Tips to My Younger Self

$

You have heard the saying that “Hindsight is 20:20” meaning that when you look back on your life, on past experiences you are able to see the situation much clearer. The things that seemed so muddled or used to make you anxious start seem to make sense now. Failure is feedback as you would have made mistakes along the way that you learnt from.

Life as a teacher means that you are able to advise other people because you have been there and done that, you have walked that path before. Perhaps you are more discerning and able to see trouble looming ahead so are able to help someone avoid going down that painful path. Some mistakes have already been made so that others do not have to repeat the same mistakes. Life is like a jigsaw puzzle that you sometimes piece together backwards.

So we have decided to share some letters that a few courageous women have written to their younger selves and agreed to share with LagosMums. Have you ever thought about what you would say to your younger self if you had the chance? Well now you do. Enjoy the letter below.

God Has Gifts For You

God has gifts for every single person. The question is whether or not you are aware of what gifts has in store for you. In John 4:10, Jesus said “If you only knew the gift God has for you”. So what would you do if you understood all the gifts that God has for you.

God has gifts for you through every season. Every season has its needs and God will always equip those who seek him earnestly with what each person needs.

To achieve what you need to, you have to say and see things from the perspective of God. You cannot afford to see things from what is going on according to the World’s view or to be discouraged. To have prophetic activation you have to speak according to God’s word and according to God’s plan for you. Prophetic activation lets you know that in the midst of everything God has set you apart.

prophetic headlines

Speak it – The Power of Words

You have to speak what you want to happen. You have to voice the things The Lord has spoken onto you.

When the disciples were in the boat even as Jesus was there, the storm raged. This means that even while you are flourishing it does not mean that there will not be issues, it does not mean that different challenges will not come. What we are reminded of is that through it all you have to speak God’s word into every situation. When Jesus calmed the wind it settled down so you must speak, If you do not speak situations will not change. You have to speak to the mountain to move it, the smallest amount of faith can change situations.  To change things in the atmosphere you have to speak (Matthew 17:20)

Speak to your morning. When you wake up, speak to the day declare that today goodness and mercy must follow me. Get into the habit of speaking into all the things you are going to do. As you go to a business meeting say you will have favour.

Teach your mouth to say what God says not what the circumstances around you say. Everything answers to the word of God. The elements, your body, circumstances, everything. Understand that you are more than a conqueror, you are bold, you are an overcomer and so you are victorious.

Give Gods word back to him when you have to level that mountain before you. Whatever is not of God you pull down, then you build by the words of God. What has God said? activate it with your mouth. The only thing the enemies hear is the word. The Lord says “only by the word of God”. The enemy does not hear the tears or the weeping but will retreat from the word of God. When you face the enemy and say “God says” the enemy retreats when he knows you know what you are saying. (Jeremiah 1:8-10)

Jabez asked God to change his situation. If he did not speak nothing would have happened. Peter only stopped sinking when he walked on water after he called out to Jesus. You can either keep sinking or speak God’s word to be saved. Ezekiel spoke to the dry desolate bones and they came back to life.

You cannot afford to be quiet. Speak the right things. To speak the right things. You must know the word and speak the word.

You cannot afford to be quiet. Speak the right things.

God is saying that as you speak and declare he will bring to pass all the things he wants to. (Jer 33:3)

What authority do you have? What right do you have to flourish? Because The Lord says so. The earth is meant to yield fruit to you. Everything hears the word of God. The angels in heaven are receiving the things you say into a bowl, mix it with fire and God releases it back onto earth.

