How To Embrace Change and Pursue Your Destiny

$

The story of Ruth is one that shows what can happen at the cusp of change when a decision to unlock your destiny involves taking a bold step in line with God’s will. Ruth has the choice after she lost her husband to leave her mother in law, rather she chose to stay with Naomi, her mother in law and follow her and follow her God. In the end Ruth ends up as the grandmother of King David. (Ruth 1:6-16, Matthew 1:1-5) When destiny is calling you need to go beyond your place of disadvantage and familiarity to grab your destiny. Ruth didn’t want to go back to her past, she wanted to do something new and therefore decided to embrace her future.

Pursuing Destiny

God cannot impose success on you. You need to be able willing to move on, to take hold, the devil cannot impose failure on you either. Challenges and a need to change can be the trigger that is needed, Goliath was the door to David’s destiny.

There is no curse that should stop you form achieving your purpose. If you don’t know God’s purpose for your life no one can tell you. Arise from pain to embrace your destiny and learn to encourage yourself. Know that you are God’s transformer and generator to bring light to life and the world around you.

Is there something God wants you to do this season? Embrace your destiny and take the steps required to bring your destiny into reality. Familiarity reduces having to think and making the change needed and to go for something new.

Ordinary people want to stay safe and take only calculated steps. As a Christian you are not meant to be ordinary. You are not meant to be boring or lack creativity and ideas. We are God’s workmanship, we are created for good works in Christ Jesus. Christianity is an art of living, it’s a lifestyle of an overcomer.

God has many different roles in your life not always a teacher, God is not always a judge. Sometimes he wants to just hug you and enjoy you in an intimate relationship. Just as an eagle mum’s tips baby out of the nest and hovers to help them learn how to fly, Go encourages us to grow. God looks for people with the right attitude, attitude matters a lot to God. “But my servant Caleb has a different attitude than the others have” (Numbers 14:24).

eagle mum

It is people who are uncomfortable who create change, who start trends, Holy dissatisfaction comes from God. God doesn’t work in a straight line. Every step you take moves you towards your purpose. God needs our tenacity to pursue our purpose. You are bigger on the inside than all of the outside circumstances might make you feel.

You are a survivor not because there are not problems but because you are an overcomer. God looks for people who can change, who can forgive because they have been forgiven.

When change has come, figure out what your role in the change is and embrace it to pursue your destiny. Be bold this week! Have an awesome and amazing April.

The Importance of Proper Nutrition for Your Child

$

Childhood nutrition is highly important for the healthy development of a child. The sad thing is that a lot of kids are malnourished in today’s world and many of them actually go to bed hungry at night. At the same time there are children all around that are considered to be obese and their health is beginning to show the evidence.

Healthy Breakfast

As mentioned before, proper nutrition is very important for any person but this is especially true when it comes to childhood nutrition. This is due to the fact that the food that your child consumes today will have a direct impact on their growth and their health throughout their adolescent and adult years. This can either be a negative or a positive impact, depending on what the child is consuming.

If you want your child to grow up to be big and strong and also have excellent health you need to do your part as a parent and make sure that your child is getting all of the nutrients that they need. This task can be somewhat difficult at times but it is important that you remain determined and persistent

Nutrition Basics

It is very important that you are aware of how important proper nutrition is as a parent and that you are knowledgeable of how to properly give your child nutrients.

The following chapter will go over the importance of properly nitrating children. You will also be provided with a few tips and guidelines that you should consider following.

If you do not help your child by steering them towards healthier eating habits they will surely have negative effects on their health that you will notice later in life. Providing your child with well-balanced nutritional meals will help to prevent certain eating disorders and other issues such as anemia or obesity.

family nutrition

The following are some examples of why proper nutrition is so important:
Childhood Obesity Prevention

As mentioned before, it is extremely important to make sure that your child eats healthy food that is full of nutrients, especially in their earlier years. That is why it is so shocking that roughly twenty-five percent of children in the United States that are between the ages of two and eighteen years old meet the criteria to class them as being overweight. That is quite a bit of overweight children. It may be hard for you to believe but that fact comes straight from the CDC so start believing!

The scary thing is the fact that overweight and obese children have a much greater risk of developing health problems later on in their lives. They will be at risk for joint issues and pain. As well they will be at risk of getting serious problems such as cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes. Teaching your child at an early age to eat healthy and choose a piece of fruit over a candy bar will greatly reduce their risk of experiencing these problems.

Healthy Growth

Optimal nutrition is vital for a child to grow in a healthy manner. It is important to make sure that your child is consuming the proper amounts of nutrient dense food such as fruits and vegetables to support optimal growth. Calcium is also very important. This nutrient will ensure that your child grows up to have fully developed and strong bones. Calcium deficiencies can have some very undesired effects on your child’s health so you want to make sure that you are giving you child adequate amounts of calcium.

Nutritional Breakfast

It is very important that you make sure that your child has a nutritional breakfast every day, especially on days that they have school. Studies show that children who have a nutritional breakfast before class do much better and can focus and participate much more. An interesting fact is that children who do not have breakfast or have a unhealthy breakfast are much more likely to have behavioural issues and problems learning while in school. On the other hand, children who are well nourished are much more likely to have better memory and problem solving skills.

Consequences of Improper Nutrition

As mentioned before, proper nutrition is extremely important for a child, especially in their earlier years. If a child does not consume the proper nutrients they will surely face certain issues in the years to come of their life. For example, lack of proper nutrition as a child can lead to problems such as having a shorter or slumped over stature. Another issue that these children may face is a delay in them reaching puberty and this can have a serious impact on the rest of their life.

As well, children who are not receiving proper nutrition are at a risk of becoming dehydrated or facing certain health issues such as anemia. Their academic performance will likely be affected and this also can have lasting consequences on their life. Then there is always the fact that your child might become over-weight or obese. This can cause the child to experience serious health and social problems in life. It is extremely important that you as the parent make sure that your child is getting all of the nutrition that they need. Your child counts on you to keep them safe and making sure that your child is eating right is part of keeping them safe.

The best part is if you teach your child at an early age to eat healthy, they will likely continue to eat healthy, even when they are grown and have moved out. It may be a bit challenging at first to prepare healthy meals and get your child to eat it but it will get easier with practice and as you become more familiar with what healthy foods your child likes and what healthy foods they do not like.

5 Things To Know About Baby’s Throbbing Soft Spot On The Head

You are still basking in the excitement of being a new mummy, holding your precious baby in your arms and you notice the top of baby’s head, just at the crown, is beating. Yes, it seems like baby’s heart is also beating through his or her head and you can see it.

