Raising Financially Literate Children – Take Part

0
0

Raising Financially literate children starts with you, today 14th March 2016 marks the start of Global Money Week with the theme  “Take Part: Save Smart”

GMW is a celebration, with local and regional events and activities aimed at inspiring children and youth to learn about money, saving, creating livelihoods, gaining employment, and becoming an entrepreneur through interactive and fun activities.

With money management not taught in schools, it is so important for parents and guardians to ensure that their children are equipped with at least the basic concepts of personal finance before they go out into the world. Sadly, most parents don’t deal with their children’s money issues until the children are adults. By then, any money problems tend to be both costly and emotionally charged as parents resent having to constantly bail their teenagers and young adults out of financial woes. Bad money habits once established are hard to shake off and can often last a lifetime.

Be a positive role model

Young children provide parents with the best opportunity to encourage good financial habits and avoid problems that may develop later in life in terms of money and relationships if this area is neglected. A research report from Cambridge University revealed that money habits are formed by the age of 7. This means that the earlier we start to introduce our children to the basic financial concepts, the better.

Fortunately there are several teachable money moments that can be introduced from home. Parents and guardians are the biggest influence and children will typically develop their attitudes and habits through the examples they see at home. They are more likely to be good savers if their parents set a good example. It is thus important to realize that our behavior will have a long lasting impact on our children’s money personalities, which affects how they spend, save, invest, borrow, and give.

Family chess concept

Create a budget

The best way to teach children to manage money is to give them some. Their allowance or pocket money is usually the introduction to money for many children. This provides parents with an opportunity to teach budgeting. Children should understand that they have a finite amount of money, which they need to manage in order to be able to afford the things that they want.

“Wants” versus “Needs”

Children should be taught to distinguish between wants and needs. If your child has been eyeing a new device or gadget, don’t just “help” them out by paying for everything that they want, as this sends the wrong signal. This is a good opportunity to have them compare costs and shop around for the best prices and then begin to set aside money towards the purchase, by foregoing other items. You can agree on a target amount that they should save themselves, after which you might consider matching the amount as appropriate; this will give them a sense of fulfillment as their “sacrifice” has brought about a direct benefit.

Learning to earn

Chores teach discipline and responsibility and should not necessarily be paid for. But if a child is particularly helpful in completing chores around the house, some parents might opt to tip them as a reward for the work done. Penalties and fines may also be imposed where work is neglected or done shabbily. Part time jobs and vacation jobs also give children a practical understanding of the effort and time that is needed to earn an income.

Some children display entrepreneurial skills very early. If your child is showing significant skill in a particular area, you might encourage them to start a small business. This is a great opportunity to teach them about money and also sows the seeds of entrepreneurship. Apart from earning income it will begins to instil a solid work ethic they will benefit from throughout their lives.

Budget concept

Play Monopoly

You can make the subject of money fun and engaging by using board games. The Monopoly board game is a great tool to teach children about the important concepts of Banking, Real Estate, Saving, Taxes, Budgeting and Personal Income. The great thing about board games is that not only are members of family spending precious quality time together, but they are also learning invaluable life lessons at the same time.

Utility Bills

There are many “invisible expenses” that children should be made aware of that do not involve physically handing over cash. They constantly request for your car to drop them at a friends’ house with no consideration for the cost of petrol, and they demand constant electricity without giving diesel costs a second thought. All these everyday actions such as using electricity or data usage will run up bills that they may ignore if you don’t point them out. Talk about money saving habits like turning of lights or air-conditioners when not in use; if they actually see the bills, these will become practical real life lessons that will help them to make better money-saving decisions.

Save regularly

As soon as children have access to money from pocket money, chores, vacation jobs, they can begin to save. They should try to save at least 10% of all their pocket money in a piggy bank; subsequently a savings account should be opened for them at a reputable bank. Birthday money and any other income they may have should be deposited.

A savings account with some restricted access will help to teach them the discipline of saving. Without regular withdrawals, they will quickly learn the concept of compound interest. As their balance grows, this will be an incentive to save more as they can see the direct benefit over time.

