Oprah Winfrey is set to share her experiences and life lessons in a memoir. Her memoir will be titled The Life You Want. The media mogul and philanthropist’s tell-all memoir is set to be released in January 2017, according to an article on Huffington Post.

Oprah’s upcoming memoir is expected to get considerably personal.  She is quoted as saying “All of my experiences, even the painful ones, have been there to teach me something about life.”

Oprah knows how to pick great books to read through her book club so we can be sure that her memoir would be an amazing book in itself.

Bob Miller, The president and publisher of Flatiron Books who will publish Oprah’s memoir had this to say “We’re deeply honoured to publish The Life You Want, which is such a remarkable combination of Oprah’s life story and the lessons we can all draw from it for our personal growth.”

This book will be one of the biggest autobiography deals in recent memory as Oprah Winfrey is headed toward an eight-figure payday to write her remarkable life story. We cannot wait for the book to be released.

The Count Your Blessing Rule

The CYB ‘Count Your Blessing’ Rule

One day in the shower (which is coincidentally where a number of my thoughts occur), I distinctly heard the words ‘Count your blessings’. Being the special chorister that I am (not), I burst into singing ‘Count your blessings, name them one by one’. Then I heard the voice again ‘No Toun, COUNT your blessings’. And then it hit me and I proceeded to do just that. I named all blessings I could remember from the start of the year – for me, my husband, my son, my family, my friends, my businesses, my gifts/talents, my ideas, everything.

family

Whilst I was speaking, I became overwhelmed and started crying. I was vulnerable and my heart was sensitive again. I forgot about me. I forgot about my never- ending needs. I forgot about unanswered prayers. At that point, God had me exactly where He wanted me to be with just a simple statement. I was only glad that for once, I was able to hear and immediately obey.

Usually, I tend to be grateful only when specific things happen, taking for granted the many things God was working on behind the scenes of my life. And if things didn’t go as planned (by me), I would fuss and react either by pitying myself or by trying to ‘help’ God speed up the process of things. Both actions never helped me feel better in the long run and I always ended up looking back with regret over my response.

Now I try to use the rule as many times as I remember to get me out of any terrible feelings of heaviness, despair, dissatisfaction, hopelessness, unanswered prayers, waiting, you name it. The alternative is to stay in a place of constant gratitude, appreciation, brokenness and ‘flowers’. I know which of them I’d prefer. Which would you? A line from a Yoruba song ‘O sore mele gbagbe o Baba’ – meaning ‘You’ve done things I can’t/wouldn’t forget Father’

So let us remember to always pause and always count your blessing.

More Tips For Raising Polite Children

0
0

In an earlier post we talked about the issue of more and more children who do not seem to have manners and are not polite. They seem to leave adults asking “where are your manner”. Here are more tips for raising polite children.

ink-drip-alphabet_MkBTPCUd_L

6. Responsible:

Thinking Teach your child to be responsible for their actions and to be mindful of the decisions they make. The act of right or wrong in a skill, which takes discipline. With the right foundation and a strong idea of what is acceptable at home and what is not. Hopefully your child will desist from being easily influenced or cajoled into doing what they would not normally do.

7. Shake off Laziness:

There is nothing wrong with domestic help at home to assist you with your children and the welfare of your home. It becomes a problem when your child is completely dependent and reliant on that person, such that they cultivate a lackadaisical attitude to life in general. Avoid situations where a poorly kept room is condoned because the housekeeper will take care of it. Clothes on the floor, wet towels scattered, socks and shoes in disarray is a sign of laziness that can grow out of control. Assign periodical chores that must be performed to instil discipline and proper acts of behaviour.

8. Table Manners:

Teach your child proper conduct at the table. Basic skills include (a) Sitting Position (b) Use of cutlery (c) Eating composure (d) Conversation skills (e) Being nice at the table. There are dining etiquette skills that professionals can teach your child. These traits bring out the true polish of a child. It has been said that the best place to see the level of panache is by the way they dine. Let your child not be found wanting.

9. Niceness & Politeness:

The Golden rule is to treat others the way you want to be treated. Teach your children to be their brother’s keeper. Starting with their siblings the act of being nice is a must. It is about feeling free to share toys, information, knowledge and possessions when need be. Being nice to siblings grows into being nice to friends, colleagues, teachers, family members and parents. Stop all attitude that protrude selfishness, greediness, pride or offensiveness. Do not accept growing negativity, as this is the beginning of personality and character identification. Your child must make that effort to go out their way to be nice and polite. Gracious women and men today think of others as they think of themselves. They stand out from the crowd.

10.Bullying Traits:

Bullying tendencies start from insecurity and negative self-talk. It can also emanate from bad gossiping behind someone’s back. Teach your child to be content with what they have now and promote their potential to be great in life. The tenacity and drive to succeed should be exhibited in you first; your child will emulate you.