Remember the joy of The Lord is your strength. #SpeakIt #SayIt

The Woman A Man Needs

I was privileged to be at a Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference recently and it was quite encouraging to see several women come out to do their thing! I was really excited to see women pitch to investors on the spur of the moment and they came off really strong and determined to make an impression. There are some hard working and daring women out there I must confess and I am really proud of them. I am happy to be a woman!

www.centrax.co.za

www.centrax.co.za

Nonetheless, there are still millions of women out there who don’t see the need to bring anything to the table! They desire wealth and status without the demands of long hours in the workplace. Many on the other hand, hope to marry wealthy partners. A new survey has revealed that generations of young women are rejecting high-flying careers in favor of a life of ease and luxury. The so-called ‘Easy Life Generation’ has seen their mothers struggle with demanding jobs while trying to raise families and have no desire to follow in their footsteps. They certainly don’t have any intention of doing housework or even actually loving a husband; he is meant to be their ATM (Any Time Money) machine to fund their lavish lifestyle in return for occasional sex. That’s not being a traditional woman…you know what it is!

They come into marriage with very few assets yet they spend the little money that come their way on excessive luxuries to impress their friends and this can include things like designer apparels, upscale restaurants, frequent vacations, exotic cars, spa treatments and excessive amounts of clothing, purses, shoes and accessories. And when they run into trouble, their husbands pick up the slack and fix the mess they have made of their finances.

Money

In these days of equal education, opportunities and access to professions, women are still humiliating themselves by expecting everything from their husbands without making an effort to lift a finger! “My husband can take care of me”…they often pride. Congratulations! Then perhaps you should consider taking care of the world around you! What on earth is wrong with earning your own living and standing on your own two feet? Why have christened yourself ‘Obiageli’ (I came to eat) when you can very well be ‘Kolawole” (I brought Wealth home).

This kind of women shield behind several excuses not to work and some of the most audible reasons are:

“I’m busy keeping the Home front!”
Laundry, dish washing, vacuuming, cooking and cleaning all do not add up to 7 hours a day! Besides many women work and still do all of these…they don’t have two heads and four hands! The lie that housework is hard, time-consuming drudgery is no longer as persuasive as it may have been in the past because these days not every stay-at-home-wife even performs all of these duties. They have all sorts of domestic staff handling different duties.

“I just don’t feel like it!”

Women kind of like to feel a lot that they often forget to think…which is the real deal. In reality it’s not so much about how you feel but what it ought to be! And remember, Mrs. “I don’t feel like it” never owned a Ferrari or an Island…bought with her money!

“There are no jobs anywhere”
Where have you been searching? On the Television? In the salon or spa? At parties? Have you sent out your CVs? To how many people? If you can’t find a job, how about learning a skill and starting a business?

“It’s not in our culture for women to work”

But it is in your culture for women to eat??? Even Ants work…so says the Good Book. Talk more of a human being that God has invested a lot more artistry and intelligence!

“It doesn’t make sense for me to work”

How much are they going to pay me sef??? It’s not worth the trouble for me jare! This may be true, but does it make sense for you to spend your whole time glued to the TV, sitting around all day chatting on the phone or ‘catching up with her friends’ while your husband toils away? Rather than strolling through the mall, going to the movies every afternoon and window-shopping, it would be better to pick up a career or a skill regardless…as long as the outcome is some income, you will overcome!

Many women are carried away by highly polished stories of fake images of people sold to them via TV series, soaps and movies that don’t exist in real life. While you sit back everyday and recount reasons why you cannot do anything with your life, look around you and you will find several women in similar or sometimes worse situation than yours grinding real hard! So, stop being a delicate flower crying about life’s unfairness or who has it easier. Start re-writing your mental DNA. Drop negative habits of the “Easy Life Generation”:

Drop negative habits of the “Easy Life Generation”
Click To Tweet

  1. They are always on the phone for leisure and gossip, never for business!
  2. Their homes are always unkempt.
  3. Their favourite thing is doing nothing – too lazy even to read a magazine except those you only need to look at the pictures!
  4. They can’t cook.
  5. They are forever partying. And I wonder “they are not where they ought to be in life yet, so what exactly are they celebrating all the time?”
  6. They watch way too much TV.
  7. They gossip a lot – Those who cant often talk about those who can!

lipstick

But guess what? There isn’t even good news coming from the men’s quarters either because they have so replaced such women who pride themselves with traditional roles in the home by inventing the Washing Machine, Microwave oven, electric stove, refrigerator, sandwich maker, modern plumbing/electricity and most of the things we have at home that has now made the traditional housewife obsolete. The men have liberated themselves…they have made life easier for themselves!