Understanding Debt

The “buy now, pay later” mentality is endemic and can plunge young adults into a cycle of debt if you don’t reinforce the idea that waiting pays. Debt becomes part of our lives at some time or other. The sooner your teenager understands the concept of debt, its advantages and its pitfalls, the better.

global money week

Making an impact

A valuable lesson about money is that giving is as important as receiving, Discuss with your children, a cause which they would like to support and make it possible for them to visit and understand what impact their donations of either money or some of their belongings will have.

We should take deliberate steps to teach our children to be as financially aware as possible by the time they leave home as this will help them to avoid some far reaching mistakes. Financially literate children have a much better chance of becoming financially independent adults and attaining future financial security.

Be part of GMW 2016 to help our children and youth to secure their financial futures. ‘Take Part. Save Smart!’

When Children Say “I Have Got The Wrong Parents”

0
0

Could anyone feel that they have the wrong parents? This article was initially seen from Tim Elmore who understands the younger generation and deals with a lot of their challenges. His book 12 Huge Mistakes Parents Can Avoid have been one of the best books on parenting I have personally read.

Is that a yes, no or maybe? So what would make children make that comment or feel that way enough to say “I have got the wrong parents?”

couple

A 23 year old after seeing his counsellor for eight sessions actually said in his own words, not his therapist’s description, that it was his conclusion that he thinks he has the wrong parents. Somehow, even though he was not adopted, he felt his personal temperament just did not match those of his mom and dad. Their personalities did not mesh with his and now he is attempting to overcome it.

While similar DNA exists inside parents and children, we live in an imperfect world of disease, insecurities, deformities and brokenness—and sometimes, the personalities of mom or dad and their daughter or son just clash. Parents can give birth to a child with a temperament that doesn’t fit their leadership style. It causes mom or dad to feel guilty, to over-compensate or to give up. Sadly, both children and adults become victims. At a loss for what to do, both can assume the guilt for being wrong. Usually, both the parent and offspring feel it, but neither knows how to talk about it.

The question then becomes

  • From a biological perspective, it begs the question: “How could a child with the same genes as her parents seem so foreign in her ways?”
  • From a sociological perspective, it begs the question: “How can kids growing up in the same environment turn out so differently?”

Three Suggestions to avoid falling into the trap of frustration where the parents feel they got the wrong kid, or the child feels so misunderstood that he or she feels they got the wrong parents.parents

  1. Play Chess Not Checkers

Parents raise children in the same household with very different outcomes, in one case a father has wondered if he failed with his daughters as adolescents and regrets not investing enough in them in their teen years—investing in them emotionally while his relationship with his son seemed near perfect. What does parenting have to do with chess? Kids are like chess pieces, not checkers pieces. The game of checkers is simple, because all the pieces look and move alike. In chess, however, to have any hope of winning the game, we must know what each piece can do and how each piece moves. So it is with leading children, every child is truly different. Growing up in the same home, the children might have similar traits but they are not all alike, and they must raised based on their personality and strengths. Learn to read your kid before you lead your kid.

  1. Be a Sun, Not a Moon

We all know the sun and moon both give us light, one during the day and one at night. The difference the moon only reflects the light of the sun while the sun is the source of light. I believe this is our responsibility as adult leaders and parents. We are to act, not react. We must be the source of light and leadership for our children and young people. Far too often, parents have led their children as if they were adults, giving them too many choices and options when they are still too young to make wise decisions. We must assume responsibility for the health and development of the relationship between a parent and a child and give the leadership and guidance as required.

Parents must set the example. We must model the way.

Gardener

  1. Be a Gardener, Not a god

We all know what a good gardener does and nurtures the plants by watering them, adding fertilizer, pulling weeds and ensuring the plants get adequate sunshine. Our job as parents entails that we emotionally nourish our students, remove harmful distractions and expose them to mentors who could be more in tune with them. We are to simply create a healthy environment. Healthy things naturally grow. We are a gardener—not a god. We can’t control our child’s attitudes or as young adults all of their actions. The “control myth” leads only to parental guilt and shame. Parenting is actually a dance, you and your children are dancing and both people must take steps to stay aligned and dance collaboratively. However, someone must take the lead and this is your role as a parent.

Why Mothers Need to Take More Photos

Why mothers need to take more photos of their baby.

Mothers are the cornerstones of a typical African home. This reality sees them wear different caps in different situations for the wellbeing of the family. They are the consultants, home-makers, alarm clocks, and in some cases even the bread winners of the family. We wouldn’t want to impose but we just need you to assume one more vital role… the biographer.

