5 Tips for Raising Polite Children

$

In an earlier post we talked about the issue of more and more children who do not seem to have manners and are not polite. They seem to leave adults asking “where are your manner”. Here are 5 tips for raising polite children.

1. Demystify what Manners are:

Manners are a way of behaving that is expected of you, which shows respect for others and proper conduct. Teach your children what standards you want in your household, classroom, campus, educational institution and make them compliant. Parents give your children a foundation that speaks to good upbringing.

2. Meeting & Greeting:

This is a basic activity that should come naturally as an act of politeness. Teach these steps:

(a) Stand up

(b) Keep your head up

(c) Smile

(d) Say Hello (Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening)

(e) Address correctly ( Ma, Sir)

(f) Correct eye contact

When meeting people

(a) Say your name

(b) Say something about yourself

(c) Be first to greet

(d)  Say goodbye when leaving

Polite Children

3. Magic Words

“Manners are priceless but the lack of it can cost millions”. Start with yourself and make magic words a part of your vocabulary. In raising polite children have the following words engaged in their daily conversation skills.

(a) Please

(b) Thank you

(c) Excuse me

(d) No thank you

(e) You are welcome

(f) Welcome

(g) Yes please

(h) Pardon me

Magic words complete your request for help, permission and favours. Without magic words your request is incomplete. Test your children, ask them how many times they used the word “please” today.

communication

4. Conversation Skills

Teach your child to speak up and speak out whenever they are talking or being spoken to. The first strategy is to always look up with direct eye contact, they are traits of a successful professional. Other steps include:

(a) Show interest

(b) Speak clearly

(c) Listen attentively

(d) Respond with confidence

(e) Ask questions

(f) Avoid bragging about themselves

5. Helping Hand

Teach your children to always offer a helping hand well before they are asked. When mum or dad look like they could do with help let them be there to assist. Help around the house is always needed. A polite child can ask if help is needed in the kitchen, cleaning the car or cleaning the house.

How Busy Mums Stay Organized

$

Mums are the master jugglers, always attempting to take care of several things at once. It can seem overwhelming to stay organised and manage the needs of the entire household, career, business, spouse, siblings, children, yourself and the many other responsibilities you have. If you feel like you need to be more organised in your life, here are some great ideas right here to help you get started.

Places for Things

The first trick is to have a place assigned for the various things in your home. Items should be close to where they are used and where they should be. You may find it beneficial to label certain drawers or cabinets to help remind others in the home where to return things when they are finished using them.

Routine

Develop a routine for everyone. You may even find it easier if you post the routine somewhere everyone can see. By doing this, everybody knows what time meals are served, when diesel needs to be bought etc. It may take some time to get your family into it. Practice the routine in a friendly and fun way until everyone gets used to it.

Avoid Clutter

Clean out your closets and other areas on a regular basis. When your children have outgrown clothes, donate them or store them in a properly labeled “hand-me-down” box. Make a rule for yourself that if you purchase a new item of clothing that you give one away. The same goes for toys. When your children receive new toys, allow them to pick out the same number of toys to donate or swap with a freind.

How Busy Mums Stay Organized

Get Everyone Involved

Involve the rest of your family. You should not have to do all of the organizing on your own. If your children have a tendency to bring stuff into the living room and leave it there, get a box for each child and label it. At a certain time each day, have the children go through the house and put all of their belongings in the box and return them to their room.

Plan Meals Ahead

Another way to stay organised is to plan your meals a week or two weeks at a time. Make a list of what you plan to serve. Then, go through your refrigerator and cabinets, marking down the items you already have and make your grocery shopping list. It is helpful if you make meals in bulk and save the leftovers for the following evening.

There are many other tips to staying organised but these are a few to get you started.

Raising Grateful Children

$
0
0

The saying “charity begins at home” without doubt indicates the importance of a parent in the development of their children. Raising grateful children has it’s root in raising children who have a great foundation and relationship with their parents. Parents are the very first line of instructors a child has to teach the child the right choices to make and those to avoid. Children watch most by watching than just being told.