Arise my fellow women! This is a call to inspire women with the courage to break free from the chains of limiting belief patterns and societal or religious conditioning that have traditionally kept women suppressed and unable to see their true beauty and power. There is nothing sexier than a woman who hustles! Being a woman is not only about fly outfits with heels higher than your IQ…No! A real woman must think like a man, act like a lady, look like a baby and work like a Horse! Get up and work, please. Don’t just exist…start living…don’t be a woman that needs a man…be the woman a man needs!

LagosMums Feature in Punch

The Founder, LagosMums.com, Mrs. Yetty Williams, speaks about her business of providing good parenting information for mothers in this interview with IFE ADEDAPO, Punch Newspaper – February 15th 2016. Original interview posted in Punch

What unique offerings does LagosMums provide to users?

LagosMums is a resource for mums on parenting and raising children in the 21st Century.

LagosMums is the first Nigerian parenting website dedicated to parenting. LagosMums is a one- stop destination for a parent in Lagos and Nigeria on raising children. We have also evolved to holding physical events where parents and experts in different areas come together to talk about different parenting topics. LagosMums was born out of a need to have a community for mothers and parents to get useful information and ask questions on raising children.

When I had children, I had a lot of questions and found that there was very little support and no central place online for a mum to get information on parenting applicable to me as a parent in Lagos. I had questions about domestic staff, finding the right school, dealing with Lagos work- life balance issues and more. It takes a village to raise a child and I say it takes an e-village nowadays.

Yetty Williams

What business opportunities are created through the parenting website?

The business opportunities that have opened up are numerous. On one end, we have companies and brands that have products targeting mums and families and they therefore look to the LagosMums platform as a way to reach them.

On the other hand, we have mothers who have come to trust LagosMums for recommendations for everything from the best bank account for their children to the preferable brand of diapers.

How did you start LagosMums?

I am a very inquisitive person and a Google warrior; so when I started having children I was always researching on parenting. That was when I noticed there was no parenting resource with content that spoke to me as a parent in Lagos. While there were many foreign sites that catered to their needs there, there was none that spoke to my peculiar needs as a mum and parent in Lagos or Nigeria. I decided to then create the first blog that was dedicated to parenting as a one-stop shop for Lagos mothers on everything from immunisation schedules to finding schools and hiring and keeping domestic staff. It has also evolved to be a resource for product reviews and recommendations.

What was your initial investment?

I started with seed money from my ever-supportive husband. I started with the idea, found a website developer and we did it. Ever since I started, God has been opening doors of opportunity.

What has been your most memorable moment as the founder of LagosMums?

Everytime I meet someone who said LagosMums helped them with something they were struggling with as a parent, I feel fulfilled. Many mums and parents reach out to us for information or advice when it comes to parenting and we work hard to provide the answers they are seeking. My goal is for LagosMums to be the top destination for a mum or parent looking for information that is relevant to them as a parent both in Lagos and wider. My children tell me not to say “I don’t know” they always say “mummy just Google it” I guess I know where they got that from – this makes me smile.

LagosMums event

LagosMums Attendees at recent event

What impact has it had on mothers?

Mothers feel that they have a resource that helps them navigate parenting. We offer various types of assistance – through our online content, and our physical events which have been a huge success because mums and dads get an opportunity to meet each other and discuss their parenting needs in a comfortable setting with experts. Our recent event was held in December 2015 and was full house with various speakers discussing how to balance it all.

What is your educational background?

I completed my primary education at Corona Nursery and Corona Primary School, Ikoyi. I completed my secondary school at Queens College, Yaba. I then went on to the University of Pittsburgh, in the United States for my undergraduate studies where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a minor in Mathematics. Following this, I graduated with an MBA with a focus on strategy and finance from the Yale School of Management.