When we asked Mrs Lidae Aderoju, a young mother of cute baby Tani, why she loves taking photos of her baby girl she said:

“Naturally I love taking pictures, so taking frequent pictures of my baby helps me keep up with her monthly growth and observe the significant changes in her growth each month”.

baby photograph baby photos photographer3“More so, they grow up so fast so I try to savour every moment”, she also added cracking a smile.

Mothers are their child’s first and foremost photographer. It’s so important to document every little detail in your child’s first few years because they are all grown before you know it. From the first time she crawls, the first ‘mama’ to the first few steps, you need to preserve all these moments.

“In recent times, there are different electronic gadgets we can save our memorable pictures on. However, these gadgets can break or get lost at any point, so it’s the printed pictures I can always fall back on. Printed pictures last forever if kept properly. I still have hilarious childhood pictures my mom kept safely for me, when I look back at those classic moments I just smile”

Lidae wants to replicate this experience for her own child and give her more than enough pictures to smile about in a few years’ time.

Parents of today are really fortunate, we can take numerous pictures of our little ones everyday with our smartphones, but where can we conveniently put our favourite pictures and share them with family & friends who come over to visit.

It’s easy for great pictures to get lost in the camera roll or completely lost with a misplaced phone. This is why prints are still a good idea. MOMS ALWAYS KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR THE BABY

Nothing compares to a mother’s love. When it comes to their babies, moms are ‘ominiknowest’. They see everything, know everything and they do not hide the truth. They are always on the lookout for what is best for their babies; the well being of their babies comes first.

On the decision of what diaper to use for their babies, they are always super critical and when they finally go for one, they are unapologetically generous in sharing their experiences, good or bad. Inferior diapers that cause rashes on the baby bum as well as easily wet or leaking diapers are moms’ worse nightmare. So once they discover a superior diaper, they don’t keep quiet, they tell other moms.

Mrs. Sholanke is one of those moms and she is a Pampers Mom. After trying out the improved Pampers Baby-Dry, she shared her experience:

“To say I love Pampers Baby Dry for my baby is an understatement… I decided to switch to Pampers. Since then I believe there are no diapers that compare to Pampers baby dry when it comes to versatility and affordability, Pampers Baby dry deliver ultimate comfort to my baby. It’s highly absorbent and my baby has never had diaper rash ever since she started using Pampers baby dry.”

Another Pampers Mom, Mrs. Ugwuaji after using Pampers Baby-dry said that it is either Pampers or no other. In her words “I used other brand of diapers for my baby at birth, when I went to immunize her at the hospital, I received two pieces of pampers from pampers staff. I tried it; it was just the best, no rashes. Pampers is very easy to adjust with the help of the stretcher, it doesn’t cut, it is soft. With pampers baby-dry, no need to wake in the night and change my baby’s diaper. 1 pampers, 1 dry night. For me, its Pampers or no other”.

Millions of Nigerian moms trust only Pampers Baby Dry for their Babies. After all, moms always know what is best for the baby. Try the Nigeria Pampers now and share your experience on facebook.com/PampersAfrica/ using the hashtag #MomsKnowBest.

Invest Screen Showing Growing Stocks For Investor

The peculiarity of this season is one we must tap into. Sometimes in order to move forward, you need to learn from experiences of the past. The history of America shows that the men who rebuilt the economy during recessions harnessed the opportunities they found in the economic crisis of the period.

Nigeria is not different: in the economic crisis we face today in the country there is wealth to be created, you just need to know how.
There are key investment to be made that can guarantee a worthy increase. Amidst the many opportunities in the market, this month I will be looking at two key industries that can be exploited for wealth creation.

Real Estate

Yes I said real estate. In these tricky times where you think people do not have disposable income it’s actually a great time to invest in this sector, especially if you have a long term view and you’re not looking for quick returns. With the current drop in the prices of land and built property you could buy for long term investment which would appreciate and can be sold at a time when the economy is on an upswing and the market value would have risen. You could also invest in developed property that can yield returns in rent or lease income.

As much as these are tricky times for the real estate industry, if you have a plan and access the products properly you will be best positioned to make the best out of this industry. ‘How do I fund this property acquisition?’ I hear you ask. The easiest (though most expensive option) would be to get a mortgage from a bank. However, there are also established institutions created to aid property acquisitions at a cheaper rate – especially in partnerships with state governments who are looking to resolve housing issues by partnering with individuals.