Baby throbbing soft spot

www.babycareforyou.com

Any new mother who has seen this happen to their child will agree it is one of the scariest things. I experienced this when my daughter was born. It is normal to be anxious, but do not be afraid. What you see as baby’s head beating, is called ‘The Soft Spot’. It is also called the ‘Fontanel’.

According to Columbia University Medical Center-Columbia Neurosurgeons “The fontanel, is one of several gaps between the bones of the skull that, in addition to allowing the skull to expand, are constantly producing new bone to keep up with this growth”. This gap or gaps makes provision for baby’s brain which is growing.

THINGS TO KNOW

1. There are two soft spots on baby’s head. The Anterior fontanel (in front) and the Posterior fontanel (at the back of the head). The posterior fontanel closes first, usually by the time baby is 4 months, it should stop pulsating. The anterior fontanel will close up by the time baby is 2 years old, at the latest. Note that each baby is different and these timelines are a guide.

2. The action of the soft spot can be described as ‘Pulsating’ or ‘Throbbing’. It moves with a rhythm similar to baby’s heartbeat.

3. You will not break baby’s head if you touch the soft spot. The soft spot is protected by a strong membrane. Remember, your hand will come in contact with your baby’s head several times during the course of the day, like, when washing baby’s head, adjusting baby’s head, etc. However, do not press the soft spot, to avoid injury.

4. The pulsating fontanel can tell you a number of things about baby. If it is indented/caved-in – sign of dehydration. If it is protruding/bulging – it may be a sign of head injury, fluid around the brain or infection. NOTE: when baby is crying or vomits, the fontanel may bulge out a little, so do not be alarmed. Make sure baby has enough water to drink during the day.

5. There are no magical solutions I know, that will make the soft spot disappear overnight. In Nigeria, traditionally prepared herbal solutions (like Agbo in the South west) or Palm Kernel Oil (Ude Aki in the South east) are often applied to the pulsating fontanel. Usage of these and other ointments is for your comfort as a mother and will not make it disappear. It is important to keep baby, free of infections, as their immune system is building up.

I hope this will help you worry less about your baby’s soft spot. Enjoy motherhood!

High-school senior Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna, a Nigerian girl living in New York has gained admission to all eight elite Ivy League schools — and then some. She chose twelve universities in her college application this spring and she aced it and got admitted to not some but all, including eight Ivy League Schools.

augusta-edit-2-1-640x431

You know those world top schools you really wish you could attend if you had the money and the brains?

The universities include Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

She has a deadline of May 1st to choose whose offer she’ll accept. Choices, choices, choices.

In a press release, the Nigerian Long -Islander said: “I am humbled by all of the college acceptance letters that I recently received. I am reminded that I have a responsibility to be a role model for others and use my experiences to encourage and inspire others, especially young women”.

The student of The Elmont Memorial High School rocked a 101.64 GPA transcript during her valedictorian as well as becoming a finalist in the 2016 Intel Science Talent Search. A daughter to Nigerian immigrants added more rubies to her crown after she recently got accepted to the White House Science Fair.

augusta

The grateful teenager gave all the credit to her school and teachers who “start their days at 7 a.m. and leave very late in the evening”.

She said: “My recent accomplishments reflect the hardworking ideals of the town of Elmont, my supportive parents, and my dedicated teachers. I am elated, but most importantly, I am thankful.”

Augusta also thanked her parents who have always taught her the value of hard work for all her accomplishments.

Last year, another Nigerian, Harold Ekeh, also a student of Elmont Memorial got accepted into 13 schools. He chose Yale.

“As a high schooler what really explains my recent accomplishment is finding something I am passionate about,” she said, “and not being afraid of stepping outside of my comfort zone.”

Go girl, we are proud of you!

Money Mindset

money

www.liveinspiredlifecoaching.com

What do you think of when you hear “rich woman”?

There’s really no need “beefing” that woman who just has so much money…or like we call them “money miss road” women. Believe me, it’s not worth it envying that other woman with tons of cash to spend away. You might have even said to yourself…she doesn’t even have time for her family, all she is concerned with is just making money”.

Money makes the world go round. We all secretly believe that it can make us happy. After all, wouldn’t it be great to have enough so you need not worry?

Yes, I can hear you say…well, who doesn’t? There’s plenty of things I can do with money than not having it. Enough to buy that dream car, house, and throw lavish over the top parties, dream vacation, luxury items you name it.

The concept of money comes with a lot of baggage to many, especially women. Many of us grew up with the Cinderella mindset that we don’t have to deal with money once we have our Prince charming. We have inherent belief that it (money) is good or bad or wanting it is good or bad. If you believe in your heart (even subconsciously) that money is a bad thing and having lots of it is really bad, chances are you will never have enough money and you will never become rich.

Money doesn’t discriminate, it doesn’t care whether you ‘re tall or short, pretty face, stupid, kind friendly or worst still it has nothing to do with your background(or your parents). The  only thing holding you back is yourself and your own money myths.

Do you tell yourself…”well, am never going to be able to afford that” when you see something you like?

Do you find yourself worried sick about not ever going to have enough money?

Do you complain every time you bring out a naira to pay for something?

Here’s what you can do:

Understand your money beliefs and where they come from. Your money myths are based on a lot of rubbish we picked up while growing up:

Money is the root of evil

Money is dirty

Rich people are greedy and stingy

You can’t be happy and be rich

Check the list and see which ones strike a chord with you. You have to add to the list from your own ingrained belief system.

Then ask yourself… What’s your motivation for acquiring more money? Why do I want to be Rich?

Understand your money beliefs and where they come from.
Click To Tweet

Here’s the truth:

“If your motivation for acquiring money comes from a non-supportive root such as fear, anger or the need to ‘prove’ yourself, your money will never bring you happiness”. T.Harv Eker

Oops, I bet you didn’t want to hear that.

You need to understand: There are several reasons why anyone would want to become rich. Some are stupid, others are sensible, whatever reasons you have, it’s based on your values and perception of life because we’re all different. What is your motivation?

Mobile West Africa Announces Best Speaker Line-up to date

Mobile West Africa 2016

Lagos-based event enters sixth year with Jumia, Uber, Huawei and Google confirmed as presenters

(Lagos, Nigeria) – 20th-21st April, 2016:

Mobile West Africa has confirmed that its 2016 conference, taking place in Lagos on 20th & 21st April, will feature its strongest ever speaker line-up. Representatives from Jumia, Huawei, Uber, Opera, iROKO Partners and Google are set to deliver presentations to confirmed delegates from companies including Konga, Wikimedia Foundation, Grant Thornton, Promasidor and Ringier Nigeria.