Children on Destiny

Children on Destiny – Diary of LagosMums

I believe in having real conversations with young people especially my children. Children are forming their views on the world on a daily basis and through seemingly unimportant questions they are constantly framing their views. When a child asks a question it is a natural and perfect window for parents and any well meaning adult who had the privilege of hearing the question to correctly frame their views.

The conversation on Destiny was not something I planned and scheduled (as most conversations as a parent are – unplanned). It started with my daughter asking “Mum what does destiny mean?” I had a split second to get a response that would make sense to a 6 and 8 year old.

destiny

I answered by saying that destiny is what you have been placed on earth for and to achieve. God has a plan for everyone whom he created and that God knew everyone even from the womb. To make it practical I told them that every gift and talent each of them has is not a mistake, it is all part of the bigger plan to achieve each person’s destiny.

You gifts and talents are not a mistake
Click To Tweet

I encouraged them to work on their unique gifts and talents because it is not a mistake. To give them real examples I went further to explain that if you like to write for example, you might one day write books. I told them that if they like to watch cartoons maybe one day they can create their own cartoon. This sparked an interest and my son said “Oh it’s like me since I like watching TV maybe I can fix cable?” I stretched him and said maybe he can own his own TV channel. He was like “yeah…or I can even make my own Tom and Jerry where they will do different things”.

His sister, every practical, said “but you should not only modify people’s things you can create your own”. This went on for a little bit with them discussing the concept of creating and harnessing their gifts and talents.

I believe the lesson on using your gifts and talents to achieve your destiny was well understood.

It got me thinking about how we approach each day, do we understand that every gift and talent is truly a gift unique to each and everyone towards achieving destiny. As parents one of our primary goals is to help our children achieve their destiny by exploring their unique gifts and talents.

You know the saying “black don’t crack”? It’s definitely true! Sometimes we can’t tell the difference between a mum and her daughter till we take a closer look. One mega gift we have is that we age with grace and effortless beauty.

Fancy a mother daughter hangout this weekend? You could try wearing the same colours and play a little game of “guess who the mum is”. Here are some mother daughter looks that inspire!

A LagosMums Story Jumoke Orisaguna: Hardwork and God’s Timing

$

Who would have thought a photobomb could land one a modelling contract? Jumoke’s story is a clear example of how the race is not to the swiftest, God’s timing is always perfect. Jumoke was an Agege Bread seller, her profit she recalls was about 300-500 Naira a day, a price many would agree could barely be enough to feed a family for one day but Jumoke did not see it as working in vain, she kept up her hustle and suddenly her minimal income has multiplied a thousand fold!

jumoke agege bread seller

@tybello

“Agege breeeeead!” Jumoke probably screamed while she walked the path that ended up making her famous. She would have walked that way everyday and would probably have had times where she was praying to sell at least one loaf of bread. She would have had disappointments a few times and would have probably been weighed down by the minimal return she gets for all that hard work. Carrying a child on your back in a living room can make one weary at times so imagine the days she might have had to carry her 14 month old for miles with the extra weight of the bread on her head.

All these and many more trials were enough for her to give up but this mother surely believed that one day things will be better so she continued to struggle on and slowly but surely that “one day” came!

Chance

TY Bello, a popular photographer happened to be taking pictures of a famous UK rapper Tinie Tempah in the area one day. Jumoke as usual was passing by through her Agege bread route and accidentally ended up in the artist’s picture. At first there was confusion as to whether she should wait or quickly pass by till TY Bello asked if she could take her picture. Jumoke probably agreed shyly, not fully understanding what was going on or knowing who the celebrity was. After the picture she went on her way. Her moment came later that day while TY Bello was looking through her archives, she saw how Jumoke photographed so well and noticed her delicate, model like frame. TYBello posted the experience on social media and put this up:

@tybello

@tybello

A few days later a mallam brought her to TY Bello’s studio and that began Jumoke’s rise to stardom. In a flash she was featured on ThisDay Style, got a modelling contract and has become the brand ambassador for Payporte and Stanbic IBTC. Stanbic IBTC has gone ahead to offer her children the gift of education, the gift of a lifetime. Within a space of two weeks Jumoke has become the talk of the Country and a Global sensation. CNN, YahOO, The Independent, Huffington Post and other major media outlets have featured her story as it is trending on numerous social media platforms. Her remarkable tale has given hope to those on a daily struggle and has also encouraged those who can help to support those in need.

