The Power Of Grandparents

Raising children is an interesting experience and while we are trying to figure it out, we should not forget the power of grandparents. Parenting does not really have a clear pathway, it has its twists and turns and sometimes you might say you really can’t say which way it would go.

However I’ve come to realize that there’s a resource many of us never really tap into; a resource that can be helpful and can in many ways tide us on the journey towards raising whole children who can stand on their own in this world we live in. This great resource is called “Grandparents.”

Grandparents

I hope it’s not groaning I hear because this is really important. I found out that involving grandparents in the lives of our children is healthy for you, your parents and your children. I can hear someone ask; Why? Let’s start with the children. As a parent, your child is a responsibility that you have which cannot be taken lightly. It’s a full time job and there are no breaks. You are always on the child’s case to make sure they turn out right. Time spent with grandparents spoil the children a little. In my own opinion, there’s a little spoiling that is needed for the proper development of every child; emphasis on the word “little’’. Grandparents are licensed individuals allowed to carry out that spoiling.

I don’t know about you but when my kids go over to their grandparents, it’s a very interesting experience. Everything is allowed, they are spared scolding and they are just given healthy doses of love which does a lot for their self-esteem. They know that grandpa or grandma will make everything right. On some occasions, even I, the mum have been reported to grandpa.

Secondly, it’s healthy for you. Why? It gives you a chance to rest. I love my children, I can’t imagine a life without them but sometimes, I need a well-deserved break. Grandparents give you an opportunity to do just that. Time away from home gives you time to carry out tasks you’ve been meaning to do, sleep well without waking up at night to check if anyone is alright. It gives you some bonding time with your husband. It just gives you a break. Now, I assure you, you’ll miss them. The last time my children were away, the house was so quiet. I’d call over and over again to be sure they were fine. I just had time on my hands, but I was able to rest, re strategize and plan for the future.

Lastly, you give the grandparents an opportunity to nurture children again. For most grandparents, their children are all grown and living outside the home. They have minimal say on how you run your life or the decisions you make. But giving them an opportunity in their grandchildren’s lives help them reconnect with you, remember fond memories and feel useful again. It is one great way to bond with you all over again.

This is a tribute to my children’s grandparents who have always been part of my children’s lives. They have given us support in more ways than we can count. Thank you four of you for contributing to the richness of my children’s lives.

Recipe Coconut Chicken Drumsticks

Chicken is a regular in many homes across Nigeria and around the globe. It is a rich source of protein and the good things.

You can season in different ways, get a variety of flavors, add to various dishes, most children love it and its pretty in-expensive? Would you agree?

To get the most of the nutrients in food preparation generally is about cooking method and how you “spice it up”. This simple yet tasty recipe uses the oven method because it keeps all the nutrients locked in.

Ingredients

For this simple recipe (family of 4), you need

A bag of soft chicken drumsticks

1 to 2 large spring onion (chopped)

1 small red onion (roughly chopped)

1 tin coconut milk

Fresh lemon

1 tsp. Rapeseed oil (alternatively use olive oil) – (I will highlight on some important reasons why certain oils are better than others in future posts)

1 scotch bonnet pepper or some ground red pepper (optional) – be careful of quantities especially if children will be eating the chicken as well

Herbs, Spices and Seasoning: 1 clove garlic, small ginger (crushed), 1 tsp. oregano, 1 tsp. curry powder-mild or medium, 1 tsp parsley, some fresh thyme, ½ tsp. basil ( or some fresh efirin), black pepper (dash), little knorr chicken cube, and salt to taste.

TIP: Depending on the size of your family, you may need to adjust the quantities.

Method

Grease an oven tray with 1tsp. rapeseed oil (alternatively olive oil). Clean chicken and place in the tray. Add the chopped spring onions and the Herbs, spices and seasonings mentioned above and mix together

coconut chicken drumsticks

Rub in the coconut milk

Poke the chicken with a little knife to allow increased heat penetration. Drizzle a little squeeze of fresh lemon, then place in a fan assisted oven @ 180°C for about 15- 20mins

coconut chicken drumsticks

At this point the chicken is cooking nicely, it’s juicy and children love it! If you want some more crust to it… change oven to grill so heat comes from the top. Leave for another 5 -6 minutes

coconut chicken drumsticks

Its ready… taste those beautiful flavors- The little “jus”… save as part of your chicken stock for stews, curries etc.… story for another day ☺

11-Year-Old Lands Million Dollar Deal With Whole Foods

11-year-old Mikaila Ulmer is doing more than running on the playground! She just landed a million-dollar deal with Whole Foods, selling her all natural lemonade!

Mikaila won $60,000 for her BeeSweet lemonade business on the TV show “Shark Tank” last year and since then has made major moves. She, along with her mother, used her fear of bees for a research assignment about the endangered status of bees and decided to use honey as sweetener for the lemonade instead of sugar. Mikaila wants to help save the bees and uses some of her profits to help organisations with the same goal as her, she told NBCBLK.