Top 10 Christmas HomeMade Gifts Your Children Can Make

0

Christmas usually comes with giving gifts to family and friends, giving gifts does not always have to cost a lot of money. We are sharing top 10 christmas homemade gifts your children can make and give to their grandparents, friends, parents, teachers, neighbours, the less privileged there is something for everyone. Some of the best gifts are the ones that were thoughtfully made – it really is the thought that counts. Imagine grandma’s face when she gets a home made gift from Junior – it will mean so much more than another 5 yards of lace for a change. It also helps to teach children to be resourceful, creative and will keep them busy while on vacation.

1. Home-made Christmas cards – Home made cards designed with a personal touch, there is no way this can go wrong. All they need to make these are cardboard, glue, glitter, crayons and their creativity. These work for everyone including parents, teachers, grandmas, friends etc.

Homemade Card

2. Make a piece of art and craft – For some inspiration they can write Merry Christmas “Grandma”, cut out some Ankara print and use to decorate their artwork or they can draw their hands on a piece of paper, cut out the shapes and decorate.

Coping with the pressure of Christmas

Coping with the pressure of Christmas

Most Nigeria families have been badly affected by the economic downturn. Debo Peters has recently been laid off by his employer, an oil service company that was forced to shed sixty percent of its work force. He is the primary breadwinner; his wife Anne works part time as a support teacher. The family now faces the prospect of having to withdraw their three children from an expensive private school for a more affordable option. Christmas for the Peters was a fan fair with shopping, fun and travel. Things seem so different now.

Do we put ourselves under far too much financial pressure at Christmas? Whether you look forward with excitement to the preparations or with some anxiety at the stress, and drain on already stretched resources, here are a few tips to help you cope.

Put a Christmas budget in place

You cannot afford to buy gifts for all your loved ones? The reality is that funds are limited whilst the extended family isn’t. Put a spending limit in place; it will help you determine exactly how much you can afford to spend on all the Christmas trappings; gifts, decorations, food and drink, clothes, entertainment, phone calls, charitable donations and travel. If the total is more than you can afford, trim it. Some bulk food staples can be shared with friends and family to manage costs.

Merry Christmas

Make a gift list

Make a list of friends and family for whom you wish to or feel obliged to purchase gifts and how much you can afford to spend on each person. Some names will have to be dropped; don’t worry they are probably dropping you as well! Remember those who have been particularly helpful through the year.

Before you go out to buy anything, rifle through your cupboards; you will find gifts from birthdays and Christmases past that remain unopened. These can make ideal gifts. Do keep a list of who gave you what, to avoid the embarrassment of giving back to Uncle Celestine the same basket of plastic fruit that he gave you!

It’s the thought that counts

A thoughtful inexpensive gift, something that demonstrates love and care, is of great value. Gifts of sentimental value, such as framed photographs, a potted plant, or a special book, aren’t that expensive. It is also a way of teaching your children by example that thoughtfulness is more important than price. Encourage them to use their talents to create handmade gifts for loved ones who will treasure them.

Christmas Bonus

If you are fortunate enough to receive a Christmas bonus or 13th month salary this year, seize this opportunity to build some savings. Indulge yourself a little and invest the balance in something that will contribute to your long-term financial security. Reduce your debt, particularly high interest debt, put some money in your emergency fund and consider taking advantage of stock market prices to invest for the long term.

Financial gifts

The gift of stock or a lump sum mutual fund investment managed by a reputable fund manager is a thoughtful financial gift to a young child and could be the start of a rewarding long-term savings plan that lasts long after toys have been discarded. A mutual fund is a professionally managed fund that pools money from several investors to invest in securities including stocks, bonds and money market instruments. You can invest in a mutual fund for as little as N5,000.

Give of your time and skills

Consider sharing some of your time. Perhaps you have a skill or some knowledge that others might value? For example, you could offer to teach someone how to improve their social media knowledge or give the gift of a few free lessons in your area of competence, such as piano lessons, cooking, coaching etc. Visit a loved one that you haven’t seen in months, make that telephone call, send a handwritten note of appreciation to someone, help with ideas on a project that a friend is working on. In our frenetic world, our time is precious, so this makes such gifts special.

Make a difference

You don’t have to look too far to bring a smile to the face of someone who is having a harder time than you have had. What issue tugs at your heart? Can you be proactive and do something about it in the run up to Christmas and beyond. Give some thought about the way you give; will it be one off, or something more far reaching that has a long term social impact. Be mindful of where you channel your resources to ensure that it is handled by only credible organisations.

Hope Note Showing Wishes Wants And Hope

Many Nigerian families will still be paying for their Christmas indulgencies well into 2016 when the serious expenses such as school fees come into the fore. Don’t balk under the pressure. In the midst of all the fan fare and activity find a moment to stop and reflect on the true essence of Christmas. May God’s gift of his son Jesus give you joy and peace this season and beyond.

Merry Christmas!