“My friends have told me they saw me on the TV and they are really happy. My parents cannot believe their own child can become such a success. They are all so happy.”

The mother of two recalled on woman.ng how she attempted hairdressing back in Osun state where she lived. She did not have enough money to continue the business so was advised by a relative to come to Lagos. Although this was not her passion, Jumoke used the same zeal to make sure she sold fresh bread constantly and this has now led her to her new life. She has been given an internship at the prestigous Make me salon and landed another internship at a high brow salon on the Island. She has secured a scholarship for herself at Poise Graduate Finishing Academy, education for her children to university level and a luxurious apartment sponsored by Sujimoto Construction Ltd.

As a hardworking mum and wife she kept doing what she could selling her Agege bread and all her dreams and more have come true. We pray for her to excel during this new season and that she will be surrounded by wise counsel and people to guide her on the right path.

Baby Preparation Strategies

www.womenhealthcaretopics.com

www.womenhealthcaretopics.com

The period between conception and child birth is a very critical period. Necessary planning is needed to make this experience worthwhile. Most first time mums are at sea when it comes to issues on how to prepare for their incoming babies, most especially when they don’t have anyone with pre and post pregnancy experience around them. Here are a few tips that can help you plan ahead towards the coming of your unborn child.

Prepare The Baby Nursery

baby preparation

www.nursery.cstonepub.com

Set up the crib, wash the sheets, and put any finishing touches on the room décor. Depending on your taste you can keep it simple but extremely unique. Baby unique colours are an added advantage here depending on the sex of the child involved. At this point you could call in a home decorator or just decorate the room yourself. Make sure the nursery is highly baby friendly and all tentatively harmful objects are done away with.

Stock the Baby cupboard and diaper changing table

baby preparation

www.kitchenfurnitureau.blogspot.com

With the different varieties of baby wears and items available for your baby, you can never have too much of baby things around you. It’s also good idea to have several different sizes and brands of diapers on hand since you won’t be sure of your baby’s size until he/she arrives. Plus, you may find that certain brands fit better or are more absorbent. Don’t forget other necessities like baby wipes, cotton balls, and washcloths.

Wash Baby’s clothes

baby preparation

www.cleanipedia.com

All the baby clothes that have been bought in preparation of the unborn child should be washed now. Use a gentle detergent that is free of perfumes and dyes to wash your newborn’s clothes before she wears them. This helps to remove any irritating chemicals used during manufacturing. You can later switch to regular detergent and include your baby’s clothes in the family wash as long as he/she doesn’t have sensitive skin.

Get ready for guests

baby preparation

www.grandparents.about.com

You know the your mother, mother in law and other family concerned family members are coming to visit (obviously because of the post pregnancy care you will receive). Now is the time to wash the sheets for the guest bed and make some room in the closet and dresser for grandma’s things. At this point a general clean up is needed to make your would be guest very very comfortable.

Install the car seat

baby preparation

www.auto.howstuffworks.com

For mums who have a car and  will be driving themselves about or won’t be in the position to carry their babies when they are in the car, a baby car seat is best for this.Have a professional child car seat technician inspect the car seat to ensure proper installation. Most times accidents occur when baby car seats are not properly fixed into the car seats.

Fill in the baby book blanks

baby preparation

www.pintrest.com

Get a head-start on the baby book by completing the family tree section or writing a letter to your baby about your pregnancy experience or your dreams for her. Take pictures and also videos of the various stages of the pregnancy. This way when your baby is older he/she can know what you experienced when they were in your tummy.