These include Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company, Imperial Homes Mortgage Bank, etc. Contact them and tap into the many schemes they run. Bear in mind though that the process of getting the facility/scheme may be fairly lengthy.

Shares

Now is a great time to buy some shares in that company you have always wanted to invest in. The volatility in most

Buy Hold And Sell Red Dice Representing Stocks Strategy

share prices between 2015 and 2016 has been quite significant, leading to opportunities to trade (provided of course you monitor the movements VERY closely) and also buy to keep. If you’re buying to keep, my advice would be to stick to blue chip companies as they are generally structured to be around for the long haul and are able to weather most economic storms.

There has been quite a dip in the price of shares compared to this time last year which has made it easier to invest in shares as part of a long term investment plan. The economy is on the way to rebuilding itself which should in turn raise the value of your investment shares over time. Just as a guide, here are some comparisons of some blue chip company shares in 2015 against 2016.

Company  (February 2015 Average) (February 2016 Average)

  • GTBank                  N22                       N16
  • First Bank              N3                         N6
  • Nestle                     N767                     N670
  • Guinness               N122                     N115

As always, do your homework and talk to experts before investing.
These are just two out of many opportunities out there. Study economic outlooks for the year and look at the industries to watch out for as these investments are sure to create a secure financial future for you.
In the next issue we will go through key areas to look at for when trying to make an investment decision.

Women Do What Is Right and Earn Your Rights – The Renaissance

Transforming the Female Mind- The Renaissance!

www.essence.com

www.essence.com

Nigeria’s Senate recently threw out a proposed bill aimed at seeking equal rights for women. Women Rights activists say the bill was designed to promote women’s equality in Marriage, Inheritance, Job and Education.

The Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill was aimed at promoting equality, development and advancement of all persons in Nigeria as well as promoting women’s freedom of movement, female economic activity and girls’ access to education. This is really commendable and I applaud the people behind this move.

But I need to raise a few issues and ask a few questions and please kindly pardon my ignorance and inexperience. This is not intended to slight my fellow women, as some will be quick to conclude and take offense but we need to point out some areas we need to work on which are absolutely imperative. The truth they say is bitter!

With regards to Equal Rights to Education, is there a law that forbids the female child from getting same education as the male child? Or is it that we have more male schools in Nigeria than female schools? Or perhaps is there a woman who got a first class but she wasn’t awarded because she is FEMALE? Or is there a limit to the level of Education available to women in Nigeria?

The issue of Equal Job Opportunity is quite an exciting one! I thought the women themselves defined what jobs and occupation are “feminine” and which is not? Enough respect to my friend Joan Obasi who is a female pilot now because she challenged herself while working as an Air Hostess that she could do more! Except for a few like her who have broken the norm, most women would not be caught dead being an Auto Mechanic or Engineer, Pilot (It’s more feminine to be an Air Hostess), Civil Engineers, Naval Officers etc. Why? Women would say it’s a job too tedious for their gender and not because they were qualified but refused the opportunity. Some who are brave enough to try are enjoying these jobs now. Or is there a law that restricts Nigerian women to certain jobs?

For Female Economic Activities I wonder, are women denied financial aids like bank loans to carry out their businesses just because they are women? To the best of my knowledge, survey shows women are more credit worthy so financial institutions are happier to transact with them.

Even on the entrepreneurial journey, women themselves have defined what businesses are “women friendly” or feminine…Boutiques, Salons, Supermarket, Make Up, Bead making and Gele tying. Most Women would not readily consider Export, Auto Sales or Maintenance, Horticulture etc. The few women who take the bold step to try their hands on the male dominated trade were never stopped by any bill or constitution.

So, is it really a Bill that wasn’t passed that is holding us back here? And when this Bill is passed and women still refuse to take the chance to aspire to challenging profession and greatness, what next?

Equality in Marriage? Well…I guess I really need not state the obvious! The originator of marriage has given the guidelines and organogram in this institution. It is at anyone’s peril to try to do otherwise. That would amount to buying machinery and refusing to use the manufacturer’s manual for installation and operations…disaster is inevitable!