We teach our children the choices that need to be made by showing them the choices we make and this starts from when they are young. These are some things every parent should be capable of doing to teach and show their children how to be grateful for their childhood which they carry into their future.

A Great Childhood

Great childhoods are not hard to create. Children can have fun in almost any household, no matter how well off or financially troubled the parents are. Children do not need a chest full of toys or to travel all over the world. They have their imaginations and it is usually enough. What they do need is a household that encourages curiosity and parents who spend time helping their children develop.

Things Every Parent Must Do To Have Grateful Children

Just Enough Attention

Some parents smother their children, making their children overly reliant upon them therefore limiting their ability to be independent.

Then you have the parents who are either too busy or too aloof to give their children attention; failing to guide them and to be parents. Parenting is a balancing act. You balance your personal time with the time needed to maintain a healthy mother/father/son/daughter relationship.

Love

Children need love growing up. It is not about making them feel overly special or over cuddling them. It is about teaching them the importance of love, teaching them how interpersonal relationships are supposed to work.

If parents don’t have strong relationships with their children, it may be harder for them to have any strong relationships in later years.

Things Every Parent Must Do To Have Grateful Children

Respect

Respect is not only for your elders; it’s also the other way around. In fact, it’s every way around. Each individual should have respect for every other individual. Demanding respect because you are a parent tells your child that you ought to be respected just because you are his or her parent and this does not necessarily teach your child that everyone deserves respect.

The only way to teach respect is to be respectful. That goes for the way you speak to your children and the way you treat them, the way you respect their point of view.

Clear Guidance And Good Advice.

A parent is supposed to guide and give good advice to their children. There is no excuse for failing to give your children clear guidance and having a trusting relationship. If you have a clear and open line of communication then it is easier to grow with your child and continue to be a good trusted sounding board.

Things Every Parent Must Do To Have Grateful Children

Loving to Learn

Parents are the very first teachers. Once your children approach school age, do not give all the responsibility to teachers in school, you are still the best instructor and you can encourage your child’s learning.

Teach your children early on and they’ll love learning. If they love to learn, they cannot fail in life. Mission accomplished.

Be There

Having parents who support you, listen to you and who are there for you when the going gets tough in every form of the meaning, is something that is truly priceless. The family bond can be extremely powerful if worked on from the beginning and continuously nurtured. It is the ideal support team for when life throws it challenges.

Parents should be friends with their children. We should be able to talk with them and share. Parents and children should learn to understand each other and learn to have open dialogue. Having loving parents who care for you is truly something to be thankful for.

End Of School Year Prayer

$

0

The children are starting to round up the school year and I liked these series of prayers I came across for the end of school year prayer. Your children can adapt and turn it into prayers that suit them, but it is a great idea to pray for the end of the school year. Most people remember to pray at the beginning of something or at the start of the school year.

End of school year prayer

Father,

Thank you for our school
Thank you for the fun we have with friends
Thank you for the opportunity to learn
Thank you for the new experiences we enjoy
Thank you for clubs and sports
Thank you for caring teachers

Amen

school

May God’s blessing go with us today

End of school year blessing for teachers and children

May God’s blessing go with us today,
At the end of this school year we pray.
That you keep us safe and give us rest
So we start again renewed and refreshed.
Full of health, full of fun
Ready to come and learn again.

May God’s blessing go with us today,
As we begin our school holiday.
Give your peace and your joy,
To every girl and every boy.
Help the teachers to enjoy the break,
and prepare and plan for the new intake.

May God’s blessings await us next year,
To embrace each new challenge without fear.
Fill this school with your love,
and guide our hearts from above.
Full of faith, full of hope,
full of joy, and full of love.

Amen.

A classroom prayer

Dear God

Thank you for our school. We pray it would be a safe place of learning, fun and friendship. Please watch over all our teachers, children and families.

Help us to learn new things, to explore the world together and to play and be happy.

Help us to have love for each other, to have forgiveness at our heart, and to build kindness into every day.

Amen.