Get your other kids involved in the whole pregnancy issue too

baby preparation

www.bedrestconcierge.net

Their is a tendency for children to feel neglected when their parents are about to have another child. This period would be the best to foster a strong sibling relationship between the children. Activities like asking the child to talk to the baby in your stomach, feeling and listening to the baby movements in the stomach at various phases of the pregnancy would go a long way to form interpersonal relationships with the child and his/her younger ones.

The event took place at the newly opened minibees bakery in Lekki, which gave the welcoming aroma of freshly baked treats for the family.

Each child chose from a variety of canvases with an outline to paint on.

How To Live Abundantly

$

When you ask people how they are doing? the answers can and do vary. The answer you get to such a question can differ based on the day of the week, a Friday evening versus a Monday morning which typically goes with the Monday morning blues. Now ask a mum this question and you get a variety of responses but some of the common ones will be

  • Fatigued
  • Feeling unfulfilled in some way or the other
  • Struggling with raising children
  • Struggle between work life balance

The answers vary but it is a very small percentage of people will answer with a spring in their step, who answer the question of “how are you doing” with positivity and radiating with joy and satisfaction. Very understandably people are just trying to get by and are dealing with all the demands of parenthood, motherhood, marriage, work demands, weight challenges and lack of time.

So when you say Abundant Living series you must wonder what this is all about? There are a few people who understand what it means to live an abundant life. To achieve this there has to be the sense that you are living out your true purpose and that you are harnessing your real gifts and talents.

While we might know this, very few people truly know how to achieve this state nor know how to drill down to find their unique gift and talents before attempting to live a life that harnesses these gifts and talents. When people are living from inside out, life is a joy and the future is a series of steps towards a clear goal.

Women most especially run through life almost on an expected pathway – go through school, get married take on a new identity, have children and become a mum (no one can ever prepare you for this). Many women look back after 5 or 10 years of back to back mothering and are either happy or still feel unfulfilled even after having attained MRS status, might have a job or run a business.

“An Abundant life refers to life in its abounding fullness of joy, strength for the mind, body, and soul”.

The first step and the most critical step in living an abundant life and managing all the many different realities of a mum is knowing yourself, finding your purpose and understanding that you can and should strive to be all that you can be.

Many times we are told we should live a life of purpose, but it is not followed “by the how”. This is why LagosMums has put together an Abundant Living Series to encourage all women and especially mums who feel that they need to find themselves.

Mum and Daughter Bonding

$

One of life’s most powerful gifts to the world is the mother-daughter relationship.  It is a double dose of nurturing and friendship which if done in the right manner can blossom into an everlasting connection. Coupled with open communication and caring counselling, taking out time to engage in activities with your daughter is the best way to get to know her and foster a motherly friendship with her. Here are a few things you can do together.

Try Something You both like

What are your common interests? determine what you both enjoy to do or agree on trying something new together. You could plan a hangout day where you go to see a new  movie, take a bike ride or cook a meal you haven’t cooked before together. This way you enjoy the company of your daughter, keep fit and learn new things all at the same time. It is also an avenue to get to know each other better which will help to tighten your bond.

mum and daughter

www.cdn3gurl.com

Go for a Beauty Treatment

Another way to take off time is to go to the spa and beauty parlour together. This way you  get to catch up on the latest gist with your daughter as well as pamper yourself. It is a double winner of bonding and treating your body to some TLC (tender loving care) so get your hair done, fix your nails and simply relax with the comfort of your daughter beside you.

mum and daughter

www.informationng.com

Pray Together

Every mum who intends to build a strong mum-daughter relationship can only achieve this in the corridor of prayers. As we all know, there are times our human strength will fail but God is constant and He is always the best solution for every kind of situation. Doing it on your own without God is like hitting a brick wall but with God on your side, it is like using a bulldozer to bring down the walls. Prayer is key in every aspect of your relationship with your daughter but most especially at the adolescent stage. This is usually the most difficult time to get through to her but if you encourage praying together, there is no gap God cannot bridge.