Now in its sixth year, the annual event has grown to become West Africa’s leading technology conference. Local and international industry executives have assembled in Lagos since 2011 to discuss the current state of mobile in the region, and to share strategies for growth. For 2016, a variety of speakers and panels will be presenting case studies and valuable insights falling under the general themes of ‘The Mobile Consumer’ and ‘The Business of Mobile’.

Conference Director Matthew Dawes commented, “The quality of this year’s speaker faculty is unprecedented. Along with keynotes and case studies delivered by key industry players, we’ve built panel sessions into the agenda featuring senior experts from Diageo, Supermart.ng, Etisalat, PZ Cussons and Hotels.ng.

The two people that I’m most looking forward to hearing from are Jumia Nigeria’s new CEO, Juliet Anammah, as it her first presentation since she took charge there; and Marek Zmyslowski, will also be presenting for the first time since he stepped down as CEO of Jovago. His ‘critique of life on the front line’ is going to be exceptionally interesting. In fact, that whole session is looking red hot, although I could point to any of the 8 sessions – they’re all focused, experience-based and progressive.

That is on top of industry leaders from Google, iROKO Partners, Criteo and Opera – the list goes on and on. With an amazing agenda and the best venue in the country, this year’s event is going to really deliver.”

Taking place at the Wheatbaker, Nigeria’s best hotel, Mobile West Africa will once again unite eCommerce leaders, app & software developers, media companies, publishers and brands together with handset manufacturers, mobile networks, VC firms, mobile money innovators, ad networks and digital agencies. The event continues to retain its unique and highly successful format of giving speakers 20-minute slots to encourage hyper-focused delivery of content in order to maximise value for delegates.

mobile west africa

The Mobile West Africa 2016 agenda and speaker faculty are available to view at the event website: http://mobilewestafrica.com.

After 5 groundbreaking events, the leading technology conference in the West African region is returning to Lagos on a mission to take the mobile industry to the next level. Mobile West Africa 2016 will take place April 20th & 21st at the Wheatbaker hotel in Ikoyi. MWA delivers 2 days of interactive and progressive presentations, discussions, and networking and this year’s edition will also feature the region’s first mobile awards – the West Africa Mobile Awards (WAMAS).

Speakers include experts from Google, Hotels.ng, Diageo, Uber, Huawei, Eskimi, Opera, PZ Cussons, Jumia, Etisalat, and iROKO Partners. The delegation that attends MWA is made up of industry leaders and all key stakeholder groups are represented.

Mobile West Africa has been described as “a must-attend for every industry trouper” (Fiyin Williams, Guinness Nigeria) and “the best conference in the region” (Riccardo Pasqualotto, The Mobi Hunter).

Letter to My Younger Self By Taiwo

Dear Taiwo,

I trust all is well with you and that this letter meets you in great faith.

I am in the future as a 35-year-old woman writing this letter to you, my past, to guide you on all the things you should have done differently and wishing someone could have told you earlier. I am not blaming anyone for not telling you, because now I realize times are different and they didn’t know themselves, so how could they have told you. They only told you what they knew and let’s be honest, if they told you differently, would you have listened?  Therefore, now that I have had a chance to live, learn and experience life, I will share with you, the things that you could have done and the areas that you should have focused on and did things differently.

black girl

What I, your future wants to say to you, my past, is that you didn’t start out on the right path, which is okay, because God has forgiven you for the mistakes that you have made and remember, it is not always how you start that counts. The important thing in life, is how you finish and that is what I, your future, is happiest about. With all that we have learned, the experiences that we went through, the choices that we have made and decision to focus on God and put him first in everything that we do, I can assure you that through Christ that strengths us, we will finish great.

The best caption is Like Paul said in 2nd Timothy 4:7-8.” I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.”

If I could rewind the hands of time, I share this wisdom with my renewed spiritual maturity lens concerning the following areas such as Faith, Time, Love, Money, Relationships, Career and Self-Esteem. These are very important so take note.

FAITH

As time has passed, I have come to the realisation that Mathew 6:33 was life changing. Today, we have a deep, intimate, and personal relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. By reading the word daily and spending time with the Holy spirit in fellowship, I know the truth and this truth has set you free.

Mathew 6:33. “Before all, Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

The promises of Jeremiah 29:11-14, has given me the renewed strength that all will be well and we will continue to seek God’s will for our life, explore every opportunity, fullfill every dream and most importantly, pray that when it is our time to leave this world, we will go Empty. By focusing on the journey instead of the destination, I know with God’s promises, all our dreams will only continue to manifest.  I can’t even begin to tell you all the amazing things God has done in our lives thus far, just by focusing on these two scriptures.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. 14 I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.” (Jeremiah 29:11-14)

Black woman

TIME

There is a set time and age for everything in your life. Do things in order of priorities. Do not be so quick to do everything at once or too early.  Put God first in your life and all of your other priorities will fall into place.

LOVE

Love is the greatest.

I will say that with love, you will and can endure anything. Love is the greatest and first commandment. It is hard at times, it is something that I will continue to work on and you find out that as you continue to grow in your spiritual walk, it gets easier easier too.

“Love never gives up, never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstances. (1 Corinthians 13 -7)

rules

MONEY

When it comes to money. I would say that you should save as much as you can, buy what you need and not what you want, be content and save for the rainy days. I am a work in progress.

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never you abandon you. (Hebrews 13:5)

RELATIONSHIPS

I have learned that, who you choose as a partner matters.  Be patient, pick wisely and pay attention to details. Speak your mind, stand up for yourself and understand that respect is key.

I have realised that if a man has the fear of God, it would be hard for him to hurt you. Therefore, I am thankful to God for my amazing husband who understands what it means to love unconditionally.

CAREER

Whatever you do. I would say do it well.  Be bold, follow your dreams, be passionate about your craft and be patient.

Success does not come overnight, so work hard, be content, don’t judge or compare others success with your own, thank God for everything, enjoy and learn the lessons along the way. If you miss the lesson, the destination will not be worth it.

making notes

SELF-ESTEEM

Love yourself and pray about your self-esteem. Be thankful that you are wonderfully and fearfully made by God Almighty.  Stop complaining and change what you can, ask for the strength to accept the things you cannot and the wisdom to know the difference.

In conclusion, Younger me. These are just a few things that I pray you hold onto, so that one day you can share them with your daughter or son.  We cannot rewind the hands of time and thank God for the lessons learned, which have made you into a beautiful, hardworking, faithful, God-seeking woman that you are today.  You know God and made a promise to live the rest of your life seeking him and you understand that the plans that he has for you are for good and to prosper you. Therefore, love everyone, trust a few and do harm to no one.

I am proud of you and I love you.