11 year Old

Her lemonade is made from her grandma’s recipe and will be sold at 55 Whole Foods stores, according to NBC. On top of her distribution deal with Whole Foods, she also has one with United Natural Foods and is still a student. She also leads workshops regarding saving the bees and has plans to travel to South Africa to talk to young girls about entrepreneurship.

She has visited the White House and met the President and First Lady at the Kids’ State Dinner and her mother says she is hardworking and kind, which she feels is more important than business.

We are always proud of youth doing more to give back! We can’t wait to try little Mikaila’s BeeSweet Lemonade!

15 Common Problems That You May Face During Pregnancy

$

0

Pregnancy is a special time in your life. And, as excited as you may be about your impending or ongoing pregnancy, there are quite a few hiccups along the way. But, most problems you face during pregnancy are, in fact, quite common.

Of course, you should always consult your doctor whenever you experience any discomfort during pregnancy. In the meanwhile, we’ve compiled a list of 15 problems that you may have to experience when you are pregnant. So, read our post and keep yourself informed.

pregnancy

www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au

Bleeding In The Gums:
  • When you are pregnant, you may experience some swelling and pain in your gums, especially when you brush.
  • You may notice blood from your gums while you brush, which often happens when there are hormonal changes as a result of being pregnant.
  • The condition is commonly known as pregnancy gingivitis, and can also sometimes be an indication of gum disease. Make sure you speak to your doctor and dentist about it.
Feeling Very Hot:
  • It is quite normal to feel hot at all times, even when the weather may not be that hot.
  • You may feel that you are always sweating, or feel too flushed and uncomfortable, as if you are having a heatstroke.
  • The change in your hormone levels along with the increase in the supply of blood to your skin is responsible for this increase in your body heat during pregnancy.
3. Urinary Incontinence:
  • Urinary incontinence is a condition in which you may unwillingly end up leaking a little urine while you cough, sneeze or sometimes even laugh out loud.
  • Though it can be extremely embarrassing, it is a very common problem during and for some time after your pregnancy.
  • When you are pregnant, your pelvic muscles begin to relax and prepare for the impending birth. It means that you have less control over your pelvic muscles. You can ask your doctor to recommend you some pelvic floor exercises and also let you know which ones are safe for you to try.

4. Constipation:
  • The many hormonal changes in your body can often leave you feeling constipated, or make it very uncomfortable for you to pass stool.
  • To avoid constipation, make sure you drink at least eight to ten glasses of water each day. Consider including more liquids to your diet, such as fresh juices, milkshakes, tender coconut water and such.
  • If your doctor has started you on iron supplements, ask if you can change the brand or put it on hold for some time.
5. Vivid, Strange And Unexplainable Dreams:
  • It may often be scary, but it is extremely normal to have vivid dreams when you are pregnant.
  • In most cases, the dreams will be extremely strange and you will find it hard to explain why you had such a dream in the first place.
  • Having such dreams is extremely common. When you are pregnant, especially if you are pregnant for the first time, it can give rise to a lot of anxiety and confusion. You may constantly be worrying about how you will cope up as a mother, how you can ensure that both you and your baby are safe and many more such things. The uncertainty, the anxiety and all the hormonal and other changes happening inside you are what can lead to the unexplainable and vivid dreams.
6. Feeling Excessively Tired:
  • Sometimes, you may start feeling tired only around the third trimester, but in many cases, you can also feel very tired during your first 12 weeks.
  • The many hormonal changes that you experience will make you feel tired at all times, even if you have rested well.
  • Listen to your body and get rest whenever you feel tired. Avoid walking too much or doing things that can tire you.
7. Itching:
  • When you are pregnant, your body will pump a higher amount of blood to your skin. As a result, you will feel the skin starts itching.
  • Once you reach towards your third trimester, or your bump starts to grow considerably, it will stretch the skin around your abdomen and lead to more itching.
  • Mild itching is common and natural, but make sure that you do not suffer from severe itching. If you do, it could be a sign of a health condition known as obstetric cholestasis or intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) [1].
8. Headache:
  • You may experience mild headache in the first few weeks of pregnancy, while in some cases, it could also be quite severe. Even though they are a normal occurrence, headaches can be very uncomfortable.
  • The main reason you experience headaches when you are pregnant is the change in your hormone levels.
  • Try yoga or relaxation techniques, make sure you get enough sleep and are well rested and drink at least eight to ten glasses of water to minimize the discomfort.
9. Heartburn And Indigestion:
  • The hormonal changes you go through will lead to indigestion, sometimes as early as the start of your second trimester.
  • Also, as your unborn baby grows bigger and your womb expands, it will put a considerable amount of pressure on your stomach. As a result, you can experience a lot of indigestion and heartburn.
  • Eat light meals and break them up into six small meals through the day instead of three big ones. Avoid eating fried or oily food and opt for lighter meals. Do not stay hungry as it can trigger heartburn.
10. Bleeding Through The Nose:
  • While it can definitely make you panic, a little nose bleed when you are pregnant is actually very common and nothing to worry about.
  • The main reason is the change in your levels of hormones.
  • Also, when you are pregnant, your skin tends to get drier than usual. The same applies to the skin inside your nose, which can often feel chaffed and bleed a little.
11. Leakage From Nipples:
  • You probably thought that you will start producing milk once your baby arrives. In fact, your body will start preparing milk as soon as you are pregnant.
  • It is absolutely normal for your breasts to start leaking a little milk when you are pregnant.
  • The fluid that you see now will be colostrum, the first milk that your body produces.
12. Increase In Vaginal Discharge:
  • During your pregnancy, you may notice an increase in the amount of discharge from your vagina.
  • Not only will the amount change, but you will also notice a difference in the texture and smell of the discharge.
  • Do not worry, as it is extremely normal. When you are pregnant, the walls of your vagina will turn softer. The increase in vaginal discharge will help to ward off any infection that can otherwise move from the vagina to the womb.
13. Bleeding From The Vagina:
  • While bleeding from your vagina while you are pregnant is a common and normal occurrence, you need to tell your doctor about it the moment you spot it.
  • The little blood you notice during your early pregnancy is known as spotting. It happens when the embryo gets implanted in the walls of your womb.
  • If you notice the bleeding in the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy, it could also be a sign of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy [2]. Do not panic yet, as many women who do experience vaginal bleeding during this time also go on to have healthy pregnancies and births. Make sure you do inform your doctor immediately about it though.
14. Unable To Sleep Or Insomnia:
  • As tired and exhausted as you may feel when you are pregnant, it is also possible that you will find it difficult to sleep.
  • The many changes in your body and the hormonal imbalance that you are going through at this time will also make it difficult for you to get proper sleep. Once your abdomen grows considerably, you may also feel a considerable amount of pressure when you lie down.
  • Don’t think about it too much, as it will make you worry more and further elude sleep. Try and find a position that you feel is the most comfortable for you. If you feel you can’t sleep for too long at a stretch, nap during the day and whenever you can. You can also try and sit in a comfortable chair and get some sleep time.
15. Pain In The Pelvic Region:
  • While it is not extremely common, many women do experience a lot of pain and discomfort in their pelvic region while they are pregnant.
  • The pelvic pain during pregnancy is known as pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PPGP) or symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD).
  • Some common symptoms of PPGP are pain on both sides of your lower back, pain in the area between your vagina and anus, and pain over and near the pubic bone.
  • You can feel the pain most when you are walking, turning in bed, climbing stairs or standing on one leg.
  • Speak to your doctor immediately, as soon as you notice the pain.