mum and daughter

www.pintrest.com

Exercise Together

Even if you are the very busy working mum, you can try to take out at least a few mins for bonding time and this can be done through exercise. Go to the gym, jog, run, swim or do exercise at home together. It may be a little hard to keep up with your daughter’s energy but it can still be fun and a great way to teach her about the importance of exercise. The exercise routines could be spiced up with things that will interest her like listening to music as you work out or using an app to record your progress. This would make her feel loved and she would definitely appreciate the sacrifice.

mum and daughter

www.romancemeetslife.com

Read Together

It is very important to foster a reading culture so this can be an activity to do with your daughter. Look for a book that will appeal to both of you and take out the time to read to her or preferably she could read it to you.  At the early stages, this could be a good bonding strategy because it would help you know more about your daughter’s strength or weaknesses in the area of literacy. This way you can gently and gradually guide her to love to read on her own.

mum and daughter

www.s.hswstatic.com

Have Fun Together

Let yourself go at this point, set yourself free. Let go of the rigid mum structure you sometimes put up. Feel free to be fun and have fun, come down to the level of your daughter. This would help you relate with her from her own view point. Play a game of hide and seek, chess, scrabble, monopoly, wii, the list is endless. You could even ask your daughter to initiate a game herself as she would be in a better position to talk about current games of her time. Goof a little and let her teach you some slangs, use it sometimes to break the ice. Though she might make fun of you when you pronounce them wrongly but you will be sure to have a laugh and she will be happy you are making an effort to be close to her.

mum and daughter

www.totallifecounselling.com

Look Cute Together

Take out time to wear matching clothes and go for outings together. You could plan your own twin asoebi for parties, get togethers or even shopping. This helps to form a positive reinforcement in the mindset of your daughter and she would appreciate the fact that her mother likes to be identified with her.

mum and daughter

www.pintrest.com

Go out together

Pick an outing you would like to go together. It could be to the beach, go karting or just a stop at the ice cream parlour. Make sure you look good so she would be proud to be seen with you in public and even be eager to introduce you to friends she might meet there.

Guess who the mum is

Guess who the mum is

Building a strong lasting relationship with your daughter takes a lot of work and patience especially in her growing up years. Once you put in time and effort to bond with her, it will reinforce her confidence and commitment to your relationship on a continuous basis. Through your guidance you would help her be the best person she can be.

10 Money Tips for Single Mums

10 Money Tips for Single Mums

The current economic climate presents enormous challenges for most families; for the single mum there is an additional strain on an already stretched budget. In Nigeria, single mothers often face unique challenges with alimony and child support often not enforced following a fractured relationship, and an often unsympathetic or even hostile extended family following the demise of a spouse or partner. Financial security is of topmost concern particularly where the women has been a home maker and not earning at all; indeed, many single mums worry about how they will manage on one income, and how to ensure that should anything happen to them, their children will be taken care of. If you are a single mum, here are 10 tips for you to consider:

personal resolution

  1. Do you have clear goals in place?

With all the decision-making lying at your feet you do need to have clear short, medium and long-term financial goals. Short-term might be to pay off some of your debts, build up some emergency savings. Medium and long-term goals may include buying a home for yourself and the children, investing for their education and your retirement.

  1. Assess where you stand financially

You may have received a large sum of money from a divorce settlement or a death benefit, retirement or inheritance. Don’t make any hasty decisions about the money; place it for the short term, say 90 days whilst you seek professional advice to determine the next steps.

Budgeting takes on a new meaning, where there is only one income to support a family. It is a tested tool that keeps one in control of your finances if you stick to it. Your priorities are likely to include your mortgage or rent, school fees, utility bills, food, clothing, childcare, vehicle expenses, insurance and of course, savings. Can you cut back at all? Look at your utility bills for example; is there any way you can reduce them? Are you able to reduce your debt? Paying close attention to how you spend over a month or two will help you to plan systematically towards your financial goals.