Yours truly,

Taiwo Oniru-Akintokun

10 Things to Know About Money Before You’re 20

Remember these rules and you’ll be ahead of the game.

A recent study by education tech company EverFi found that the average U.S. college student can answer only about a third of basic financial questions correctly. That’s a shame: America’s youngest millennials might not have full time jobs—or even pay their own cell phone bills—but it’s a mistake to assume that their financial knowledge or behavior doesn’t yet matter.

In fact, the late teens and college years are a crucial time to establish a good credit history and develop the smart habits that will help build wealth over the course of a lifetime.

Here are 10 truths about money that you should learn by age 20—and carry with you through adulthood.

  1. You can build credit history without racking up debt.

Credit card debt is a big problem for Americans, and young people are no exception. The average college senior graduates with more than $4,000 in credit card debt.

But that problem, worrisome as it is, obscures another: Students aren’t educated about the importance of building a credit history, and the way to do so responsibly.

A recent survey found that 60% of college students mistakenly think you can build credit by paying for stuff with checks or debit cards. In reality, the only way to build good credit is to use it, say by taking out a loan or opening a credit card. Opening a basic card in college—assuming you pay it off in full each month—can help you qualify for better cards with higher rewards (think cash back and airline miles) post-graduation. And being a responsible credit card holder positively affects your credit score, a number that helps determine how good a deal you’ll get if you take out a loan for a car or home later on in life.

A smart rule is to never spend more than 30% of your available credit each month, says Robert Harrow, an analyst at data research firm ValuePenguin. Even if you pay off your card on time, charging too much each month (what’s called “utilization”) will hurt your credit score.

Credit cards that are great for young people— with low interest rates and no annual fee—tend to have low ceilings on available credit, typically around $1,000. That means you’ll want to charge no more than $300 or so each month to your card

  1. There’s no substitute for a budget.

Studies have found that about 40% of college students budgets go to discretionary purchases like clothes, gadgets, entertainment, and snacks. And while those impulse purchases may seem cheap enough in the moment, they tend to add up fast. A coffee here, a concert ticket there, and you might find you’ve blown through your bank account halfway through your first semester.

Simply trying to resist temptation is an uphill battle: Retailers have turned the art of encouraging impulse buys into a science; stores are literally engineered to get you to buy more. Plus, not all unplanned purchases are frivolous: If you wait too long to look for used books and are stuck paying the full price at the campus bookstore, that counts against your savings, too. The only way you can protect your budget is to have one in the first place—and that means planning ahead.

One step in the right direction? Create an Excel or Google spreadsheet with rows for different types of expenses and columns with time periods. Plot out exactly how much money you will have available, as well as how you plan to spend it over the next few months. Or you can try an app like Mint to help you budget, set goals, and track spending.

If that sounds like too much of a drag, remember that you can budget in treats to reward yourself for being responsible. For example, for every $20 you save each month by skipping late-night snacks, you could set aside a $5 “bonus,” and then buy yourself an iPod Shuffle at the end of the year.

  1. Student loans don’t have to control your life.

Let’s be honest: Student loan debt is scary.

Studies show41% of millenials have students debt, which is forcing them to delay life events like marriage and buying a home at higher rates than previous generations.

That said, being educated about your options both before you take out loans and after you graduate can make a world of difference in terms of your freedom and future job choices. Simply put, borrowing for your education shouldn’t force you down a career or life path you don’t want.

Two key terms you need to know are “subsidized” versus “unsubsidized,” says Stephen Payne, a federal relations associate at National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. While unsubsidized loans accrue interest (i.e., money you will need to pay back later) during your time in college, subsidized loans are interest-free while you are a student—which means they will cost you less in the long run.

Likewise, when you are shopping for options, private loans should be only a last resort, Payne says. Private lenders don’t always guarantee the same perks that come with federal loans, such as the six-month repayment grace period after graduation.

Indeed, Payne points out, if you are lucky enough to be employed immediately after school ends, that grace period is a valuable opportunity for saving. Since your loan payments haven’t kicked in, you can get a head start on socking away cash so it’s less painful when the bills start coming along.

While this may all sound intimidating, there are several programs that make repaying loans even easier once you’ve graduated—particularly if you’ve gone into a field that doesn’t pay big bucks. For example, if you end up working at a school, in the military, or as another type of public servant, you may qualify for a federal loan forgiveness program that gives you a deep discount on your debt.

Similarly, a “Pay-As-You-Earn” plan allows lower-income workers to reduce their monthly payments to no more than 10% of discretionary income—though one downside is that you’ll end up paying your loans off more slowly (and accruing more interest) in the long run.

  1. Health leads to wealth.

You might already know exercise and a nutritious diet are good for your longevity (and looks), but what you might not realize is that healthy habits also translate into greater wealth.

For starters, unhealthy foods and beverages are hard on your wallet. If you’re among the 40% of college students who have binge-drunk alcohol in the past month, you might want to do the math: Cutting back on booze could potentially save you hundreds of dollars a year.

Learning to cook from home or in your dormitory kitchen can save you calories and cash, and it also makes it more likely you’ll continue making smart choices later on in adulthood.

Exercise is just as important a habit to establish early on. Research from Cleveland State University finds that people who work out at least three times a week earn 6% to 9% more than those who don’t, possibly because fit workers have lower stress and show higher efficiency.

Finally, seeing a doctor regularly and heading off health problems before they get more serious can reduce your future spending on medical costs.

  1. Identity theft hurts young people, too.

Being a teenager or early twenty something doesn’t mean you are immune to identity theft, a crime that involves a person stealing your personal information to open accounts, file taxes, or make fraudulent purchases.

“College students represent a tasty target for identity thieves,” says Adam Levin at Credit.com. That’s because they spend lots of time on unsecured college WiFi networks—and often unwittingly leave laptops, phones, and papers with personal identifying information within easy reach of strangers, says Levin.

To protect yourself from theft, a few basic measures will go a long way. For one, make sure your electronic devices are all locked with a password or fingerprint key: Remember that your email is likely full of identifying information. Likewise, try not to stay logged into sites or apps like Venmo or PayPal. It might be a pain to log in each time, but nowhere near as annoying as it would be to deal with fraud. And never leave papers with your Social Security Number lying around—in fact, avoid giving it out unless absolutely necessary.

  1. Social media mistakes live forever.

Before you post those boozy beach photos from spring or summer break, consider this sobering fact: More than 90% of recruiters say they check social media profiles of prospective hires. In addition to alcohol, hiring managers listed posts related to guns, sex, drugs, and profanity as top turn-offs that would make them reconsider a hire.

While it might seem unfair for prospective bosses to peer into what you see as your private life, it’s important to remember that the Internet is a public space. Employers view the way you carry yourself online as a litmus test for how good (or poor) your judgment is—and whether you’re apt to be dignified (or embarrassing) as an employee.