Keep The Marriage Alive

$
0
0

Couple I’m sure someone’s wondering what keeping the marriage alive has to do with motherhood. Sorry to burst your bubble, the quality of your marriage has a great deal to do with how well your children turn out.

If you are not sure, just do a survey. Children from divorced homes find it harder to deal with certain circumstances. Some have to deal with the guilt of being responsible for their parents’ divorce. Some are so desperate for attention that they play on their parents’ emotions to get whatever they want. Girls that have seen their mothers fend for themselves have no idea what a father figure is like and find it difficult to be vulnerable with their husbands. Young men that have never seen a marriage work have no idea how to keep a home together. Even parents that stayed together in a turbulent marriage give their children the impression that a marriage is to be endured and not be enjoyed. The quality of your marriage directly affects the kind of children you raise.

The principle is simple really. We are all a product of our backgrounds. What you produce is what you’ve seen happen around you day in, day out. If a boy grows up to see his father hit his mother, chances are that he will hit his wife too. He might not necessarily like it but his human system has become conditioned to accept that lifestyle as normal. There are of course some exceptions, but the former is the generally the case.

We produce wholesome children if we provide them with a wholesome environment to grow. One way to test if you are on the right track is to ask yourself if you would want your children’s marriages to be like yours. Some answers may be “yes”, some may be” no” and some may be in “some areas”.

Many people have defined love as a feeling in your stomach that gives you butterflies and makes you look starry eyed. While I believe that you should be attracted and have strong feelings for your spouse, I have come to realize that those butterfly feelings are not what sustains marriage, the act of love does.

LoveLove is patient, kind, forgiving, always thinks of the best, is kind, does not envy, is not prideful, is not rude, is not selfish, is not easily provoked, does not rejoice in wrong doing, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things.

Different people are in different phases of marriage. Some are probably just starting out and are still dovey eyed and unaware of challenges that life will throw at you. Marriage I believe is one of the most beautiful things that happens in a person’s life, but it has to be nurtured. It is in these attributes stated above that marriage is truly nurtured. Are you kind? Do you easily forgive or do you keep record of wrongs? Is it always about you? The early years of marriage is the time to apply these well tested principles and to ensure that your marriage truly becomes the one of your dreams.

Some are in the phase of just being tired. They’ve been married for a while and just couldn’t care less. They are worn out and all the spark in the marriage is gone. Well I have news from you. Good marriages just don’t happen, they are worked at. Maybe you should spend more time together, remember what drew you together in the first place. Are you still genuinely concerned about your spouse or are you just overwhelmed with life? Take a break and spend some time together. The main purpose is to bond, be friends again and truly love again, based on the principles stated above.

There are some who have probably given up on their marriage. Maybe they are on their way to being separated or getting a divorce. It is sad when I see things like this happen because it means that two people have decided that there is no way they can mend what is broken between them and they won’t even try again. I don’t know the circumstances of what led to where you are right now, but sometimes help is just by the corner. Maybe giving it one more chance will make a difference.

The bedrock of a happy marriage in the end is friendship. I watch older couples who have been married for a while and I see in some, well tested friendship. They can talk for hours, laugh together and just enjoy being in each other’s company. When you speak to these couples, you hear loads and loads of advice. One of the most popular ones I’ve heard is “don’t stop being friends.”Couple

My question to you is; “Is your spouse still your best friend?” Your marriage is one of the best ways to truly bring up children. Children see forgiveness first hand, they see kindness play out, they see you being patient and they see you believing the best. They see the essence of true character.

It’s not the things we say that mold children. It is what they see. You have an opportunity to mold your children properly by helping them see what true marriage looks like.

Here are some pictures from the LagosMums 2nd Annual Parenting and Networking event. The event themed “What Are You Balancing” held on Saturday, 5th of December 2015, at the WheatBaker Hotel. It was an awesome event, inspiring, informative and we had fun! We talked about financial planning, work- life balance, being balanced from the inside and what our children are really feeling and saying.

Thank you to all our wonderful speakers, the mums and few dads who attended and our awesome sponsors! Lovely photographs courtesy of Fotolight House.