  1. Do you have an Emergency Fund?

Without a second income to fall back on, many single mothers can be quite vulnerable in an emergency. Whilst support from the extended family and friends is welcome, it is advisable not to rely upon it totally as they might have challenges as well. Children and aging parents fall ill, or there may be car or home repairs to worry about; it is impossible to predict such events. Automate your savings and set aside about six months of expenses in an interest bearing money market account in anticipation of this.

  1. Develop and nurture your skills and talents

Now is the time to leverage upon your natural gifts and talents if you have ignored them before now. With some attention, they could well provide very real income earning opportunities for you. Update and send your CV whilst you consider your options. If you have been a full-time home mum for several years, you are likely to be rusty, so consider enrolling on a course to improve your knowledge and prospects before you rush into anything.

  1. Where will you live?

One of your priorities should be to find a secure and affordable place to live. It can be tempting to try to maintain an expensive home that may have been funded by your ex or that relied upon two incomes to sustain it. Whilst your desire may be to live in a decent home in a safe environment, or keep your children in an expensive school, be sure that you can afford to live where you choose to live. Sometimes it is better to “downsize” for the short term, than to try to maintain standards at all costs. Don’t put yourself under unnecessary pressure; just stay focused on the big picture and not what the Joneses will say.

  1. Are you insured?

For a single parent, health, life, and education insurance are very important. If you are the primary breadwinner with dependents, it is your responsibility to try to build some financial cushion should you lose your job, become ill or disabled or in the worst case scenario, in the event of your untimely death. A life insurance policy will help to replace and protect your income and can help to prevent your children from becoming totally dependent on the charity of relations or friends. It can also provide legal guardians with the resources to take care of your children. An educational policy should ensure that your plans for their education are not derailed. Seek advice from a reputable insurance company who will help you to determine how much and what type of insurance coverage will best meet your needs and situation.

  1. Invest for the future

As a single mum, it may be difficult to save for both your retirement and other important goals such your children’s education, but you cannot afford to ignore your own retirement needs. The earlier you start saving for your retirement, the better. Open a Retirement Savings Accounts (“RSA”) with a Pension Fund Administrator (“PFA”) and fund it even if you are running your own business. By starting to plan and invest early, even a little amount put aside regularly over several years will grow over time into a significant sum. Some excellent stocks are currently selling well below their true value. Seek professional advice to see if it makes sense, given your risk profile and other commitments, for you to buy stocks directly through a stockbroker or through a mutual fund. This is a good opportunity to work towards your long-term goals.

  1. Do you have an Estate Plan?

An estate plan is important for everyone but even more important than ever for a single parent. Verbal instructions carry little weight; if you die intestate, that is, without a written will, everything involving your estate and your children will be decided by a probate court and might not be in accordance with your wishes. A will provides clear directions about who will inherit your assets including your property, bank accounts and investments, who will execute your affairs after your death as well as who will play a guardianship role for your children, in the event of your demise. Explore other estate planning tools including a living will or a trust.

Single Parent Household

  1. Avoid over-indulging your children

It is tempting to spoil your children; try not to balk under the pressure to provide for their every whim; this only leads to them to develop a sense of entitlement and brings even greater challenges with their upbringing and damages your finances. There is so much peer pressure in our materialistic society. If you are clearly focused on your goals, you will be less likely to be derailed by perceptions or what others are doing or what they will say.

It is your responsibility to provide them with their needs but not all their wants. As they get older, you can begin to involve them in discussions regarding family finances so they understand the family goals. As early as appropriate, encourage them to learn to earn their own money through holiday jobs and internships. It makes them more responsible and they get to understand the value of money.

  1. Have some fun

In the midst of all this, it is important to remember that it is not all about money. Consider some down time, quality time, the health and wellbeing of yourself and your family. Try to build in some fun into your plan so that you are better able to cope with stress and can have a better chance of remaining healthy and happy.

Whilst single parenthood often features as one of life’s major challenges, with discipline, careful planning and budgeting, one can emerge confident in one’s ability to provide a comfortable and secure lifestyle for your family.