Pregnancy comes with a host of changes to your body, and many of them can lead to various uncomfortable symptoms. While most problems shared here are very common, remember that every pregnancy is unique. What can be normal for someone may need medical assistance in another. So make sure you discuss everything with your doctor.

Moms, which of these problems did you face while you were pregnant? Do tell us about it here.

Autism Spectrum Disorders: Your Questions Answered

What are Autism Spectrum Disorders?

The term “Autism” has been expanded into “Autism Spectrum Disorders” (ASD), which is a group of brain developmental disorders characterised by challenges in communication and social interaction along with persistent repetitive behaviours. There is a wide variety of symptoms and severity across the spectrum, ranging from mild challenges to interference with daily life. Currently, 1 in 160 children worldwide has an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

autism

www.nhws.us

Do childhood vaccines cause Autism?

Current research shows that vaccines DO NOT cause Autism Spectrum Disorders, and previous studies suggesting that they did have serious flaws and are not accepted by the medical community. The exact cause of Autism Spectrum Disorders is unknown, however genetics and environmental factors appear to play a role.

How are Autism Spectrum Disorders diagnosed?

There is currently no specific medical test to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorders. Parents, caregivers and school teachers are thus advised to remain alert about any unusual behaviors in children that might be signs of a developmental disorder. These behaviors include a child playing with toys in unusual, restricted and repetitive ways; failing to respond to his/her name or failing to make eye contact. If any of these signs are noted, please alert your child’s primary care doctor. A list of questions called the M-CHAT (Modified Checklist of Autism in Toddlers) will be performed to indicate if he/she will need further evaluation by a specialist.

What treatment options exist?

Each individual with an Autism Spectrum Disorder is unique, and so intervention needs to be tailored to address their specific needs. These interventions include behavioral treatments and structured therapeutic activities that target the areas affected by the disorder. Some interventions also involve a child’s entire family, under direct supervision of therapists and specialists. Adolescents can also receive transition services to assist them with maturation into adulthood.

Can a child ever “outgrow” an Autism Spectrum Disorder?

There is currently no cure for an Autism Spectrum Disorder, however evidence suggests that some children “outgrow” their diagnosis. This has been shown to occur in some children who were initially incorrectly diagnosed, or who had higher IQs at diagnosis or were initially diagnosed with milder forms of ASD. Some children who received early communication skills and intensive therapy have also been shown to “lose” their ASD diagnosis, but further research is needed before it can be conclusively determined that a child can “outgrow” an ASD.