What is my point exactly? There are worse issues plaguing the Nigerian women that require urgent attention. One of such is our limiting beliefs that women cannot and should not have certain aspirations and ambitions which are as a result of our native laws, ancestral customs and traditional believes than of Bills and Constitution!

Women Rights

www.blackenterprise.com

Nigerian Women themselves need to rewrite their mental DNA, reconstruct their psychological anatomy and regurgitate the chauvinistic bile they have swallowed over the years in order to have a clearer picture of what their issues are.

Nigerian Women need a swift change in mindset, attitude, perspective, behaviors and over all outlook! No Bill can change these and this is what we really need in order to make a head way in life. Even if the bill is passed and we continue to revel in our idiosyncrasies, it would be of no impact on the long run. So we’ve got some good house keeping to do!

We need to learn to set our priorities right. Take this scenario for example…Many women would spend upwards of N50,000 for Aso-Ebi (Party Wears)…they will attend parties no matter the location but won’t spend a quarter of that amount to empower and improve themselves. If you throw out an invite for an enlightenment programme like conferences and seminars, you are likely to have more men. But if you throw out an invite for a party, you are likely to have more women. Yet we want equal opportunity with these men who invest in training themselves? Such opportunities are earned and not demanded! Ask the likes of Okonjo Iweala and Akunna Oteh!

More than anything else, women really need to rise above the customs and beliefs that hold them down! Bill or no Bill… Law or no Law…any woman who chooses to stay down will remain down…those who have chosen to soar are doing so without any constitutional restrictions or approvals. Those who have swaddled themselves in traditional and customary beliefs like beef in burger, have made that their own very set backs. Let’s rid our systems of these!

Another problem with Women worse than the bill rejection is the fact that most women do not support one another. They are sometimes the very architects of their own misfortune! These same RIGHTS we are clamoring for, we are the first to cast aspersions on a fellow woman striving to attain them. When a woman gets to the peak of her education, career or business endeavor, it is her fellow women who see her as a threat and begin to insinuate all sorts to explain to themselves how she got there! Even in marriage, you would barely hear of a Father-In-Law who is a pain…it is always the women; Mother-in-laws and Sister-in-laws that are the greatest antagonist. Even if the men grant us equal opportunity in marriage, the women go gree???

They barely see good in one another hence you rarely find women supporting one another…a custom we need to come together to change real quick. Thank God for forums like the AMAZING AMAZON INITIATIVE where women have come together to bond and pledge to be a pillar of support to one another!

In the last elections, the only female presidential candidate got only 3 votes, meaning all her friends and family did not vote for her…only herself, her husband (maybe) and perhaps her kid did! None of the women crying for women’s equal right voted for her evidently…neither did I! Not because we doubted her antecedents or pedigree but only because she is a WOMAN! The women would not even support one of their own. Some would argue they didn’t because they knew she couldn’t deliver…that she needed more experience and all that. But if all the women voted her in and the best of us lent our support and expertise to her, she will succeed. Ruling a country is not one person’s job…it is a collective responsibility!

women rights

www.informationng.com

Wouldn’t it be better if the women in the Senate ensure that a single bill is passed prohibiting DOMESTIC VIOLENCE against women and ensuring this is ENFORCED in practice not just in principle or on paper in order to ensure that abusers are actually PROSECUTED? My thoughts…if we fight for a Bill to be equal, can we still get the law to protect us from Abuse from our “equals”? I don’t know!

A Tiger does not proclaim its Tigritude, so says Prof Wole Soyinka. Just like respect, Rights could be earned and not demanded. I have never heard of Men’s Rights…they have apparently worked hard to earn it without demanding it. Is it possible we make the necessary change and begin to work hard to earn our rights?

A Tiger does not proclaim its Tigritude, so says Prof Wole Soyinka.
Click To Tweet

Moreover, Bill passed or not…I personally do not see how it can or would stop me from being all that God has destined for me to be. The only thing that limits us in life is the limits we have set on ourselves.

My fellow Women let us never forget that we are first of all HUMANS before WOMEN! No one stops Okonjo Iweala, Folorunsho Alakija, Ibukun Awosika, Adenike Ogunlesi, Chiamamda Adichie, Arunma Oteh and the many successful Nigerian women. Even in times past when there was little civilization and education, the likes of Margareth Ekpo, Queen Moremi, Queen Amina, Queen Idia, Flora Nwapa, Grace Alele Williams, Stella Jibril, Chris Anyanwu did not need a bill passed for them to function and live a life of purpose!