Here’s the part that really matters: Social media blunders committed online sometimes take on a life of their own. These 10 young people not only lost jobs but also in several cases became Internet-famous for their cringeworthy choices involving social media posts. Their mistakes are a lesson in how a seemingly minor misjudgment can follow you around years after the original error.

  1. Interest matters less than how much you save.

Whether you are stashing cash for your emergency fund, putting away for retirement, or saving up for a summer road trip, there are two main factors that will determine how quickly you can hit your goal: the amount you save and the interest you earn.

While interest rates are certainly important—and over the long term can make the difference between a comfortable and difficult retirement—no amount of interest or investment returns can make up for not putting away enough money in the first place.

For a demonstration of this principle, it helps to use a compound interest calculator: Assume you save $100 a month in a savings account paying 1% interest; after four years you’d have $5,000 dollars saved up.

Now let’s say that instead of a savings account, you invested the same amount money in the stock market, which averages about 7% in returns each year. In that scenario, you would instead end up with more than $5,600, which certainly seems better.

Yet there are dangers to investing in the stock market, especially over short-term periods and outside of tax-sheltered retirement accounts. In a plain old brokerage account you might end up paying fees or taxes that offset the extra money you earned from higher returns. Most important, unlike in a savings account, the money you invest in stocks is not protected, which means in a down market you can end up losing some—or all—of it.

So let’s assume you stick with a plain savings account, but instead of $100 a month you throw in a little extra cash and save $120. Even given the low interest rate of 1%, you end up with $6,000 after four years—even higher than the savings in the theoretical brokerage account. That shows how powerful an effect a small uptick in your savings rate can have on your final account balance.

And how much should you be socking away exactly?

Working young adults ought to save 15% of income, according to CNN’s Christine Romans, author of Smart is the New Rich.

Young people should start by paying off student loans and other debt, says Romans, then save for six months of living expenses to cover a job loss or emergency, and begin contributing to a retirement account.

  1. Bank fees can sneak up on you.

While opening an interest-earning savings or checking account is a great way for young people to start saving money, it’s crucial that you choose a bank with terms that fit your lifestyle and behavior—and won’t end up costing you hundreds of dollars in unexpected fees.

For example, several online checking accounts charge no out-of-network ATM fees and in fact reimburse all fees charged by third parties. But if you use a big traditional bank, you’ll likely end up paying about $4 in fees every time you use an out-of-network ATM.

Let’s say you’re like most customers and take out cash about once a week, and 30% of the time it’s at an out-of-network ATM. That means you’re likely spending about $60 a year that you wouldn’t have to pay if you switched to a bank with better terms.

Likewise, if your account balance is constantly hovering around zero, it’s really important that you understand your bank’s overdraft protection policy—and opt out if you can.

  1. Technology can help reinforce good habits.

There’s a great deal of smart research by behavioral economists showing how automation is extremely effective in getting people to save more in their retirement accounts. Essentially, when people can “set it and forget it”— choosing a future savings rate on future salary increases—they are unlikely to miss or even notice the money being automatically saved.

Even if you’re years away from opening a 401(k), the lessons of these studies can still help you as you try to manage a budget and save more. A simple way to DIY your own automated savings program is to split any allowance or paychecks you receive into two accounts. You could, for example, elect to have 10% of any direct deposit go to a separate savings account you never touch.

New web and mobile phone apps make this type of saving even easier—and a little more fun. Acorn is one such app, which connects to your bank account and rounds up all of your purchases to the nearest dollar, investing the leftover change in index funds. Another app, called Digit, analyzes your account activity on a week-to-week basis and deducts small amounts of money here and there whenever the program’s algorithm determines you won’t miss it.

If this sounds too complicated, there are still some good old analog ways to push yourself to save more. One study found that visual reminders can help; consider simply leaving photos of that dream vacation spot or car you want to buy next to the computer where you do online banking to remind you to put more away.

  1. Financial independence takes practice.

If you don’t feel ready to strike out on your own just yet, you’re not alone. A recent Bank of America study found that 85% of millennials have gotten at least some financial help from their parents  (compared with only 66% of parents who said they got help from their parents).

But needing some support doesn’t mean you can’t start taking steps toward independence.

As MONEY reporter Katy Osborn suggests, getting ready for financial life in the real world takes practice, and part of that involves reimagining your identity as someone more self-reliant—and lower-maintenance. For example, instead of thinking of yourself as a “shopper” or “restaurant explorer,” says Osborn, try to see yourself as a “saver” or “home cook.” Even if you’re not picking up the tab for all of your food, housing, and other necessities, you can still begin drawing up a mock budget that calculates what your money needs would be if you were on your own.

Finally, remember that there’s no shame in getting help from or even living with your parents, particularly if it allows you to save more or keeps you out of debt—as long as you try to contribute as best you can. That could mean pitching in on chores and covering expenses that might be within your budget, like groceries or family cell phone bills. It also means making a plan for how you will leave the nest: As much as you may enjoy your parent’s’ company, you probably don’t want to rely on them forever.

5 Damaging Things a Parent Can Say Which Lingers

Parenthood is a massive responsibility. Unknowingly a parent can be found guilty of saying damaging things which have lingering effects. Forget the basics of just keeping a tiny human alive, you are also obligated to instil confidence and self-worth in them and make sure they grow up to be sensible, balanced and well-adjusted adults.

psychological damage

www.dailymail.co.uk

But when you’re weighed down with shopping bags in the rain, trying to get back into the house and your beloved child is throwing a tantrum, lets be honest it is hard to keep your cool.

In such moments, out of frustration and irritation many parents resort to flippant comments which can have a lasting impact. Following a line of questioning on Quora, parents have been discussing the most psychologically damaging comments you can say to a child, based on their own experiences.

While some are genuinely disturbing, others are probably throwaway comments one might say without even thinking, but yet they make an impact. See below some comments that people shared had varying lasting effect on them up until adulthood.

You’ll understand one day

Stephanie Unson listed some of the phrases she heard growing up, including “stop being so sensitive” and “you’ll understand when you have kids one day”. She also says that whenever she asked for help, her mum would reply: “NOW what did you do?”

Other comments Stephanie warns against are “What’s wrong with you?” and “Don’t be a burden” – which, she claims, was said to her before she was sent off on school activities or “any situation involving other people.”

Mother scolding child

It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it

Luke Meier, a single father-of-three, argues that any words which “completely demean his or her efforts and talents” are high on the list of what you shouldn’t say to children – “especially if uttered while the child is trying to impress you or receive praise.” He gives the example that if your child is learning violin and you constantly tell her to “shut that thing off ” so you can watch TV, they will “never forget that.”