Are there Autism Spectrum Disorder resources or support services in Lagos?

Yes, there are a number of NGOs and a few schools for Autistic children in Lagos. Please see your primary care doctor for more information on how to access these resources.

Does Your Child Respect Authority? A to Z Parenting Tips

$
0
0

A to Z Parenting Tips starts with “Authority” – Does your child respect Authority?

You: “Please put your things away.”

Your child: “I’m busy. I’ll do it later.”

You: “You need to do your homework.”

Your child: “It’s stupid. I’m not doing it!”

You: “You’re not allowed to go to that party. You’re grounded.”

Your child: “NO! I’m not grounded! I’m going!”

Does it ever feel like your child or teenager has an answer for everything—and usually takes the exact opposite position on what you’ve just said? Many kids struggle with authority and or have trouble following rules, complying with limits or generally disrespectful to others. Some wear their defiance on their sleeves and are angry in their refusal (How dare you tell me what to do?!). Others are more subtle and simply “dig their heels in.”

“Why do some kids fight so hard against authority, as if giving up control is equal to drowning?”

Parenting Tips on Authority

What’s Your Child’s Style of Defiance?

On the other hand, defiance may be hard to pinpoint. Your daughter appears to follow your rules initially, but then goes behind your back and does something completely different. The fight doesn’t come when the directive or rule is given but instead it comes later, after she’s been caught disobeying. Whatever a child’s style of defiance may be, it can leave parents, teachers and other authority figures feeling frustrated, angry and unsure how to respond.

Why do some kids fight so hard against authority, as if giving up control is equal to drowning? Possibly because that’s exactly how it feels to them. We often look to the why in order to figure out how to change the behaviour. Personality can certainly play a role – some people hate rules and authority their whole lives. Other factors can include depression, anxiety, ADHD or other conditions that may contribute to a child struggling with behaviour.

Adults often spend a great deal of time trying to identify potential triggers to a child’s defiance. In fact, there may be multiple triggers: being told “no,” facing a limit or rule, or feeling jealous or uncomfortable can certainly contribute to defiant behaviour. Professionals use the term Oppositional Defiant Disorder (O.D.D.) to describe a child whose defiant behaviour has escalated to the point that it has become a pattern. In some cases, we may never be able to determine exactly why a child is making certain choices or behaving a certain way.

The Real World Vs. Your Child on Authority

It can be helpful to identify triggers to educate and support your child so she might change her behaviour. But the fact is, the world and society aren’t going to go out of their way to avoid “triggering” your child during the course of her life. Regardless of the reasons we struggle, society has expectations. As parents, it’s our job to prepare our kids for life in the Real World. And the Real World often doesn’t take kindly to individuals who constantly challenge and defy authority.

So what can we do, as parents trying to raise a child into a productive member of society—a person who thinks for themselves, yet isn’t always fighting authority or refusing to comply with rules?

  1. Don’t fall into the trap of excuses and blame.

When an issue comes up with your child, stay focused on the topic – your child’s behaviour and the potential consequences. For example, your child might say, “I didn’t do my homework because the teacher didn’t explain what we were supposed to do.” He blames his refusal to do homework on his teacher, and says the teacher doesn’t treat him fairly in class.

Our advice to his parent: Try not to get caught up in the idea that Johnny’s teacher “isn’t fair.” There’s lots of injustice in the world and Johnny will encounter it frequently – as we all do in real life. Stay focused on the behaviour (Johnny’s refusal to do his work) and the potential consequences (failing his class). You can say, “It sounds like you’re blaming your teacher for the fact that you didn’t do your homework…but it is your responsibility.”

  2. Don’t fall into emotional traps.

It’s easy to get caught up in the emotion of your child’s defiance. They are upset so you are upset and sometimes teachers or other adults are upset. Again, it takes the focus off the topic at hand. Don’t personalise what your child is saying or doing—just stay as objective as you can and focus on the matter at hand.

  3. Teach your child to think.

Kids who defy authority are often reacting to adults and rules, rather than making conscious, deliberate choices. They don’t take time to think their actions through to what the potential consequences might be for their behaviour. Weighing decisions and consequences, creating a list of pros and cons and then making a well thought-out choice is one of the most valuable skills your child can learn.

It’s never too early to start teaching your child how to evaluate situations. So the next time she makes a comment like, “I’m not going to study for the test,” instead of getting caught up in emotion (which is natural for parents), ask her questions instead: “What might happen if you choose not to study?” If she responds with, “Nothing,” try to stay calm and continue with questions rather launching into a lecture or fight. You might ask, “Could you get a lower score, or even fail the test—or the class?” The point of the questions is not to interrogate, but to teach your child to think rather than react.