So Sisters, go out there and chase your dreams like the men are doing and be all that you want to be. There is nothing stopping you…no Bill…no Constitution! Asking men to give us Equal Rights implies it is theirs to give. Instead, do what is right and you will earn your rights!

Sexual Assault Allegation Investigation Ongoing at Queens College Yaba

Olaseni Oshifala‎, a Biology teacher, was purportedly accused by a parent, Chinenye Okoye, of forcefully trying to kiss and touch the private parts of her daughter, a JSS 2 pupil.

According to Mrs. Okoye‎, the teacher cornered her daughter on her way back from relieving herself just before lights out and assaulted her. “She started screaming and then students started coming out so he left her and pretended to punish her,” she added.

The claims went viral on social media last weekend forcing the college alumni to convene an emergency meeting.

www.queenscollegelagos.com

The management of Queens College, Lagos, has thrown its weight behind one of its teachers accused of sexually assaulting a female student. In a statement issued by the school after the meeting, Lami Amodu, the Principal,‎ said the claims was an attempt to ridicule, not just Mr Olaseni, but the “hard-earned reputation” of Queens College.

“When I resumed work as principal here, I was told of a certain matron who housed a person that had attempted to have an affair with a student,” Mrs. Amodu began.

“I was not here when it happened but as soon as I was told, I made sure that the matron was moved out of the school premises. I have zero tolerance for such behaviour. I have a daughter who schools here, even before I began work here. I will not take chances.

“As I talk to you, no single parent has come to me or any of my Vice-Principals to report Olaseni as a molester. I assure you that if the allegation was true, other parents would have been buzzing our lines non-stop. Children spread gossip fast. They would tell their parents or relations, if anyone was molesting them here. No parent would take such news lightly.

“When this news reached me, I summoned an emergency meeting of all the critical stakeholders. We all discussed  before inviting Mr Osifala. Every one of my staff says positive things about the man. Of course they were all here (Queens College) before me, so they are qualified to assess members of staff properly.”

“Let us not forget that Olaseni worked with five different principals, all of who also told me good words about him, despite the various allegations against him,” she said.

“I have investigated and we are not relenting in our determination to get to the bottom of this case. The man in question has been of impeccable character and committed service since I resumed work here. I can vouch for him.

“When I resumed work here, I was told a few unsavoury things about him. But investigations showed that each time a new principal resumed at Queens College, these allegations popped up. They would tell every new principal that Mr Olaseni is a molester. But after investigations, nothing concrete came up. My predecessor, whom we just sent forth today, told me the same thing. So it has been a recurring decimal, these allegations.”

Mrs. Amodu said there was a campaign of calumny ‎against Mr. Osifala who happens to be “the best teacher in our school.”

“During World Teachers’ Day, he bagged five awards. The students all have good things to say about him. Somebody somewhere is up to some mischief and we will uncover this unfortunate drama,” the school principal said.

“We place a premium on the security and welfare of our girls. We are all mothers. We will not allow any staff to endanger girls in this school.”

No Abuse

The Chairperson of the school’s Parents-Teachers Association, B.E Akhetuamen, also said the claims were an attempt to pull down Mr. Oshifala.

“I have two daughters schooling here,” she said.

“After six years in the school, I should be able to trust them to intimate me about things that happen in the school, especially when I ask. They have made it clear to me, no such thing occurred. Meanwhile, no parent has called me to make any such allegation against the teacher in question and I find it very strange.

Mrs. Akhetuamen said if such a thing had happened, the students themselves would have given the matter leverage.

QCOGA take a firm stand against the case of Sexual Harassment

Queen’s College Old Girls association has formed a committee that is committed to looking into these allegations and ensuring that justice is served and that the teacher in question will be fully investigated.

Top TEN Questions About Tuberculosis:

tuberculosis

www.dreamstime.com

  1. What Is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. It primarily causes disease in the lungs, but can affect other body parts such as the spine. Most people with Tuberculosis do not have symptoms and are not infectious (Latent Tuberculosis), however approximately 10% of these cases progress to an infectious form with symptoms (Active Tuberculosis) which can be deadly.

