once children can talk. Meal time  is a good time for the family to come together and discuss things as a family. To be practicable you could start with at least one day a week and build on it. It encourages bonding,
  • Pray Together – Teaching your children to pray daily is a good way to introduce spirituality to your children and teaching them about God. if you take the time to show them how important it is they will grow up making God their priority and making time to pray and read the word will become part of their lives. Getting practice praying with the family builds their confidence and encourages them to pray. Prayer time becomes a time to take family needs and thanksgiving to God.
  • Visit their Schools – Some parents are able to drop and pick their children in school regularly, while some parents are only able to show up on the expected open days and school events. Try to schedule sometime now and then to just pop into your child’s school. There is something nice about seeing the teachers and observing your child’s learning environment.
  • Read Together – Read together, start with a chapter a day if you are short on time. If you have older children you can read the newspapers or a magazine together. Reading leads to interaction and discussing.
  • Technology Free Time – Decide to have time as a family where no devices are allowed. How many times do you see parents sitting with their children and they are all on one device or the other. Encourage time when you are together with no ipad or smartphone. Help to build social interaction skills in your children by spending face-to-face time.

What other ways do you plan to be a better parent this year?