  4. Remember that consequences are a part of life.

Whether they are natural consequences – something that occur naturally as a direct result of your child’s actions – or consequences that you provide, it’s how your child will learn about life. Allow them to occur even when your instincts shout out to save your child from being uncomfortable.

Authority and School

School offers daily opportunities for conflict when a child defies authority. You might think of school as a preparation for the future workplace environment your child will potentially encounter. There are principals, teachers (bosses) and peers (co-workers). There are rules, expectations and rewards.

  • Remember: school is your child’s job, not yours.

Whenever possible, allow your child to remain responsible for his or her behaviour and performance. As a parent, you can encourage and support your child. Remember, your child is learning habits for a lifetime. In fifteen years, his co-worker won’t write his reports for him!

  • Keep the focus on your child when communicating with the school.

When a child defies authority, teachers and principals may try to hold you accountable for her behaviour. Why? Because your child doesn’t care (or is acting like she doesn’t). School staff will look to someone who does care, in order to change the behaviour. Often, that turns out to be the parent. If you find that happening, redirect the focus back to holding your child accountable as much as possible.

One final note on Authority: While we want to raise children who obey rules and respect authority. We are not trying to stifle children,we want our children to learn to be “critical thinkers.” The key is to encourage independent thinking while also teaching our kids to be respectful of authority and think through the consequences before they act.

“Remember to be a leader one day and give orders, children must learn to be able to obey and take orders today. Learning authority starts from the home”.

NIGERIAN MOMS JOINS TIWA IN ENDORSING THE IMPROVED PAMPERS BABY-DRY

Moms always know what is best for the baby and at an event organized by Nigeria’s driest diaper, Pampers Baby Dry; many Nigerian moms have joined Tiwa Savage in endorsing Pampers for delivering on its promise of superior dryness and comfortability.

The special event which was held at Best Western Plus Hotel Ikeja, Lagos had no fewer than hundred moms who were in attendance with Tiwa Savage as the host. The moms had a great time together sharing useful baby tips and motherhood experiences among themselves.

Tiwa Pampers

Many of the moms were eager to express their satisfaction on the usage of the improved Pampers diaper saying that it gives their children the needed comfort and soothes their skins. One of such is Mrs. Anike Sholanke who attended the event from Bauchi state. She said that ever since she switched to Pampers Baby Dry some months ago, it provides the needed comfort for her baby.

Tiwa Pampers Baby Dry

In her words; “To say I love Pampers Baby Dry for my baby is an understatement. After my baby developed rashes from using another diaper, I decided to switch to Pampers. Since then I believe there are no diapers that compare to Pampers baby dry when it comes to versatility and affordability, Pampers Baby Dry delivers ultimate comfort to my baby. It’s highly absorbent and my baby has never had diaper rash ever since she started using Pampers Baby Dry.”

Pampers and Baby

Continuing in the endorsement of the brand, Joy Osakwe said having tried other baby diapers in the market including the foreign diapers she finally settled for Pampers Baby-Dry because it met all her baby’s diapering needs.

The event host and brand advocate, Tiwa Savage told the moms that the brand is fully vested in supporting the healthy growth of the baby.

Pampers Baby Dry Nigeria

Tiwa explained that Pampers is the only diaper brand that has organized an instructive forum like this where moms can come together to share and learn about what is best for the baby. According to her, “that is how you know a brand that is truly committed to the healthy development of the baby, it goes beyond just the diaper and I must commend them for it.”

Pampers Paediatrician Dr. Ronke Akinola was also on ground to advise soon-to-be moms and nursing moms on the importance of having adequate sleep to their health and that of their little ones.

Pampers Baby

The event is part of the ‘Moms Know Best’ Campaign launched in January this year with the aim of enlightening Nigerian moms on the latest improvements made on Pampers Baby-Dry and also encouraging them to try it. Amongst other activities carried out was a live demo to explain how the diapers’ super gel locks wetness away better than any other diapers and how its new stretchy sides expands and relax with the baby’s tummy to prevent leakages.

The conversation continues on www.facebook.com/Pamperafrica. Join in and share your experiences and share useful tips using the hashtag #MomsKnowBest

Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder Health Concern

More than 1,000 women are suing the company for covering up a cancer risk.

Story culled from Bloomberg, By Susan Berfield, Jef Feeley, and Margaret Cronin Fisk | March 31, 2016

Jacqueline Fox worked in restaurant kitchens and school cafeterias, cleaned people’s houses, watched their kids, raised a son, and took in two foster children. She was careful about her appearance and liked to tend the garden in front of her home in Birmingham, Alabama. She had been treated for high blood pressure, arthritis, and diabetes, but, at 59, she was feeling pretty good. In the spring of 2013, her poodle, Dexter, began acting strangely. He’d jump on her, he’d cry, he’d stay close by all day. Fox happened to watch a television program about a dog that sensed its owner was unwell. When she let Dexter sniff her, he whined even more.

www.independant.co.uk

www.independant.co.uk

A week later, Fox was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. She had chemotherapy to shrink the tumors and surgery to remove her uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and part of her spleen and colon. In December of that year, she saw a commercial from an Alabama law firm, Beasley Allen, suggesting a connection between long-term use of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and ovarian cancer. Fox had been sprinkling Baby Powder made from talc on her underwear every day since she was a teen. “I was raised up on it,” she later said in a deposition. “They was to help you stay fresh and clean. … We ladies have to take care of ourselves.” It was as normal as using toothpaste or deodorant. “We both were a bit skeptical at first,” says her son, Marvin Salter, a mortgage banker in Jacksonville, Fla. “It has to be safe. It’s put on babies. It’s been around forever. Why haven’t we heard about any ill effects?”