Luke adds that “the most psychologically damaging thing you can say to a child is a lie that they find out later was not true. If this pattern repeats enough times, it will be very psychologically damaging.”

David Hunter insists that it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. He wrote: “Children are very sensitive to inflection and mood in parental delivery. Probably more so than they are sensitive to content.”

According to Karl Ngantcha, saying nothing at all is still more psychologically damaging to a child. He adds: “By nothing I mean not talking, communicating or interacting with your child at all. At as young as few months, children depend on daily interaction with their mother or father.”

praise your kids

Never belittle their suffering

Parent Miranda Marcus suggests that you should never make fun of your child or belittle their pain or suffering – however trivial you think it might be.

Bringing up their personal failures in front of relatives is not advisable as it embarrasses the child. [Read: 5 things parents shouldn’t let children do]

Do not be over-controlling

Others warn not to be “over-controlling”, such as forcing the child to eat something they don’t like, and not to compare them directly with siblings or other children.

Using unloving language

Other users pointed out phrases that are more obviously damaging to a child . Ellen Perkins wrote: “Without doubt, the number one most psychologically damaging thing you can say to a child is ‘I don’t love you’ or ‘you were a mistake’.

She concludes: “But even more importantly, whatever words are used or implied through a parent’s behaviour, it is the feeling of being unloved that does the damage.”

remember that the way you interact with your child will have lasting effect make them positive…

As a parent while you go thorough your emotions and real life issues on a daily basis, cast your mind back to things that were said to you as a child which still have lingering effects on you today. So remember that the way you interact with your child will have lasting effect – make them positive moments. Whenever the pressure of the daily grind gets overwhelming you can give yourself a time out or a break to get your emotions under check so your child does not suffer your outbursts.

Why You Should Tell Your Children They Are Beautiful – A to Z Parenting Tips

$
0
0

Everyone thinks their child is beautiful.

However, there’s a school of thought that it’s wrong to tell your children they are beautiful. That if you tell a girl she is pretty, you’re conditioning her to believe that this is her most valuable asset. That we should focus on the internal and not the external, to teach our girls that their minds, and not their faces, count. Is it as simple as that?

Inside and out

The reality is that good looks are pleasant to look at – after all, that’s why they’re called ‘good’.

On the other hand, a child’s appearance is far from their most significant quality. What is far more important is what is inside a child – their mind, heart, and soul.

So in terms of praising a child’s appearance, there should be a delicate balance. It’s okay to acknowledge your daughter’s beauty and son’s handsome-ness on occasion. You can comment on a particularly great photo, or when they look nice in an outfit. But for the most part, you should focus on the really important things. Kindness, intelligence, compassion, humor, hard work, good attitude and more.

AtoZ Beauty

Physical confidence

You should tell all your children what wonderful people they are, this builds their confidence. You should tell them daily, in detail, focusing on specifics. It’s important they have the right priorities in life and to recognize and appreciate what makes a person special, beyond the superficiality of appearance. When children build their sense of confidence from home, it is harder for them to be swayed by external influences.

Confidence is helpful to self-esteem. Tell your daughters they are pretty and tell your son he is handsome. They all are, but then again, all children are.

Every child is beautiful. And it’s okay to know it. It’s okay to comment.
Click To Tweet

But it’s simply one measure of a human being, and not even close to being the most important. A person is truly beautiful when it starts from the inside, with a good attitude.

Parents who bring their children for play at PoPP Lagos may say one or more of the following:

  • I want my child’s brain to be stimulated, not just sitting at home playing with nanny or watching TV all day.
  • I want my child to socialize with other children his/her age, during the week. To start learning to practice sharing, empathy and to know there are other kids in the world.
  • I want my child to start swimming lessons as a baby, she loves water and I don’t want to wait till she gets scared of a pool.
  • I want to come to play with my baby and have a bit of bonding one-one-one time with him. Something different from our usual daily routine, once/twice a week.
  • My baby loves music so I know she will enjoy the music class for babies.

Who we are:

We are the first & only structured play Centre for babies & toddlers in Lagos.

We are the first & only structured play Centre for babies & toddlers in Lagos.

We say we are the first because we are not a school or crèche.

We offer play activities for children 0 -2.5 years as a ‘stay and play’ option, which means Mum, Dad and in some cases Carer/Nanny come along and stay with your child at PoPP.

This means there is interaction between your child and the care-giver who attends with them. It also means one-on-one care for every child who attends PoPP.

Who are the founders:

We are two mums who are passionate about play for children.

We know the subtle differences between ‘play’ and ‘productive play’ and based on that, we have designed a great programme of play for children in Lagos, at the same standard as you would find at a kids play centre abroad.

Sensory experiences, plenty of music, child-led play – are key. We also operate a no-TV zone, so truly play is the priority at PoPP.

What we do:

We offer children from new-born to two and a half years old fun & interactive activities (we call them play sessions). This includes baby swimming, music, baby gym, art, problem solving & more.

The classes are split into age groups, so we can focus on the developmental stages the children are at. For example, building language skills, practicing crawling etc.

The classes last about an hour. After the play session (or before) children can stay and play with our learning toys or play in our specially designed ‘soft play’ room, which also has a slide, full ball pool, climbing dome and more.

We also have a generous outdoor space for play, a small pool for swimming classes and food can be bought at the café, too.

Why we do what we do:

1000 days! The first 1000 days of your child’s life, from time in the womb to their 2nd birthday, are the most important for their development, research has shown*. Language, Problem-Solving, Building confidence, Physical Development and Personality develop at a very high rate!

PoPP helps you shape those first few years that are important for brain development, by giving you a fun and exciting opportunities for learning (through play).

Play is important because it’s the way children learn and figure out how to interact with the world and other people in it. But not just any kind of play – productive play is what we provide, by picking out the best toys, learning resources and activities that are enjoyable for your children.

child painting

Why PoPP is perfect for your young children:

– We provide a place where your child can come to play & socialise with children their own age, and get them to practice sharing, team playing in a very gentle and unpressurised manner.

– We give children, parents and carers new ideas of games, songs with actions and ways to play for when you return home.

–  We work on specific areas based on your child’s current developmental ability and the milestones they are working towards – for example, sitting up, crawling, walking, talking etc

– We offer plenty of fun & learning toys, different to those seen at home, providing variety and an enjoyable play experience, every time.

– Mums can meet and socialise with other Mums from different backgrounds, countries and cultures, and gain a new network of mums with children of similar ages

Next steps:

Come and join in a play session to see your child’s face of pure joy!