  1. How is Tuberculosis transmitted?

The bacteria is transmitted through respiratory droplets from a person infected with active Tuberculosis. This usually occurs when the person coughs, sneezes, speaks or sings. The bacteria can then either be removed by the body’s immune system, or can cause an acute infection (Active Tuberculosis) or be “walled off” by the body and remain dormant until later re-activated (Latent Tuberculosis). Any person suspected of having Tuberculosis should be isolated into an environment that limits airborne transmission.

  1. What are common signs and symptoms of Tuberculosis?

Persistent (and often bloody) cough lasting greater than 3 weeks, chest pain with breathing or coughing, unintentional weight loss, fever, night sweats, chills.

*these could also be symptoms of other medical ailments, please see your primary doctor for further evaluation*

  1. Is Tuberculosis a public health problem in Nigeria?

Yes it is; Nigeria ranks as 3rd in the 22 countries with the highest prevalence of Tuberculosis. There is a National TB and Leprosy Control Programme aimed at alleviating this burden which mainly occurs because of poor awareness, poor access to care and limited supply of medications.

  1. Can Latent Tuberculosis make one sick?

No it does not, as they are not infectious and cannot spread the bacteria from one person to another. However treatment is often recommended to decrease the chances of progressing to active Tuberculosis. This Tuberculosis re-activation can occur if the immune system becomes weakened or if there is contact with a person with active Tuberculosis.

  1. How is Tuberculosis treated?

There are multiple medications and different treatment regimens for both Latent and Active Tuberculosis. A doctor will explain the different options and select the most appropriate regimen.

  1. The duration of treatment is long, do I need to complete it?

Yes! There is a great risk of MDR-TB (Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis) that can occur with uncompleted courses of treatment. This form of Tuberculosis is very dangerous because it is resistant to many of our initial medications. The duration of treatment for MDR-TB is also longer than the normal Tuberculosis treatment course.

  1. Is there a vaccine for Tuberculosis?

Yes, the BCG vaccine is given early in infancy in many developing countries to protect against Tuberculosis.

  1. What is the TB skin test?

The Tuberculosis skin test is used to detect if a person has been exposed to Tuberculosis. A healthcare professional will inject a purified Tuberculin derivative into the skin then re-asses the injection site 2 to 3days later. A positive reaction requires further assessment to determine if the person has Latent or active Tuberculosis.

  1. What should I do if I have been around someone with Tuberculosis?

See your primary doctor for a full evaluation of symptoms and diagnostic tests.

What Easter Really Celebrates (Resurrection Day)

0
0

Have your children asked you what Easter is really about? Mine did and I decided to take the time to explain. Easter is more than what the commercial side makes it out to be about Easter chocolates, Egg hunts, frijon and the Easter Bunny.

Easter, the name this period is called, is a time to remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the cross.

Jesus Christ was sent to earth in the form of man and was crucified on the cross for us, for our sins, so that we might be saved. He was sent down from heaven to earth and had to be crucified as part of God’s plan of salvation for us.

Jesus Christ was whipped, treated very badly by people, suffered and ultimately crucified on the cross for us. It happened this way because this is how God said it would happen. When anyone watches the Passion for Christ you feel the real pain of what Jesus must have gone through.

Jesus was then brought down from the cross and buried but he didn’t stay dead, he had power over death!!

On the third day, Jesus Christ was resurrected and he rose from the dead. This was part of God’s plan to give us a gift of salvation that no one can take away from us.

Jesus paid for our debt and sins so that we may be saved, He has taken our sickness so that we are healed. He is at the right hand of God in heaven and is there as our intercessor pleading on our behalf. He has told us that anything we ask in his name shall be granted.

Coming down to earth in the form of flesh, meant that he went through all the temptations and things that you and I face so he understands what we go through and as he is in heaven at the right hand side of God he pleads on our behalf. There is no other mediator needed other than Jesus Christ. He has also been so kind to give us another gift in the form of the Holy Spirit who lives within us.

So when we think of Easter we should remember that God had a plan and he always has a plan. God sent Jesus Christ, the second and last Adam, a perfect person who didn’t sin to die for our sins. He was a blameless and perfect sacrifice and everyone that believes in Jesus Christ, that he shed his blood for us, and resurrected after paying the ultimate sacrifice, is saved and does not have to die any longer because we have access to eternal life.

What a gift ‘Easter” really is.