Fox died from the cancer in October 2015. Four months later, a jury in St. Louis concluded that talcum powder contributed to the development of the disease and that Johnson & Johnson was liable for negligence, conspiracy, and failure to warn women of the potential risk of using Baby Powder in the genital area. The verdict, decided by a 10-2 vote, included $10 million in compensatory damages and $62 million in punitive damages, more than Fox’s lawyers had recommended. Salter bowed his head and wept.

“People were using something they thought was perfectly safe,” he says. “And it isn’t. At least give people the choice. J&J didn’t give people a choice.” Among the most painful revelations, he says, was that in the 1990s, even as the company acknowledged concerns in the health community, it considered increasing its marketing efforts to black and Hispanic women, who were already buying the product in high numbers. Fox was black. The jury foreman, Krista Smith, says internal documents provided the most incriminating evidence: “It was really clear they were hiding something.” She wanted to award the Fox family even more. Imerys Talc America, the biggest talc supplier in the country and the sole source of the powder for J&J, was also named as a defendant. The company wasn’t found liable.

“Jury verdicts should not be confused with regulatory rulings or rigorous scientific findings,” Carol Goodrich, a spokeswoman for Johnson & Johnson Consumer, said in an e-mail. “The overwhelming body of scientific research and clinical evidence supports the safety of cosmetic talc.” The company says it will appeal the verdict. In a statement, Imerys said it’s “confident that its products are safe for use by its customers. Our confidence is supported by the consensus view of qualified scientific experts and regulatory agencies.”

Johnson & Johnson has spent more than $5 billion to resolve legal claims over its drugs and medical devices since 2013. That year, it agreed to pay $2.2 billion to settle criminal and civil probes into claims that it illegally marketed Risperdal, an antipsychotic drug, to children and the elderly; two other medicines were included in the settlement. It was one of the largest health fraud penalties in U.S. history. The company has also agreed to pay some $2.8 billion to resolve lawsuits about its artificial hips and $120 million for faulty vaginal-mesh inserts. In its 2015 annual report, J&J stated that more than 75,000 people had filed product liability claims, and that didn’t include the talc powder cases.

Biomedical Intervention

THE EFFECT OF BIOMEDICAL INTERVENTION……

biomedical intervention

www.akhilautismfoundation.org

…… replacing the ‘harm-ies’ in your child’s diet with healing foods.

Children with additional needs often experience difficulties in certain areas of development including language, mobility, learning, self-help, independent living etc. Some common examples are children with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorders and intellectual Disability. Particularly with autism and other related conditions, research has shown that the most effective therapy is the use of intensive behaviour interventions that aim to improve the functioning of the child. These interventions focus on developing language, social responsiveness, imitation skills, and appropriate behaviours. However, a holistic management of any childhood disability requires a focus, not just on its symptoms but also its underlying cause.

Hence, the need for a biomedical treatment in addition to Psychosocial lnterventions. While parents are keen to seek psychosocial interventions for their child, they seem to be less informed about the benefits of biomedical treatments. Biomedical treatment is an evidenced based systematic approach to treating the underlying factors that predispose or exacerbate symptoms associated with some childhood disabilities, say autism, inside the body. It refers to the process of redressing  the anomalies in the child’s biochemistry through the use of specific nutrients. Biomedical intervention is a major tool used by some medical practitioners to aid the recovery of children with autism spectrum disorders.

Interestingly, Biomedical intervention is not only beneficial to children with additional needs, but also typically developing children (and some adults) experiencing food sensitivities, allergies and reactions, immune system compromise and poor gut functioning. Benefits include improvement in gut and bowel function, improved appetite and a wider variety of foods tolerated, and improvements in immune function resulting in much healthier children that are resistant to coughs, colds, ear infections, runny nose, allergies etc. There are other reports that suggest this approach to also positively influence a child’s social, communication and cognitive functioning skills. Biomedical treatment is managed by a physician with knowledge (in the specific areas) and treatment is individualized to each child’s particular needs.

FORMS OF BIOMEDICAL INTERVENTION

Depending on the child’s particular presentation, a biomedical intervention plan can follow any of the following procedures:

  • Dietary interventions e.g. GFCF, Feingold, specific carbohydrate diet, low oxalate diet, going organic, or allergy removal.
  • Normalize Essential multivitamins and nutrients which help with removal of toxins, replenish the already depleted nutrients in the body.
  • Support detoxification pathway
  • Heavy metal detoxification – Chelation.