Our opening hours are Monday 9am – 4pm (with a lunch break in the afternoon),  Tuesday & Wednesday 9am – 1:30pm and Thursday 9am – 12:30pm.

Their Love Don’t Cost A Thing

$

Good day everyone and it is indeed an awesome privilege to be on this platform to share with you as well as learn from you on issues that border on parenting particularly parenting in the 21st century. I will be talking to you based majorly on my personal experiences and that of others and I assure you, every minute spent here will indeed be worth your time as it has always been here on Lagos Mums.

So to kick off this interesting series (now I think I’m beginning to sound like a radio presenter, lol) I want to start by saying that in showing love to our children we need not break the bank simply because,

“Their love don’t cost a thing”.

www.multiplemayhemmamma.com

Apologies to Jennifer Lopez who sang ‘My love don’t cost a thing’.  This line from her song was one I used to like singing out loud when the song first hit the airwaves. It was almost like I was begging to be loved. Lol.

I can’t help remembering it today as I observe my children and see how  pleased and over the moon they are when I do the simplest of things for them making me conclude that children’s perception of love is clearly different from that of adults. Now we as parents sometimes think to get these children to be happy particularly when we have been too busy to pay them the well deserved attention, we need to shower them with the most extravagant gifts.

Meanwhile for these children, saying you love them is more in the simplest ways than the grand ones. It may be a listening ear, a warm  cuddly bear hug, a kiss on the forehead, been present at their school events (I could preach a whole sermon on this), a compliment or word of commendation or even something as cheap as N100 ice cream.

Let me tell you about this N100 ice cream bit. So one Sunday afternoon after a very wonderful service in church that blessed me so much, I literally emptied my purse for the Lord leaving me with only N500. I didn’t think much of it as I had no intention of buying anything on my way home or so I thought. As we made the journey back home, one of my daughters suddenly reminded me about the new KFC outlet in the neighbourhood I had promised to take them for the umpteenth time.

The crestfallen looks on their faces and my anticipated negative response made me have a rethink about offering anything by way of an explanation that it could not happen that day. Did I mention that on this fateful day I left my debit card at home? Even if I had it with me, every kobo in the account had already been budgeted.

Another thing that didn’t work in my favour that day was the fact that I had not taken the children out in a while due to no deliberate fault of mine as weekdays were hectic with work and weekends were for, you guessed right, house chores. Granny’s place happened to be the only place of recreation they seemed to know during this time so I quite understood their ‘plight’ when they led the ‘protest march’ this afternoon.

With N500 in my purse, I suddenly had a light bulb moment where I remembered KFC sold ice cream in cones for N100. The teacher in me immediately came to life and I made quite a big deal out of this ice cream.  Off we went to KFC and thirty minutes later, I had three boisterous girls with ice cream mustaches and colorful balloons in hands completely satisfied that mummy had finally fulfilled her promise. Did I take them to KFC or not? Yes. Were they happy or not? You bet they were. Did they know how much I spent? No. How much did it cost? N300 only with free balloons. Lol. Cheap you may say yet the joy experienced is unquantifiable.

What I Learnt

I learnt the following lessons that day and I hope you find it useful too.

  • Children never forget a promise made so if you will not fulfill it, don’t promise.
  • Sometimes with children, under promise and over deliver.
  • When you have a shoe string budget, be as creative with children as much as possible as they are easily amused. Remember the ice cream mustache from the N100 ice cream?
  • Always have a budget for family entertainment no matter how small. Not like I didn’t know this before but sometimes, (did I say some?), most times I mean, alot of things beg for our finances but needs must come first. One thing that will help you majorly here is to make it a regular habit of buying them little treats. Not like it should be an everyday affair but trust me it puts you in good standing with the children on the days you cannot afford the big, fanciful treats.

So remember this the next time your child says to you, “Daddy buy me Gala when you are coming back home”.

The key thing is not to go overboard as we wouldn’t also want a child who gets too used to having all he asks for. Life never gives all what we demand from it.

In conclusion, making these children feel loved actually does not cost much. It’s more in the seemingly little things like the ones highlighted earlier. It’s more in the experience than in the things, joy, the thrill and total sense of belonging. No matter what you do, truth is, their love doesn’t cost a thing.

Being a mother can be fun and challenging at the same time especially if the mother is working. Although having a child takes most of your time, you also need some time for yourself. Knowing that you don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to yourself, here are some tips on how to take a few moments to start the day with healthy habits especially concerning your skin before running to work and starting with tone of obligations.

In the morning

One of the most important things when you get up is to wash your face. If your skin is dry, try not to wash it with soap, the best way is to use a moisturizer before applying your makeup. Your skin will be clean, moisturized, fresh and hydrated. If you have some more time, once or twice a week (maybe on weekends) you can do some exfoliation to remove the dead skin cells. Wet your skin with some warm water with a soft cloth, squeeze a small amount of cleanser on the cloth and rub it on your face in circular motions. After you finish apply a moisturizing cream and your skin will look amazing.

Your face

www.theguardian.com

You should start with areas of your skin that need to be covered the most and apply the foundation with your fingers. If you want to preserve your T-Zone use a bit of light luminous powder. Concealer is great in helping you to disguise dark circles and blemishes. Apply a bit of cream blusher to the apples of your cheeks. You can also use bronzer to brighten up your face and apply it to your cheekbones, temples and on the bridge of your nose. When using a cream blush, always chose the color which is the most similar to your skin tone and it only takes less than a minute.

Eyes

Take a metal eyelash curler, it is a great and fast tool and you don’t even have to put on mascara afterwards. However, if you want your eyes to be noticed and smoky after applying the concealer and powder you can choose the one color of eyeshadow and sweep it across your lids and lower lashes. Black eyeliner is great for emphasizing eyes and you can apply it on top lids. Blend it with eyeshadow from the outer corners of lids to the inner corners.

Lips

The best and easiest way to apply a bit of lipstick is with your fingers. The color of your lips won’t pop up that much and the color will look much more neutral especially if you use a peach or pink tone of lipstick. Or use a bit of lip gloss for a shine or touch of a lip stain for longer lasting color. Use lip balms without fragrances and flavors because they can cause irritation, so the best way to go is to use all-natural lip balm with no chemicals.

At night

When you put your baby to sleep and when you finally have some time for yourself, before you go to bed and turn on TV you can make a face mask on your own. Your skin will get healthy glow and it will look younger.

Natural cosmetics

If  you want the best treatment for yourself, without having so much free time to take care of your body, always opt for for natural cosmetics. It is perfect for all skin types, much safer and more effective and there are no side effects or chemicals and of course it is nutrient rich.  By choosing brands such as Paula’s Choice, One Love organics, Ultraceuticals or 100% pure you can never make a mistake.