FOCUS / AIM OF BIOMEDICAL TREATMENT

  • Clean up the internal biochemistry environment of the child
  • Clean up the diet and heal the gut
  • Boost the immune system
  • Targeted treatment of constipation, diarrhea, sleep, yeast, clostridia sleep, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, bacteria and parasitic issues

TIPS ON HOW TO START

  • Educate yourself on these dietary options through your own reading and research; this gives you foundational information to work with.
  • Get your child assessed by a trained Biomedical expert. Through extensive history, physical examination, and careful laboratory analysis, a comprehensive therapeutic plan will be created for your child.
  • Ease your way in. Starting the diet isn’t easy, but you can do it. If your child is young, don’t delay. Typically, younger children adapt more readily to dietary changes and it’s easier to control their access to food.
  • Read labels carefully when buying supplements, foods, snacks. You can make your own snack.

Biomedical intervention is so crucial in healing your child’s mind and body so she/he will have the clarity of mind to learn in school and also be receptive to behavioural and speech therapy. To achieve optimum benefits for your child is to embrace tested eclectic approaches to interventions that are holistic and suitable to the needs of your child.

As with all forms of intervention, early intervention is key to a higher success rate; start early!

Today is World Health Day

The theme for World Health Day 2016 is “Beat Diabetes” – this is a worthy goal given that Diabetes is estimated to affect over 400 million people worldwide (approximately 9% of the world’s population). The prevalence of Diabetes has been rising more rapidly in low and middle-income countries such as Nigeria, and if this trend continues, Diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death globally by 2030. A global response is important in curbing this trend, as Diabetes can often be prevented or delayed through key lifestyle changes.

United Nations

www.dietitians.org.ng

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic ailment that occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Without adequate insulin production or action, the body is unable to adequately regulate blood sugar levels, leading to Hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar). Hyperglycemia can cause serious and irreversible damage to body organs, nerves and blood vessels.

Types of Diabetes

There are two main types of Diabetes – Type 1 Diabetes usually has onset in childhood and requires daily administration of insulin because the body does not produce any or enough of it. Type 2 Diabetes usually has onset in adolescence or adulthood, and is more commonly a result of excess body weight and unhealthy lifestyle choices. In this type of Diabetes, the body is unable to effectively use the insulin it produces, thereby requiring lifestyle changes and/or medications to control blood sugar levels.

Gestational Diabetes can also occur if blood sugar levels are above normal during pregnancy, placing women and their infants at increased risk of complications during pregnancy, and increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes in the future.

Pre-Diabetes refers to the presence of blood sugar levels greater than normal, but not yet at the level of Diabetes. These elevated blood sugar levels need close monitoring and sometimes treatment to reverse the trend towards Diabetes.

world health day

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Diabetes

In order to diagnose Diabetes, your primary doctor will ask about certain signs and symptoms including increased thirst, increased appetite, increased urination, darkness of skin at the back of the neck, etc. They will also obtain a complete family history and inquire about the presence of other medical conditions such as Hypertension and Heart Disease. In addition, they will check your blood sugar level and inform you about which range it falls into: normal, Pre-diabetes or Diabetes.

Treatment of Diabetes

Management of Diabetes is dependent on the specific type of Diabetes diagnosed. In all cases though, diet and lifestyle changes can improve blood sugar levels and help control the disease – this includes avoiding foods and drinks high in sugar as well as avoiding excess carbohydrates and ensuring regular exercise and weight loss. Some individuals with well-controlled Diabetes are managed with only lifestyle changes and are not on medication. For those in need of medication however, there are a range of pills and different types of Insulin injections that are commonly prescribed.

There are many complications of uncontrolled Diabetes, as elevated blood sugar levels can cause damage to key organs and even lead to death. These are largely preventable by regular follow-up with a good primary care doctor, and sometimes a specialist called an Endocrinologist.

On April 7th 2016, make a pledge to eat healthier, exercise more and maintain a healthy weight – it will keep you feeling healthier, add longevity to your life and aid in the global effort to “BeatDiabetes!”

Recipe – ETIKENI MMONG IKONG

Our recipe this week is a recipe taken from DooneysKitchen, Dunni is a food enthusiast with the most amazing recipes, see the recipe for Etikeni Mmong Ikong

RecipesA delicacy nick named the Efik E.M.I is a cousin to Edikang Ikong a mixture of basically Water leaf and Uziza leaf, to create a soup that is basically is an aromatic flavour from the first bite to the last.

The Etikeni Mmong Ikong recipe can be used as a menu item for different kinds of occasions. It is easy to prepare, just follow the simple steps and you are on your way to enjoying the tantalising dish of Etikeni Mmong Ikong.