Being a busy mom who is always short with time doesn’t mean you should disregard yourself, because there are always ways to get some time for your beauty routine. With just couple of strokes, few swipes and a quick finger application you will get the result! Just don’t forget to go for natural and healthy choice. Done this, grab a healthy smoothie, fasten your seatbelt and take off to a brand new day.

Child Nutrition Part 2: What Nutrients Are Children Commonly Missing?

Nutrients

www.autoimmunedisorderinfo.com

There are certain nutrients and different types of vitamins that are very important for a child when it comes to their development. This is actually true for the health of all people and not just that of children’s. The truth is however, a lot of people are not aware of how important these nutrients are or exactly what types of nutrients they should be looking for in their food when making meals for their children. Most children who are lacking in nutrients are usually lacking from the same minerals and vitamins and other forms of nutrients. The lack of these nutrients may not present any immediate noticeable effects on the child’s health, but eventually it will take its toll.

The following chapter will go over what nutrients kids are commonly missing and will also provide you with some examples of ways in which you can incorporate these nutrients into your child’s diet.

Commonly Overlooked Nutrients

Many people, especially doctors and other in the medical field, would agree that far too many children are consuming too many calories and not enough healthy foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. This is exactly what is contributing to the problem of childhood obesity in the Unites States. It is highly important that you begin teaching your child from a young age to eat healthy and to consume all of the nutrients they need in order to maintain good health and be strong.

There are some forms of nutrients that are more common to be missing from a child’s diet than others. The following are some examples of these

  • Calcium.

Many children do not have enough calcium in their diet. The problem with this is the fact that calcium contributed to children developing strong bones. New research also suggests that there are many other benefits from calcium that were previously unknown. For example, it is now believed that calcium can prevent breast cancer as well as other forms of cancer. As well, calcium is not believed to help protect

your heart and arteries. With as high of a rate of heart issues and breast cancer as there is we should be doing everything that we can as a parent to help ensure that our children will not have to go through health issues such as these later in life. One way that you can get your child to start consuming more calcium would be to have them eat a bowl of fortified cereal with breakfast. Do not use whole milk for the cereal. Also, you may want to consider sending them to school with yogurt for a snack. [Read: Importance of proper nutrition]

  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D is another form of nutrient that is extremely important forthe growth of healthy and strong bones. Vitamin D is absorbed through the skin and it provided by sunlight. The thing is that kids seem to be spending less and less time playing outside and more and more time sitting on the couch watching TV. Limit the amount of time that your child can play video games or watch TV each day and this will surely contribute to them getting out in the sun much more often. There are other ways you can get vitamin D other than the sun. A few examples would be rockfish, tuna, or vitamin D fortified milk.

  • Potassium

Potassium is a very important part of anyone’s diet, but this is especially true when it comes to the diet of a child. It is a little known fact but a lack of potassium in a diet can result in high blood pressure and other undesired medical issues. You need to make sure that your child is consuming enough potassium because it is extremely important. Potassium can be found in many different types of food. A few examples would include beans, spinach, potatoes and tomatoes. Tasty fruits such as bananas also contain high amounts of potassium.

  • Fiber

Many people are not aware of just how important fiber is in their child’s diet. Consuming the proper amounts of fiber on a daily basis is a great way of preventing certain issues such as heart disease and type II diabetes. Fiber is an indigestible part of plants that we eat in our food. It helps digestion and other parts of your health. You can give your child a lot of fruit or vegetables to help them get the right amount of fiber or you can try feeding them nuts or cooked dry beans.

  • Vitamin A

Making sure that your child gets enough vitamin A is very important for many different reasons, however many children are still lacking when it comes to the intake of this vitamin. The problem with this is the fact that vitamin A contributes to healthy eyesight. Vitamin A also contributes to a healthy immune system and is also involved with tissue growth. I am sure that you do not want your child to have to wear coke bottle thick lenses on their glasses by the time they are in their teens so make sure they are getting enough vitamin A. You can get your child to consume more vitamin A by feeding them food such as sweet potatoes, romaine lettuce, as well as dark and bright colored vegetables.

Together We Can End Malaria For Good

2016 WORLD MALARIA DAY

world malaria day

World Malaria Day, falling on 25 April each year, is designed to highlight the gravity of the malaria situation. The theme for this year is, “End Malaria for Good”. Malaria has plagued humankind since ancient times and is still a significant threat to half of the world’s population – recent statistics from World Health Organisation (WHO) has shown that there were about 214 million cases of malaria in 2015 and an estimated 438,000 deaths.

Malaria death rates have fallen by more than 60% globally since 2000, and by 66% in the WHO African Region. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa where a child dies every minute from malaria. Together, DR Congo and Nigeria accounted for over 35% of the estimated global total of malaria deaths.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of the infected female Anopheles mosquito. The mosquito transfers the malaria parasite, Plasmodium, from person to person. The mosquito bites at night, primarily between 11pm and 5am. Pregnant women, children under 5 years, people with HIV/AIDS, international travellers and immigrants are particularly at high risk of complications from malaria.

Symptoms of Malaria

Symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, chills, sweating, vomiting, muscle pains and tiredness; these symptoms usually appear between 10 and 15 days after the mosquito bite. If not treated, malaria can quickly become life-threatening by disrupting the blood supply to vital organs.

Early diagnosis and treatment of malaria reduces disease and prevents death.  In many parts of the world, the parasites have developed resistance to a number of malaria medicines. The best available treatment for malaria is Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) and there are several accredited combinations (ask your doctor or pharmacist for an ACT based therapy).

Preventing Malaria

Malaria transmission can be reduced and prevented by the following measures:

  • Use of a Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Net
  • Eliminate places around the home where mosquitoes breed (e.g. shallow water collections)
  • Spray insecticides in the home
  • Wear insect repellent and long sleeved clothing if outdoors at night
  • Use appropriate and correct dosage of anti-malarial drugs for prevention
  • Participate in environmental sanitation and community health education

Malaria is preventable and curable, early diagnosis and treatment is very important. If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, please consult your doctor.

In Nigeria, the battle against Malaria has been a long one, but from all indications, this is a fight we can win. In recent times, the number of deaths occurring from malaria has been on the decline. However, we can do more to end malaria for good.

In 2014, it is estimated that in sub-Saharan Africa, 450 million of the 840 million people at risk of malaria live in households with no access to a single Insecticide Treated Net; 15 million of the 28 million pregnant women did not receive a single dose of Intermittent Preventive Treatment; between 100 and 140 million children with malaria did not receive an ACT for treatment.

A lot can still be done to win the war against malaria. Let’s get involved.