Ingredients

2 bunches of Uziza

4 Bunches of Water Leaf

Assorted Meats

Periwinkles

Palmoil

Stock Fish

Smoked Fish

Snails- Optional

Ponmo

Salt

Seasoning Cubes

Crayfish

3-5 Pieces of Yellow Pepper

Method

Season and boil your assorted meat, half way through add the tough smoked fish and/or smoked fish to the pot to allow it to soften. Let the meat boil till there is almost no water (beef stock) left in the pot. Once you have achieved this add roughly blended/ pounded yellow pepper and stir.

recipe

  1. When the meat from the stock has reduced significantly till it is almost dry, chop the two vegetables thinly and rinse. If you are using a very sharp knife, may we advise you to be very careful. Another thing is that the leaves start to turn to mulch very quickly after rinsing and will reduce into a pool of water in your soup. This is why the leaves are the last thing you chop before you start cooking so that the leaves are still intact before they get into the pot.
  2. With the leaves chopped add the palm oil to the pot. like Edikang Ikong their is no getting away with using a good amount of oil for this soup. Start with 2-3 cooking spoons.

Recipe

  1. Add the crayfish then periwinkle then stir. During  this time the liquid content of the pot should have further reduced. The picture below shows it. Their is no pool of water beneath the spoon

recipes

  1. Add the water leaves and stir until they wilt.

recipes

  1. When they wilt they should look like this

recipe

  1. Now add the uziza leaves, stir and give it too a few minutes to wilt and combine with the rest of the pot. their should be no liquid in this soup. It isn’t dry though, just very mushy and yum

recipes

  1. In about two minutes the aroma will hit you, and you will know that you are on to something. If you got your stock right from the early stages you shouldn’t need to re-season. This dish will be one of the highlights of your cooking this year

A Hairy Story

$
0
0

Like it or not, you are judged first on your physical appearance. You might not like it but that’s just the way it goes. Often times, the world is able to figure out our story by just taking one look at us.

My name is Wondrous Brown, owner of Wondrous Hair Salon. I have been a hairstylist for many years and my experience has taught me one thing – most of us make our hair decisions based on convention, especially as we age; why is that I hardly see hair choices based on real introspection?

www.nappiology.com

Take time to ask yourself this question: “What is really going on with me at this point in my life?” Dig deep inside your heart and soul to establish what you want to communicate to the world. Do this before you decide to grow out your hair, imitate someone else’s style from Instagram, or last but certainly not the least, join “team natural.” I have heard it said often that our hair is our “crowning glory” but you get to design your Crown of Glory. Who says your crown is supposed to be long or natural? Or a bob? I am Team Hair, Team Authentic, Team Do You.

That you wear hair extensions doesn’t make you less real any more than going natural makes you more authentic. One thing I have noticed over the years (the real issue) has to be the massive limits we place on ourselves as women regarding our hairstyles. Let me ask you this, why do you care what someone else thinks about your hairstyle – something that’s on your own head and not their head. How does that affect you? Don’t get me wrong; I am also guilty – very guilty.

I have a story to tell. I like short hair; I have always wanted to cut my hair. However, the time was never right – “I will get a hair cut when I lose weight.” This self-inflicted limit lingered for the longest because I feared I would look fat with short hair. Or the one time when I never went blonde because I felt it would make me look too pale. Then something happened within me – deep down within my soul.

Aside from the fact that I had been feeling quite uninspired for a while, it was also disturbing to discover I had been switching between only two hairstyles for 10 years – a bright red hair worn either as a curly fro or a straight fringe. How can a hairstylist be stuck in a rut? Not anymore. I woke up one morning, I went to my salon and I cut off my hair. And then I coloured it blonde. Did I freak out? You bet. I almost mixed the dye my regular red colour but I kept chanting blonde, blonde, blonde (in my head). And blonde I mixed.

Guess what? The best decision I have made in years! I have felt more powerful and more of myself than I have in years. My experience is not unique because I have seen the transformative power of the right hairstyle with my clients. I have also seen women who are slaves to their hair because they are trying to achieve certain type of ideal hairstyles – usually thick and long. I think that putting such pressure on yourself gives room for dissatisfaction in many ways you can’t even begin to imagine.

Black Hair

Sites like Pinterest is indulging me in the art of being spoilt for choices. It’s my go-to site for creating my authentic crown. Pinterest gives me the options of creating a picture board or saving the pictures of future hairstyles to my personal device. I don’t worry about whether or not a certain hairstyle will look good on me – and you shouldn’t too. It’s usually a process: start by browsing through a bunch of hairstyles, next step is to pair the hairstyles with digital outfits and accessories of your choice. What happens is, you will begin to discover and unravel your real style; one that is very different from what would typically purchase. On you next salon visit, make sure you go through your saved pictures with your hairstylist, this way you can start having conversations about hairstyles that suits you and your lifestyle.

Aren’t you thankful God didn’t make it such that we are stuck with one hairstyle? Dear Woman with a Crown, you should feel free to express who you are at any given moment. Work that hair of yours, and most importantly, be satisfied with it. God gave you your hair for a reason.
